A project to ensure kid's-, bicycle's, car's, and pedestrian's safety and security in traffic, performed by EKC Sweden AB in Sweden.
The company EKC Sweden was founded in 1996 and in its current form has existed in Sweden since 1999. Since the start in Sweden, the company has been a significant player in road marking in the Scandinavian countries.

Thermoplastic road marking lines and arrows for cars and pedestrians, project in Stockholm-Sweden!
These guys are amazing and perform a great teamwork everyday across the city in order to keep a high standard of traffic security.
Most of the projects starts after midnight or during vacation period so there are less traffic on roads. To keep the roads and traffic secure is one of the most expensive tasks for the tax payer in Sweden.

Thermoplastic road marking project performed by Swedish company EKC Service AB www.ekc.se/
How much does it costs?
Each arrows mark costs around 200 SEK ($18)! And each meter of the ViaTherm thermoplastic material road marking lines costs around 70 SEK ($7) / Meter!
In this project they used a new thermal material called HotMix. ThermLite from Geveko Markings is also used.
The material is supplied ready to use without the admixture of any other component.
HotMix quickly hardens after application, thereby minimizing traffic disturbance.
Neither the organic pigments nor the other components of ViaTherm or HotMix thermoplastic road marking are harmful to the environment.
In Australia, this task would require 2 more vehicles and 4 more crew, doing nothing but traffic control, because our drivers are stupid and don't drive safely at roadworks. Nice to see that modern "basic" road safety systems are all that are needed, when drivers are sensible. Truck mounted attenuator, some flashing lights, and some brains. Although I would add about 4 traffic cones to the scene, directly behind their line of work. Nice work gentlemen.

The road markings are 3D hence they look skewed to us. They make more sense to the drivers when they are a few feet away from them.

In Mexico we paint it with normal white paint and it lasts 1 month. The goverment takes 3 years to re-paint the lines again.

Its quik but in OZ we lay them down as cut out arrows and melt down look perfect when finished beads need to go on quicker too

That feeling when you get it on your skin and you have to wait for it to cool down.
Who makes the thermo applicators? In the US we use handliner carts (like Apollo) or self propelled buggies (minimac 400). I can see some situations where the tools used in the video would be really handy. Not sure if they would meet our specs though as I think the bead applicator needs to be part of the thermoplastic applicator. Great video. Good to see how striping work is done in other places. =
I think the company that made those thermoplastic applicator is a German company.
That and any DOT violations. Lane closures require message boards a mile back, cones, barrels for night work, crash trucks even if you're doing a small turn lane, ect, etc. But those little hand liners are cool.

Why don't they mix in the reflective powder in the giant paint mixer before it's painted down and dried?
RicoGalassi I would assume because the powder would get covered by the thermoplastic (paint) and the glass/sand mixture wouldn't be reflective which would defeat the overall purpose of the powder.

This way of doing it by hand is only used where there is a lack of space and a lot of traffic, on major roads machines are used.

Dos any one know what type of painting did they use? And what was that powder coating?
The "paint" hot thermoplastic. The second layer is glass powder (%85) for reflection purpose in combination with sand (15%) to make the surface became hard quicker.
Why they putting glass powder I know the government have not lot of money to paint it every day or month they put glass powder to make it harder and harder and the paint just crack after 8-9 months because in glass powder it has 15% sand

I cannot get over how well behaved the motorists are, I was part of a team cleaning up some invasive weeds in rural Australia years ago and no amount of signage would get people to slow down, this was back in the early 2000s..
a officer once every so often in between those road blocks and fines 3x higher then in a normal situation will do the trick

In the UK the road would have been closed off 2 days before then a team of workers over the next 5 days and then 10 days to dry,, then 6 months later the cones would have been collected

In NZ. We need hundreds of cones twice as many trucks. Limited speed zones and are so anal, I'm sure we forget the road markings. Good to see a few workers doing a lot of work.
Because idiot drivers would make the entire thing unsafe for the road workers.
In California, we usually use 4 inches for the streets, but for the freeways, it is 6 inches. Both of them have that are called road studs. It is uncommon in most countries to have road studs, except for certain situations involving improving visibility and safety.
We can't have those in Sweden because we have snow and the snowplows would destroy them
We have reflective road markings (that's the powder they are applying) and small poles with reflective circles on them next to the roads.
Can the material scraped out of the applicator be reheated and used ?

Yes, stating 20:21 you can see this process (scraped and old material gathers together) ready to be put back into the hot oven 1:19 for reuse.
Fantastic work! But there is one thing that I do not understand: They always hurry to get the powder on the fresh painted lines and arrows, which actually means that the material is still warm and viscous. But at the same time, they can roll over a fresh line without damaging it before it is powdered. For example 10:40. How is that possible?
That powder is a combination of glass (~80%) and sand and is used for reflection purpose.
So, the scraped material was put in that glass and sand mixture or was it different?
I hate those lines.. They're even more slippier than regular one.. Not good for motorcyclists...

In the UK, Our liners (road markers) dont give a crap about TM. They will just start painting a road junction and let the cars handle themselves lol.

That's different from the U.S. because they use the MUTCD, whereas most countries have their own under the Vienna convention.

I really like those 2 applicators that look like 8" and 18" , very maneuverable and simple, I can't find any info about that type of tool. do you know the brand or manufacturer, I'd like to use these instead of the full machines marketed here in the US?

Does the main large tank of material always stay heated to keep liquid or can it be liquified again once cooled and solidified?
IN THE UK, this just would not happen, if it wears out, drivers are supposed to remember where they were until the whole road gets re-done !!!

Melted plastic. Says it in the video title. Nope, not environmentally friendly, because its plastic, and yes it will end up back in nature eventually as it erodes away, just like the rubber on car tyres all ends up back in the environment :-)

Not saying your wrong in this case, but there are environmentally safe plastics.
Some are corn based..
Regardless the lines need painting... I suspect actual paint that would hold up is probably worse than the plastic.

Here in Uruguay the roads are pothole over pothole and the govt paints over them

If i remember right it's a weight, in case you are working for long periods of time you may want to leave it there for a while, but you wont need to leave the car overnight, on the highway for example.

Regarding the translation, in the conversation is mostly about "What are you guys going to do with the rest of the HotMix and Thermoplastic material"? And they answered, "We are going to pour it back in the oven again (at the back of the truck, 1:23) and reuse them, as long as the material are not so dirty/contaminated, (which they are at 11:15) but clean and can be reused at 18:39.
you guys should scrub the older ones prior to coating the new paint over.
At 450 to 500 degrees it won't matter. Not enough remaining of old markings to make a difference
