*HEY GUYS! We have always felt like our first responsibility is to you as our viewers, not to any brand, which is why we don’t shy away from showing you guys when something doesn’t go as planned. This video is an honest view of what our experiences were with this unit. We cooked the pork butt on our other channel (Pellets and Pits - th-cam.com/video/w1pJQo5giu8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sVqLWnZYSGYxeOi_ ) and we experienced a different issue during that cook as well. This could just be a one in a million occurence, and we just got unlucky. We’re consumers also, just like you guys, so since we were unhappy overall with the unit, we decided to return it.
I have seen similar reviews that say the same thing about this combo. They seemed to have rushed this to the market, because its a hot combo right now. Thanks for keeping it real!!
Neal, I don't know for sure but the problem may have been caused by the dust in the pellets. I have a Oklahoma Joe's pellet bucket that has a sifter in it and I use it to remove the dust. Since I started doing that I haven't had any problems whatsoever. Not saying that's the problem just guessing. I have a Z Grill and that solved my problem, just by sifting out the dust.
Definitely see if you’re able to remove that pellet grate as others have said. I’ve had the same issue on numerous pellet grills and just have to check it every so often during the cook to move the pellets around. It does take away from the set it and forget aspect of using a pellet grill but, it’s not a deal breaker once you understand it’s just part of the cook. Great video providing a true experience and not just the positive sides of the product!
I have the same problem on my son’s pit boss smoker, we removed the top grid so we could keep the pellets over the auger when the hopper is at a lower level. My Traeger pro 34 has the same issue but the traeger didn’t come with the top grid. I just purchased my first blackstone and I’m really excited to get started, I’ve been watching several of your videos and you make it look so easy!
Good day Neil & Amy! The dip looked awesome. Great job with the Blackstone unit. I appreciate the honesty and true review. Hey, if its not a great unit, its not a great unit. There may be many different variables why the unit failed in some areas and thats why you make these videos. It gives us, the viewer, the option to make better decisions and allow us to do our research. Thanks for the video and GRIDDLE ON DUDES.
Awesome video once again. First thing I would do is remove that grate at the top of the pellet hopper so I could reach in and help the pellets get where they need to be. Funny story is a guy I work with was cooing 10 pork butts for his wedding reception so I borrowed 3 smokers from friends of mine. One was a brand new pit boss that had the same style screen and I took it out and he never noticed when I brought it back. That was a fun cook. Two pit boss, one old one new. A tailgate traegar and my old lil tex 22 traegar and a green mountain. I was totally impressed with the GMG. That thing held temp to the exact setting. Traegars and put bosses swing plus/minus ten degrees.
Cheese Steak Dip looks delicious. Seems to me that something is not working the right way on the pellet smoker maybe the temperature problem is not working the right way. You are a honest man Neal and we respect you for being the way that you are. Enjoy your dip and have an awesome day.
Neil ,Amy I love your honesty ! That griddle is probably for the average home owner who uses it once a week or less. Not someone like you guys who use it twice a week or more. Question : can you call the company and have them change it out for you ? After all there are thousands of people who watch you and might buy one.. talk about COLD. it's 22 degrees below zero out here we had a power outage in my town that put over one thousand homes out of power for about 4 hours. I could have climbed in a walk in freezer to warm up !!! Imagine that . Sorry for complaining like that but now I need to call in a plumber to fix the frozen pipes. Not a word about it on the news either ! O yea good video guys.. FRANK FROM MONTANA.......
Looks awesome Neal! So glad you put the Bell pepper 🫑 in 🤣🤣. Blackstone definitely needs to look into the hopper issue. Nice save though! Have a fantastic week! Cheers brother 🍻
Neil, I feel your pain as I had the same issue with a burnout in one of my first cooks. Here’s what I found out: When you fill your hopper too full, “tenting” can occur - that’s when the weight of the pellets causes them not to fall evenly into the auger. If you look at the pellets, they are uneven lengths. Too much of them on top of each other and they cause an igloo-type effect. Once they start to fall unevenly into the auger, you’re screwed unless you notice right away. My pellet smoker also doesn’t have a low temp/low pellet indicator. I have learned how far I can fill my hopper up in order to avoid this condition, and you will too - it’s all about experimenting. Wish it wasn’t that way, but I’m also not paying thousands of dollars for an error-free smoker as I’m not a competition smoker…. Also found that on mine when I dump pellets in, I stir them around once I’m done dumping - looks like you can’t do that with yours as there’s that diffuser in your way - if you can remove that, I would. It’s unnecessary and in the way of you manually managing your pellet hopper. Prob some safety thing as at some point a door got their finger caught in the auger….. 🙄🤦🏼♂️
Learned real early with my pellet smoker you have to check on the pellets. I think they all do the same thing causing that "cone of depression" type thing with the pellets. Over night smokes usually are a very low temp and don't use a lot of pellets. I have a smaller Traeger and it has no problems of 8 hours unattended smoking.
thats an amazing recipe nice cook.. thats a sweet pit. on my list to get this spring.. my grandpa had me making so much tallow in the late 60s. i dont even mess with it now take it apart looking the burn pot see if pellets are dropping. i own several pellet grills. they have pellet dams . where the pellet dont fall. like a log jam. i got used to stirring them up with a stick lol
Although I completely agree… what would you do if you cooked over or longer cooks. Only my opinion is that’s the idea of a pellet grill turn and and leave alone. Having to manually play with the pellets takes the fun out of cooking. My pit boss, Traeger, and lone star have not had that problem
All the pellet grills I have seen do the same thing... You just have to keep the pellets pushed down on the sides... It is what it is... Great recipe...
Love the video. On the pellet smoker: the first thing I did was take that hopper grate off. I like to keep my pellets straight across and it will prevent the dam you are talking about. I’ve never heard of a low pellet alarm. Must be the newer models. I’ve had my camp chef and Trager a couple of years.
I know my Pit boss does not have it...the manual was so vague about the pellet grill it was hard to know what it actually had...My lone star and traeger have em...
Get it figured out and all will be perfected. You have the recipe worked out great according to the taste tester and yourself . It does look fabulous. Stay safe and have fun . Fred.
My outbids did the same thing!! Cleat the hopper clean the pellet dust out really good then spray the hopper down with Pam let dry refill pellets they will slide down really easy!! Do it every time u change pellets!!!!
I’m definitely going to make this. Also, I have a Z grills 7000 series and I’ve never had a fire go out. The one thing that I thought about when you restarted your pellet grill was a potential explosion. Pellet grill explosions are real and when you start your pellet grow as I’m sure you know you should leave the lid open. That probably applies to a restart as well.
First thanks for commenting...we have been talking behind the scenes...so for Blackstone does not state that the lid needs to be open...which to me is odd...But my lone star and traeger say the same....the only one that says to open....it my pit boss
Going to try that dip in my Cook Shack smoker (insulated and holds the desired temp well in cold weather). Don’t have a pellet smoker. We have a pellet stove in the bedroom that holds a 40# sack of pellets. It feeds the entire sack to the feed auger until it’s completely empty. I think it does so because the walls of the hopper are a steeper angle than that Blackstone. What you might have to do is ensure that your hopper remains on the full side or you’ll have to stir the pellets in the hopper frequently for a continuous MANUAL feed as the pellet level decreases.
Purchased a pit boss last year it never happened to me what happened to you but I was concerned that it would so I keep my hopper filled and don't let the hopper get below half then fill it back up .....and by the way the smoked cheesesteak dip looks amazing and will be trying this weekend while watching football ...great videos as always !
Neal, I ran my Yoder out of pellets smoking a Thanksgiving turkey. Now I make sure the hopper is full before a cook. I don't like that hopper design though. When mine ran out I didn't have a single pellet left in the hopper. That is what you should expect IMHO.
I 100 agree...you dont expect to run out of has 1/4 of a tank...plenty of pellets were in there...just didn't funnel correctly...My Lone Star is the same way....
I think that initial white smoke is the anime you don't want, you want it to be that almost blue that you can't see. I had a camp chef and they tell you to start it and it will smoke a lot, and that initial smoke will have that bitter taste you don't want. I think we have all had great BBQ that was perfectly smoked and also the BBQ that tastes like just, smoke. . am I right on that?
My campchef pellet smoker does the same thing. Easy fix............just keep it full and over time you will know how long they last you. I just top it off every time i use it and i havent had any issues. Unless you dont plan on using it for a long time, you dont want the pellets just sitting in there absorbing mositure.
Green peppers may be a must in Philly cheesesteaks. Just remember they are not a Maryland cake must tho 😂. Videos are awesome and fun keep up the good work!
By the time I watched this video I’d already seen the Pellets and Pits pork butt video so I knew about that problem when it wouldn’t get to temp and that you’d decided to return the unit. Unfortunate since it had such promise but… anyway, that Philly Cheesesteak dip with crostinis looks amazing. I can see this being a Happy Hour appetizer in the future.
In both of my pellet grills I took the cross piece out in the top of the pellet chamber. That way I could Swirl My pellets around to prevent that from happening
I saw Weber has a nice looking updated pellet smoker this year... Looks like a good one. I kind of thought the Blackstone unit works be clunky and not great.
Hey guys, Happy New Year. Just wanted to let you guys know that if you have an Aldi's nearby, they actually sell shave steak In the fresh meat case which is Made for cheese steaks. Was born and raised in the Philadelphia area. And use aldi's shave steak often for cheesesteaks. I know they have it in Tennessee. Because my brother just moved there and we just had cheese steaks over Christmas When I visited. I brought the rolls from Philly Though Just thought i'd let you In on that secret have a great day Keep up the good work
The pellets bridged over the feed and formed a void blocking the supply to the auger. That would be my guess.. I've seen that in several other applications. Icemakers, grain wagons, anything gravity fed, etc. I've seen it in my Traeger grill. Bang on it, or poke something at it to break the void. It's not an often occurrence, but it's not a rare issue either.
The cook looked good..I've done a couple of smoked dips , but not a Philly one..my pitboss vertical has a 40lb.hopper , so I've not had that issue..love the new machine tho ! GO VOLS
My first Traeger would go out at least once per 12 hour smoke. Got a remote thermometer that had a low temperature alarm. Still a pain in the behind getting up at 3am to clear out the pellet hopper and restart the smoker.
I know Weber had a similar issue with pellets funneling in the hopper and they had to make a slope to help with it. Problem is it will take away from the capacity of the hopper.
Thank you for this video. It looks like you need to keep the hopper rather full. Of course, that is just my guess, based on the images you showed. I could be wrong.
A cheesesteak dip for the first cheesesteak griddle cook? I don't think so! You gotta do a cheesesteak next, and then breakfast! 😄 Another one I'll have to try! Too cold to griddle here now. Had 6F this morning! Just not happenin'! I had the same thing happen to me on my Pit Boss smoker on New Years Day trying to finish my pork butts because I didn't add enough pellets and don't like to add a bunch because the pellet chute is a pain to drain! I just finished 2 hours later than planned.
That's what we call the Funnel Of Death......I get it on my Camp Chef but has never been an issue but I always start with a full hopper (20lbs) of pellets and only burn about 1lb per hour and I move the pellets around every time I check my cook
Just to add my own data point regarding pellet smokers. I have a first gen Rec Tec 640 pellet smoker. I once tried to use Lumberjack Apple Pellets in it and it almost lit my whole hopper on fire. I called the owners of Rec Tec and they confirmed that soft fruitwood pellets like Apple can cause what was happening, basically the pellets were burning too slow, that the fire pot was filling up and catching fire to everything up the auger before they could fully burn. Luckily I was home and awake and could turn it off before the fire reached the hopper. This may not happen with all pellet smokers, but it’s a word of warning.
Neil great video but this is a problem with ALL pellet smokers . It doesn't make blackstone product bad . I was thinking if they made a smaller OR a round pellet will fix this problem .
Unfortunately I have not had the same with my others...I have had 5 different pellet grils and never have I had the augre run dry with plenty of pellets still left...so I cant say with ALL...
Let me tell you what shipmate. My wife watches your video and tells me she wants me to make that. I watch your videos and tell her I want to buy that. So needless to say, you guys entertain both of us and always cost one of us money😂.
That looks awesome. I can't wait to try this. Looks like Blackstone should have made the pallet hopper walls a little steeper. Probs give it a tap or 2 when the hopper runs low. Appreciate you Neil.
I mean this with no disrespect....I have received a few comments like this..I completely disagree..I have and had several pellet grills...this is not common with the ones I have or do use. in my mind the whole point of a pellet grill is the connivence...if I have to come outside to stir the pellets...whats the difference between that and a stick burner..I do understand the amount of pellets could have hurt it...but the first time was well over 25 percent...plenty enough for a 20 min cook time
Personally the stop n go peppers for color , a jalapeño finely sliced and a couple banana pepper rings evenly spread across .... woooweee ol son now ya gotta cheese steak . Peace & love to everyone
What you experienced with the pellets is what I call “the cone of death.” There’s plenty of pellets in the hopper, but they stop feeding into the auger. The only way to prevent that is to keep the hopper full of pellets.
@@TheFlatTopKing I have a Camp Chef pellet cooker. But I haven’t used it since I picked up a Masterbuilt Gravity Series charcoal grill. BTW, I watch all of your videos, keep up the good work!
Sadly I've had nothing but problems with the pellet portion of this model maintaining temps. Blackstone sent me a replacement part but the problem continued. I will be sending it back to Lowes this week
Since mine was returned so fast...any idea why or what is happening...we have had several people now say the same thing...at first I felt extremely bad because I didnt want to blame etc...but after more and more came out....i knew it wasnt just me...
I personally do not think so. That my personal opinion. There are things on this I wish it had that others have I just haven’t expressed them yet. No live open flame. No pellet dump etc.
Hey, Extremely interested in this combo unit but I can't find it on Blackstone's site. I do however live in Canada; is it maybe so new that it isn't out yet?
The problem is your pellets have drawn moisture being outside. And they kinda form a brick. It the moisture in the air. That's all. You just have to swish them around before you use them and then keep a eye on them, to make sure they are funneling in.
Its a brand new unit..I just put a new bag in the day before...these pellets are the same one in my Pit Boss and just used it yesterday for my other channel...definitely not a pellet issue..
The cheesesteak dip looks excellent. But, I’ve personally seen you work with a lot of food on those Blackstone Grills and unfortunately they have never turned out well.. So, do you use other things?
We are in Texas and Jalapenos replace green pepper in everything. Made this dish and it was huge success with wife and neighbors. Smoked with pecan wood in real smoker , Not pellet grill; Thank You for the base recipe!!!
The smoker will always have that issue, it appears that blackstone didn’t angle the sides enough for the pellets not to hang up . Your going to have to fill the hopper all the way so the issue doesn’t happen again.
This video is a great example of why you always need a backup plan when smoking/grilling. Things happen and if you don't have backup plans you can ruin what you're cooking. This is why I personally have several grills, and as you showed, your kitchen oven is always a great backup as well.
After watching both new video drops today, it appears that this particular BS is BS. On another note the Philly Dip looks amazing. I'll making that for sure.
For $1200 bucks of my hard earned money the grill should work perfectly out of the box. I shouldn’t have to stir pellets but rather pour them in and start the grill. I’d take it straight back to the point of purchase for a refund. Stop buying Chinese junk!
I love your reviews. A lot of products a hyped, but you don't bite! Keep doing you. Point out every minor and even major flaw. You will only improve the product, and you will get more products to fairly review. Don't sugarcoat anything. Press on!

Did you return this unit for a new one or did they walk you through the problem? I see you are still using it after the pork butt problem. Thanks.

It looks like you need to keep the hopper rather full. Of course, that is just my guess, based on the images you showed. I could be wrong.
I would think so too...
With Amy's idea of upping the meat content I bet that would make a great filling for a quesadilla.
Very true.
TY....
Thats interesting and not heard of that...thanks for sharing....
😂😂😂😂👊👊👊👊🤝🤝
That looks awesome. I can't wait to try this. Looks like Blackstone should have made the pallet hopper walls a little steeper. Probs give it a tap or 2 when the hopper runs low. Appreciate you Neil.
Thanks bud
You’ve got to take out the grate and stir your pellets every so often. Big cooks, fill it to the brim for pressure to push them down.
I mean this with no disrespect....I have received a few comments like this..I completely disagree..I have and had several pellet grills...this is not common with the ones I have or do use. in my mind the whole point of a pellet grill is the connivence...if I have to come outside to stir the pellets...whats the difference between that and a stick burner..I do understand the amount of pellets could have hurt it...but the first time was well over 25 percent...plenty enough for a 20 min cook time
Always possible to get a lemon, no matter how great a product is. That said, delicious dip !!👍😊
True...hate it..but just wasn’t ment to be...
Personally the stop n go peppers for color , a jalapeño finely sliced and a couple banana pepper rings evenly spread across .... woooweee ol son now ya gotta cheese steak .
Peace & love to everyone
👊👊
Does any of your other pellet smokers have a warning for low pellets?
What you experienced with the pellets is what I call “the cone of death.” There’s plenty of pellets in the hopper, but they stop feeding into the auger. The only way to prevent that is to keep the hopper full of pellets.
Yeah...i think so to...unfortunately we ended up having more problems and just returned it....
I’m thinking of purchasing this. I currently run a Pitboss Austin xl. Is this going to cook the same? Comparable pellet smoker?
I personally do not think so. That my personal opinion. There are things on this I wish it had that others have I just haven’t expressed them yet. No live open flame. No pellet dump etc.
Hey, Extremely interested in this combo unit but I can't find it on Blackstone's site. I do however live in Canada; is it maybe so new that it isn't out yet?
Hey bud...no its only available on Lowes....its an exclusive...
I use a paint stir stick, and stir every hour.
I think if pellet stoves use a shape where it's a steeper pitch as it gets closer to the auger that that would/could solve that particular issue.
agree....
Do you think you would have to keep this heated if you were serving it a party? What would it be like as it cooled?
That is a great question...Honestly I do not know....I think heated would be the way to go...BUT....I have been more wrong than right..
my gmg will start wailing when the pellets get low, it has a sensor. you should see it in your hopper if its there.
Yeah...after looking...just not sure it has one....i have other smokers that have em as well...
I honestly dont think I understand the question...maybe Im missing something
@@TheFlatTopKing oh, I just wanted to know if you use another grill other than black stone.
i'll take your cold over my cold any day i got -10 F today here in Illinois and about a foot of snow. my griddle season has come to an end.
Yeah...we lived in Wyoming for years...we understand...we have 6-8 in now and below 0 wind chill....for east Tennessee...thats crazy town...
What’s next cheesesteak face cream ? Cheesesteak pudding?
Cheesesteak lasagna?
Cheesesteak lasagna sounds perfect...thanks for the idea
We are in Texas and Jalapenos replace green pepper in everything. Made this dish and it was huge success with wife and neighbors. Smoked with pecan wood in real smoker , Not pellet grill; Thank You for the base recipe!!!
That is awesome!
did it seize up with moisture in the pellets
Fresh bag...I dont think it seized...I think the pellets did not funnel correctly causing the auger to run empty and causing the fire to burn out....
The smoker will always have that issue, it appears that blackstone didn’t angle the sides enough for the pellets not to hang up . Your going to have to fill the hopper all the way so the issue doesn’t happen again.
Thanks for the feedback...I just ended up returning it...
Probably could use a little tap on the side every now and then
This video is a great example of why you always need a backup plan when smoking/grilling. Things happen and if you don't have backup plans you can ruin what you're cooking. This is why I personally have several grills, and as you showed, your kitchen oven is always a great backup as well.
Well said. Thanks for commenting
The cheesy Philly steak nazis are hilarious 😂
Hahahaah amen. Cheers bud.
Are you a navy man
Yes...
a $30 dip? 🤑
How did you get $30....$7 dollar steak...few veg and cheese
I'm all for it if you can find that steak for $7, that's a $15 steak around here. Looks great regardless. Love the content. @@TheFlatTopKing
After watching both new video drops today, it appears that this particular BS is BS. On another note the Philly Dip looks amazing. I'll making that for sure.
Heck yeah...thanks for the 2 channel support...
Press on!
