One thing that really bothers me is how much the 2D animation has been downgraded compared to 2D animation from the past Disney movies. They used to be the kings of 2D animation, but ever since abandoning it in favor of CGI, they’re 2D department is noticeably getting worse. It’s very telling that they had to rehire aging 2D animators for Mary Poppins returns rather than train new young blood. It’s honestly sad that they just abandoned their style of 2D animation in favor of this cheap looking cel shaded crap. At least they still utilize 2D animation in rough pencil animations for movies like Encanto so it’s not completely dead, but they’re treating CGI as the next step of animation rather than seeing it as a completely different medium.

I find it really insulting that they pull a "remember Roger Rabbit!?" I just want to say "remember Richard Williams!?" This film feels like it's dancing on his grave.
As many have said before, the "traditional" animated model is **clearly** an just a 3d model with cel shading at a lower framerate while lacking squash and stretch! Not only that, the facial expressions feel muted and robotic.
There's nothing inherently wrong with using 3d models to make "traditional" animation in order to save time and work. There are plenty of instances where using 3D models can be used to make animation that actually looks "traditional" (Worthikids, Fox in Space, etc).

    • @diehounderdoggenalt
      @diehounderdoggenalt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      >lack of squash and stretch
That's it. Couldn't put my finger on it but that's probably the biggest reason the "2D" characters look like crap.
Second culprit imo is the lack of realistic shading on them. Like, going back to Roger Rabbit every single shot with a toon character had an extra dedicated cel just for the shadows, helped along no doubt by the fact that Richard Williams was some kind of savant when it came to drawing three dimensional objects in motion. It really sold the idea that these were painted characters living in a 3D world.
This animation sells the idea that Disney wanted to renew the copyright on a nostalgic franchise as cheap as possible.

Being self-aware while also being sincere takes a good writer since you're practically trying to connect two opposite ideas at the same time, but it can be done really well! Abed Nadir from Community is a good example of this. His main gimmick throughout the show is that he's able to point out the common movie and sitcom tropes that goes on within his and his friend's life, solely because he grew up with TV as a child as a form of escapism from his parent's divorce. When you compute the length of time between 'The Event' and 'Nostalgia For The Event,' the span seems to be about 'a year less in each cycle.' Eventually, within the next quarter of a century the nostalgia cycles will be so close together that people will not be able to take a step without being nostalgic for the one they just took. Rescue Rangers was, allegedly, a sarcastic pitch made by someone who was pissed off about being assigned to come up with stuff involving legacy characters like Chip and Dale, but then the executives in charge took the pitch seriously and tasked them with developing their deliberately bad idea. I'm legitimately irritated by how lazy "2D animated" Chip is. Like, if you pause around 6:07, you get a pretty good look at the linework on Chip's shirt and you can see that THE LINES AREN'T EVEN STRAIGHT! They're crooked and awkward and look terrible. However, this normally wouldn't be a problem in frame by frame animation, since each frame is only on screen for a tiny fraction of a second. As long as the linework is close enough to looking like the previous and next frames, then it's impossible to scrutinize the linework this way. But they didn't do frame by frame animation, hell, they didn't even do 2D animation. Chip is so obviously a 3D model that has some stuff drawn on it in blender or some other modeling software. They are so lazy to not even commit to the fucking gimmick that the movie is based on.
The absolute worst part about this travesty is that Chip, Dale, Gadget, and Monterey Jack have already appeared in the new Ducktales show on Disney XD. They have good designs because the people who work on that show clearly have talent! Why did Disney not just hire them to work on this movie? Disney made Who Framed Roger Rabbit, a fact that they clearly know since they reference it in the trailer, which means that they have a documented process that both works and can be improved upon if needed for making 2D animation function in a 3D space. A team of talented people could absolutely pull this off with the right resources.
The only reason as to why this movie looks so awful is because nobody with any control over the project cared. It's that obvious.
Edit: I just noticed after watching the trailer in a different window that the reason why the lines on Chip's shirt are crooked is because the shirt is also a 3D object, so the shirt is covering the lines unevenly, so my point about frame-by-frame animation is moot. However, this just makes my point about how little they were willing to commit to 2D animation even more relevant.

I dont think I've ever seen a trailer that made me want to jump off a skyscraper before but this one does it.

Mixing the animation styles this tastelessly makes the movie feel like an asset flip

The Indiana Jones reference was because of Chip's outfit. Him and Dale on that show were dressed as Indiana Jones and Magnum P.I. for no reason. There's probably a Magnum P.I. reference in the movie too.

Honestly glad they're releasing it on Disney+.

I hate celebrity voice acting with every fiber of my being. That’s just John Mulaney talking. He’s putting no effort to be anyone else. That ain’t Chip, he’s just John Mulaney. That’s just Seth Rogen. Ffs get voice actors who will put effort in

The Lonely Island are such talented writers and performers, but giving them an effects-heavy reboot working under Disney is quite possibly the worst environment to use them in.

Ever the optimist, I'm hoping this might be a honey i shrunk the kids situation, where they're able to work within the confines to make a good movie... Modern Disney is way different than honey i shrunk the kids though.

Oh wow. Disney stooped to doing the full screen title card of big hollywood actors to market an animated movie they're pushing? Are they Illumination now? (The answer is yes, but how the mighty have fallen).

Well written and layered humor > Lazily crafted and predictable meta jokes.
    Just because a film's self-referential doesn't mean it's self-aware.

This will be nothing more than a reference holocaust with no actual story to tell only characters to sell.

6:36 What I don't understand is, they have Pumbaa with his 2019 voice and design, but Scrooge with his 80's design and 2017 voice. If you're going to do meta, at least have your meta-ness with some level of internal consistency.
Edit: The movie has now released and I am both proud and slightly ashamed to say I correctly identified David Tennant by only a laugh.
