My mate was a drummer back in the 70's and 80's and he was in a band that played at these kind of social clubs all over the north west of England. They were very good and were booked every weekend somewhere in the region. I often used to go with him and they were always great nights with plenty of cheap drinks and full of friendly people. Alan still plays drums in a band now and even though I admit a small bias I have always thought of him as one of the best rock drummers ever.
    Great times I'll never forget

When I got married in 1997, my mother and father (although divorced at the time), both came along to the whole shebang. One of our invited guests was an old flame of my fathers (before he married me mum). None of us knew that she was, as she was a friend of my soon-to-be wifes family. My dad was a rocker (proper biker, born in 1938) and his old flame used to be his moll (back seat/pillion hang-around). Anyhow - at my wedding, we had the compulsory Rock n' Roll belting out, and I always heard about my father being a good mover on the dancefloor - but never saw it until that day. What has this got to do with this video?
Well, these 2 people here on stage at the Wheeltappers and Shunters, dancing like their lives depended on it, are an instant flash-back to my dad and his ex girlfriend that night on our reception floor. It was amazing to watch my Father dance like this, and both were having the time of their lives. Ok, they both had to sit down for a breather half way through!
bike club back in the day. So add to that, the fact he was there in 1997 with his old moll AND my mum watching was a rather bizarre feeling. It's like I stepped back in time. A bit like Marty in ''Back to the Future''.
I was brought up watching the Wheetappers, along with the other show, ''The Comedians''. Tonight is a crazy night for all-sorts of returning memories and this video has just brought back another!

When we first played there it was called The Hard Rock Cafe, and run by a man called Jasper, but because it was nothing to do with the USA company they had to change their name, hence Daddy's Dance Hall.

I think only a certain generation will find this entertaining, and I am that generation. RIP Bernard, entertainment died with the likes of you. Regretfully the PC brigade killed laughter and fun in this country. But it never gets better, the Blairs and Brussels have done for this country. RIP humour.

A top band like this would have cost at least a 50p cover charge to get in to see them back in the day and there would have been quite a few grumbles from some of the older club members that they had to pay that to get in to see the turn.

John Sunter Hi bud, a friend posted this on FB and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and the memories flooding back. Back then I was the bass player in the Leeds band Namesake, still playing with Steve (guitarist) and Brad (drummer) in a band called Jukebox Jive. Hope you're still gigging buddy.

Hi, just seen this post. Yes I am still gigging with 2 bands locally in the Huddersfield area. Although it is getting harder to carry my equipment about as I am now in my 70's. But as long as I can still do it, I will do it.

My neighbour used to be a cameraman for Granada TV in the late 60's / early 70's, and I remember him saying that this wasn't an actual Working mens' club but a studio in what is now the old Granada tv studios in Quay St. Manchester. People would write in to Granada asking for the clubs' location and how they could get tickets. The people around the stage sitting at the tables are just the studio audience.

    • @JohnSunter
      @JohnSunter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That is right, it was a mock up of a WMC in a massive studio. There was also an unseen audience who were seated in tiers out of camera shot. They didn't get to drink the beer.

To be fair, their dance rhythm is the equivalent of a five minute sprint.
I once saw a 30 something guy doing something similar during a talent contest. He advertised himself on the front of the black T-shirt he was wearing as a 'Professional Dancer' and that he was for hire and the t-shirt also included his contact number.
The rules of the contest was usually that the singer/performer would sing three songs or a comedian or non-musical act would get about 10-12 minutes.
The dancing guy was therefore allowed to dance to three-songs and the three he chose were:-
      01. Making Your Mind Up - Bucks Fizz
      02. YMCA - The Village People
      03. Dance Yourself Dizzy - Liquid Gold
Three highly-energetic songs. So, this guy started off quite confident in his stride and his prancing and his pirouettes, but soon the pace of the music was having an obvious effect until only half-way through the first song, it was noticeable that he was slowing down.
By the start of the second-track he was beginning to look at bit knackered and his expression looked anything but happy.
By the middle-end of that second song he has slowed right down to a walking-pace...
Still one more song to go but he gave up just at the point that the intro started to that song and he never returned to see how he fared. He clearly hadn't given a great deal of thought to which songs to choose, and to be honest, if people want to go somewhere and watch other people dancing they can visit their local discotech.
