    Richard Corben; the man who made 2D comics go 3D with fully dimensional characters with realistic lighting even when they weren't painted, and were simply pen and ink. It was an amazing development that nobody else has equaled. Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, Mort Drucker, Wallace Wood, Jim Steranko, Moebius, Robert Crumb and Richard Corben and many many more. I loved their works.

    “ clumsy, loud and over the top... gloriously tasteless”. I love that these are the qualities you associate with America.

      I associate a lot with America like great painters, movies, punk, underground, wide open spaces, comics of course ... but extroversion (is this a word at all?), triple whopper and my loud christian trumploving aunt from Montana as well. And I love some Whopper and I am a big fan of American oldtimers.

      earl grey just to be clear, I wasn’t offended in the least. As an American I find myself pretty embarrassed by the company I seem to keep these days.

      yes, I was certain you understand it, but wanted to be clear myself in case someone else who watches my video feels offended by it (and hey: we Germans often like to be loud neanderthals as well :/ ... actually neandertal IS a german town, a suburb from Düsseldorf, come to think of it, that's where he's got his name from)

      Join Rutracker.org. Most of it is there. You can definitely find all the original Metal Hurlant there where Den first appeared. Back in the days when I smoked weed I remember hurrying home from this big magazine stand that had international language magazine with Metal Hurlant #2 and #3 and just firing up a doob and delving deep into the early morning desert landscape of Corben's Den. Good times, good times. You'll also find all the original underground comics like Rowlf and Fever Dreams and Fangor too. Then there was all the Creepy magazine stories too. Those were in sumptuous color on high grade glossy paper. There were collections of his works. I used to always be dropping by the magazine store so as not to miss the latest Corben paintings. Pirate Bay will have them too. Use a VPN to be safe.

    @Crimson Mask I remember John Severin. He was the inker for the first episodes of Nick Fury Agent of Sheild as they appeared in Strange Tales alongside Dr. Strange episodes by Steve Ditko. Those were some of the best issues ever published by Marvel. Jack Kirby pencilled those strips that Severin inked. Those were excellent and not to be surpassed till Jim Steranko came in with all sorts of experimental techniques and went absolutely crazy. I loved it all.

    I think the mindset was universal. I felt and thought the same when i discovered not just VALENTINA, but DEN, too, in HEAVY METAL as a kid. The colors, as you pointed out, gave the art a near 3 dimensional scope. And as for big American cars, mine is finless, but filled with character. My 1979 FORD RANCHERO and i had our share of adventures at one time.

      the car metaphor was a bit skew, esp. since I have a soft spot for these kinda oldtimers who have generally more soul than all the modern streamlined tindrops with wheels

    I've never seen a picture of Corben his books! a very mysterious figure.
    Funny, back in the 70's Corben seemed very European to me discovering him in Heavy Metal and a scattering of underground comics. To me the few Euro comics I knew about were much more dream like...and so was Corben...but I can now totally see what you mean...he took those elements and them big and crass and american, in his own way.
    Super video.

      if you imagegoogle him, you'll find a more recent picture... still recognizable: scraggy, lean and (yes) mysterious, but not that shy slender boy anymore. I really could identify with his younger geeky self: He looked always like DEN before the metamorphosis.

    Hallo mal wieder!

      Hallo Dir auch, zunächst einmal mein Beileid. Ich hatte schon überlegt, ob ich mal kurz anfragen soll wie's Dir geht...
      aber "derzeit einige andere Interesssen zu verfolgen" finde ich mehr als gesund. Im übrigen habe ich selber eine gewisse Sättigungskurve mit meiner Sammlung erreicht.... wenn auch erst den Anfang derselben, denn es gibt noch einige Comics da draußen, die ich gerne abgreifen möchte.

    Shadows On The Grave looks really good. I have a good chunk of the Den stuff in pamphlet form but that German (?) edition looks nice. Slip In Time was entertaining as well...Lmao I know what you mean about Corben's very early digital colouring efforts! Horrible, really detracted from the artwork. But I think there's such a weird, mutant charm in his grotesque, mish-shapen "bubblegum characters" that however ill-judged his colouring sometimes is the comics are always worth looking at. I found his Luke Cage and Hellboy stuff to be top-tier comics. He's a completely singular creator imho.

    • @earlgrey862
      @earlgrey862  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      actually I DO like his early coloring efforts as well... even if I did not (always) back in the day. Maybe because they are sometimes so wild and out there.

    • @vollsticks
      @vollsticks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm talking specifically about his early digital colouring. When he was using a lot of digital effects for backgrounds-patterns on carpets, curtains etc...that stuff is so pixellated as to be atrocious, there's an especially egregious example in one of his comics which adapts a Poe story-The Black Cat, I think?-and it's very harsh on the eyes. His early traditionally-coloured work is lovely, indeed I think his sense of colour was a big factor which marked him out from the glut of Boris Vallejo imitators in the realm of fantasy illustration. Hell, even his Bat Out Of Hell cover still looks good!

      @earl grey I know I am very late to this "comments" section, but I discovered ur channel not too long ago & am slowly working my way thru ur various vids(not in chronological order), which have all been excellent, btw! Even in instances where I have a different opinion-- which has been rare so far-- u do a good job of conveying ur feelings & thoughts on the topic(artist, style, etc)@ hand in an easy-going, non-combative manner. U seem very knowledgeable about various kinds of comics, art, & the comic book medium, in general. This is another strong suit to ur videos: they are very informative, which means I can learn new things about the medium or certain creators, etc! And I am always looking to gain new knowledge, regardless of the subject matter! And though u impart a lot of knowledge &/or bring awareness to various aspects pertaining to the world of comics, u never come across as pretentious or condescending. Rather, u show a sense of humor & an openness to maybe give something another try by way of viewing it thru a different lens. U come across as genuine & respectful; traits all too frequently absent from other channels dealing w/comics, unfortunately-- where currently, the most popular & commonly found divisive aspect of comics is whether or not a comic, creator, publisher, or even the entire industry is considered to be "SJW" or supporting the "SJW" agenda... an argument that has divided so many fans of not only the comic book world, but of virtually all forms of entertainment, & has just become too exhausting for me to really even talk about, lol(not to mention that due to my manic side of bipolar & the racing thoughts & "pressured speech" that come w/it, this comment is way too long as it is, lolol-- sorry about that). Anyways, w/all of that out of the way, lol... to the point of whether or not u should read Corben's(& Simon Revelstroke's)adaptation of what is considered a classic work of weird fiction/horror by William Hope Hodgson: My answer would be a most enthusiastic YES! It is a *very* weird story that may not appeal to many people; but from what I've learned about ur tastes in comics, u like weird or different comics. It is also very creepy, disturbing, & chilling in both the psychological sense & w/regards to the graphic imagery. But again, u seem to enjoy horror(my favorite genre of comics), so I think u would enjoy it! It is some of Corben's best pen & ink work, imho, rivaling his work on the Eisner-winning, "Hellboy: The Crooked Man", which is saying a lot! While it would have been extra cool to have had Corben on the coloring, the more than capable Lee Loughridge is at the top of his game here, perfectly complimenting & enhancing every aspect of Corben's work, as well as anyone could, w/coloring that feels tailor made for both Corben's drawing & this story of terrifying madness! Loughridge seems to effortlessly glide, in-synch w/Corben, thru the ever-changing scenes of unease & terror, aiding Corben's visual storytelling & the overall narrative of this mindbending story of cosmic & gothic horror by using techniques that enrich & bring to life the appropriate atmosphere for each of those scenes w/the right color palette-- rich, lush, rustic, earthy, muted, gothic, dreary, dark, dreamy, or hallucinogenic-- as is called for. I know a simple "yes" would probably have been better, lol. But my mania is on overdrive right now. In fact, this being a video from 2 yrs ago, u may very well have already read it by now, lol. If so, I hope u enjoyed It! I look forward to watching more videos!😊👍🏻

    I really want to see a movie based on the Den comics, preferably live action. But I wish it could keep the nudity intact, as without it, it would lose its identity. Only a pornographic studio would be willing to do that. But hell, I’d watch it anyways.
