wonderful explanation of how to cast with a conventional reel. I grew up with them here is California in the 60s & 70s for surf fishing . To me they are so much better when bait fishing. They can be a chore if slinging hardware but you can actually do it though for that I do prefer spinning reels. For me it is more about the timing when using artificial rather than difficulty, hmmm, maybe it is the degree of difficulty after all. Just getting back into surf fishing after a lifetime away. All this new spinning gear seems overly complicated and high strung making it very vulnerable to failure. We don't have that in the conventional reels. Might try a bait-caster or even a Fathom or Squall casting special? Thanks for the fun video, do more!!

I have the Squall II 12SD but I haven’t been able to get a good cast off it yet though. It doesn’t want to drop easily in free spool. I have to roll it physically with my hand and turn my drag all the way down. Sometimes it even still rolls up if I crank it while it’s in free spool.
    Any advice or info?
I could be doing something wrong.

Hello. You shouldn’t have to undo the drag or touch the drag at all. It sounds like you’re not using the spool disengage lever. It literally takes the spool ‘in and out’ of gear. Try that!
Also watch the clip again and you’ll see me using it!! Also important- set the spool tension knob!!
      Good luck 👍🏼

The new PENN Squall II size 12 cost about $170 US plus tax. I just bought one from Bass Pro Shops/Cabelas (November 2022)

How does the line wind in side to side with no guide piece?

      Push pull motion with thumb

The levelwind version of the Squall moves the line side to wide automatically, but it creates parasitic drag on the cast which reduces distance. The conventional open reels (like the one in the video) have to have the line moved side to side by your finger/thumb.
