I got a black Pocket at the start of the year and happy to see it has all of these improvements. It's probably my favourite electronic device that I own. For me, the price is totally fair for the quality and it bugs me when people who clearly don't own one say they need to drop the price (they obviously don't, as their units sell out). The batch releases and limited editions cater to scalpers, so I get why that's annoying... I just don't get why people feel they're entitled to premium products without a premium price tag. Get a cheap retro handheld instead if it's out of your budget. Plenty of good options on the market.
I'd agree if it was the price they say it was, but I had to pay £160 for the device, which was a decent price, but then it was £60 for P&P, then another £70 for taxes, so nearly £300 for a Game Boy is a little much imo, even if it is the best Game Boy available, I know it's more than that, but I could have paid an extra £100 and got a Steam Deck OLED, which had I known first hand how much it would cost total, I may have done.
@@Jbayz If I had brought the dock for the pocket, it would have been nearly £400 all in, at least for the Steam Deck you don't need one as you can get DP output without it.
Its definitely a niche item. If you only care about emulating roms then this will not appeal to you. There are cheaper emulation devices. But if you want a device that can play your original cartridges on a sharp screen without blurring, can dock to a television in HD, AND just so happens to play roms then it's great. From my experience ROM bros only care about cheap emulation so they will trash this thing every time they get a chance.
It's the fact that it plays ROMs that makes it appealing, as it plays them with 0ms--1ms latency, meaning bare-metal real hardware performance, it's almost like having a proper console & CRT in your hand, not to mention the immaculate synth audio and DAC it has, doubles up as a MIDI/FM/Tracker player, possibly the first handheld to be able to do that accurately, outside a Sega Nomad or something.
I got mine December 2022 and initially one of the shoulder buttons just didn't feel really good. Turned out it had to break in and after pressing it more it felt just fine. I've heard some complaints from early adopters that I didn't experience and it seems like they've made subtle improvements with every wave without mentioning any of it.
I got mine in November 2022 and it appears to have all the same improvements as the one you have here. Very happy with the Pocket myself, despite it's hefty price tag.
I have a 2nd batch original black unit. The power and volume is also close to flush to the console. Never been a problem. As for the dpad and buttons. They are still clicky. I also have the indigo aluminium unit. That has the more prominent side buttons.
I recall all the hype when Duo was announced and ppl saying how they’ll finally be able to afford buying a Duo cuz an original was too expensive and I was like, you think the console is expensive try hunting down the games especially the good ones not to mention the North American had a relatively small library of games making the Duo rather geared towards ppl that have a decent library of games already or disposable income. I was excited for the Analogue Duo cuz I do have a large library of games and looked forward to reducing ware on my original TurboDuo console. So unless Analogue unshackles the Duo like they did for the Pocket, OpenFPGA the Duo will remain in stock for a very long time.
@@dwightdixon8508 I got sick of waiting for the duo, I bought a CoreGrafx for like.. $40.. and a second hand SSDS3 for 170.. they do the trick for me :) OG hardware ftw
@@dwightdixon8508 OpenFPGA on the Duo would be awesome, but there is at least a jailbreak firmware for it. I'm a weirdo that bought the Duo. In fact, it's the only Analogue device I own so far lol. I like it for that, but I'm interested in (maybe) an Analogue Pocket now too. Pocket + Dock + OpenFPGA cores could effectively replace the Duo and make it redundant, so I can see why so many people don't see the need to buy it, especially if they already have those.
I just got a black analogue pocket at the same time they released the new colors, and it seems to have the same changes as the model you just picked up
Great video! I know the right shoulder button was a problem for me. It would stick and sometimes wouldnt register. Hopefully they really did fix something and it wasn't just a better unit.
i'm a big fan of Analogue Pocket & even got my daughters husband to get one! Mine is still working great, but after you mentioned the Tetris thing i was thinking my old Tetris game on the Game Boy is going bad because my blocks shift that way too! Turns out it's the Analogue Pocket D-Pad! Wild. So maybe i will Christmas myself a new one this year! Once again thanks for the Retro Break & Good Bye!
My analogue pocket seems to be a revision that came out between the two of yours, my power and volume buttons are not flush with the case, my cartridge slot is not as loose as your launch one but also not as tight as your new one, and my d pad isnt noisy at all but it also doesn't give me that problem with tetris. I got my pocket from a scalper like a year ago so I'm not sure exactly which batch it's from, you've made me consider getting a new one next time they put out limited edition variants though, I like me a clicky D Pad.
Love the screen and look but HATE Analogue's artificial shortages and high prices, as well as the outrageous shipping costs. Will never buy from them. I am very happy with my Funny Playing FPGBC and my GBA with IPS screen.
Very interesting differences! I purposely skipped on purchasing the new releases since I had the launch Pocket. You've made me reconsider this next time around. Thanks for sharing.
Analogue is a small company with little capital selling via preorders so they don’t take on losses. They only make console(s) and handheld devices and a few accessories. Whereas Nintendo, Sony & Microsoft sell games, licenses, subscriptions and large amounts of accessories offsetting losses on console sales the first couple of years on the market. Analogue “business practices” isn’t any different than independent video game companies selling via preorders.
The only thing I have of theirs is Mega SG, you got one too? I really like it! But I also really, really like my MiSTer 😅 and your new analogue pocket is a beauty!
Agreed, Analogue are somewhat anti-consumerist which is annoying. It also saddens me that they don't do the Mega SG or Super NT anymore. This is a very informative video as a friend of mine has a spare original Analogue Pocket he was looking to sell and I was on the fence about it, but now I know if I am going to get one, it's the MK2 (If they have the stock). On the subject of the D pads, I have always felt Sega made the best D pads on their systems (The dreamcast I exclude as I never liked the cross) Good video, keep up the good work and enjoy your video games.
You’re a bad man 😂 I brought the original Analogue Pocket after watching your video on the original now I am tempted again. The thing is are the upgrades worth paying for another Pocket, it feels like the upgrade from the PS5 to the PS5 Pro. What do you think ? P.s Loving the video 😎
