3 days solo steering is very hard to impossible . After 36 hours of stress anyone loses the ability to make good decisions. Lessons others can learn from this is to have backup gear and a plan. I carry my InReach and small chart plotter, both have build-in batteries and function for a while without onboard power. With that I have hopefully a chance to find a spot to anchor in the first 24h while I still can think and get help via satellite messages. I just hope I never need to test my plan….
Totally agree. Very difficult to be in a clear mind after so long solo steering. Horrible experience. I would try to have a rest somehow too. I and my wife had to steer 1560 nM in Indian with broken autopilot. we were looking like a fish bones. So hard experience...
It's very sad
Yep, Sad Story

An option for any sailor who is single handed and without an autopilot is to heave to for 4 hours or so.
