Perfect, just replaced my dashboard lights with green LEDs on my 1998 Ford Expedition. Your video was exactly what I needed. Better than any manual or step by step instructions. Well done sir.
Thank you for the positive review! I've been thinking about doing an update on this video. A few months ago, I swapped the leds to green and really like how they turned out. The blue looked great, but all the other lights should be swapped to match, which is a huge pain. Thanks for watching!
is there a difference on which socket requires a t5 or t10 bulb? Trying to research it but no luck. Just a little confused on that part because i dont wanna order a just t10 just to find out i need a t5 for other sockets.
You chewed up the paint around your headlight switch. There is an easy no pry way to take that out. It involves removing the headlight switch twist knob, and reversing it to go back on and twisting the headlights to the "on" position. This method catches a little tog underneath the twist knob and releases a lock tab that holds the headlight switch assembly in place. No prying needed. :-)
I'm not sure what the differences are but there's 2 headlight switched for these trucks. You describe what I have with the release/lock pin thingies, there's another version that is just tension springs, where it just slides in and out by coaxing with a screwdriver/panel pry tool at the bottom in the center to remove (similar to my 05 superduty, but shape is different from the SD)
Bob Haddock yes they are. As you saw in the video I checked the LEDs prior to installing for polarity and put them in accordingly. Ford actually did this nice, the way the cluster is made the top part of the socket is positive and the bottom negative, at least that is how mine was. So once I knew which was positive and negative on the LEDs, which I checked on a battery charger, I put them in and they all worked the first time. Of course if any didn't work, its like you said just pull it out and rotate 180 degrees and it should work. Thank you for your input and watching the video.
How many LED's are required for the Illumination only for back ground illumination in the trucks instrument cluster? I bought a pack of ten. AND can you tell us which way is pos. and which is neg. so that we don't have to do trial and error? I have researched and have seen that the small internal tab in the diode is positive and large is negative. But witch is witch in the connector? White dot Positive?
This helped I install light bulb for the Speedometer only the lift side is lid so the RPM only the right side is lid up on both them lift is not lid up what did I do wrong
There is a trick for removing the light switch. Pull the knob off rotate it 180 degrees re install it then turn it 90 degrees clockwise. You will feel some spring tension from the catch. This retracts the catch on the left side and gently remove the left side and rotate it out. This allows the assembly to come out with out a lot of prying and no danger of scratching or cracking the dash cover. . It will then snap into place when you are done. Put the knob back also.
Did you have to remove the green tint film or just changing the bulbs did the trick? I’m restoring my old 02 Expy and would like to do this once it comes back from the shop for body work and full repaint 🙌🏼
Anyone thinking of doing this on a vehicle this old should include checking the heater core. It's a $50 part that cost over $1000 in labor to get to and replace (behind the glove box area).
You worry about a heater core when it starts showing signs of pending failure. Luke warm, leaks, foggy windshield. If it’s not doing any of that then I wouldn’t bother with it.
@@johnnyfonk999 I'm not saying otherwise. Mine for instance is already blown. The line has been bypassed but in the meantime I have ZERO heating. All I am saying is give it a good check while you got things open.
attempted this process today, unfortunately I did not realize the bulbs I ordered were 'ice blue' rather than just blue, so there is a fair amount of white light being emitted.. with the green tint that is painted on the dials it still looks just about as green as with the factory bulbs. I ordered the correct bulbs but I fear I may have to use acetone to remove the green tint on the dials to get the desired appearance. Will be giving it another shot when the new bulbs arrive in a few days.
Side note, I got tired of seeing the passenger airbag icon lit up on my gauge cluster so I removed the bulb and left it empty. BAD IDEA, the truck has a sensor that will beep 5 times and repeat 5 times when you start the vehicle if it detects this bulb has burnt out or is missing.

I did mine turned out looking really good the only thing is now how do you change out the light bulbs in the climate control switches for the rear AC that are located on the roof of the also how do you change out the colors on the door lock and window switches to match
I have a 2000 Ford F-150. I am replacing the instrument cluster lights with blue T-5 LED bulbs. The T-5 LED bulbs are polarity. When I install a LED bulb in the high beam indicator, I only get the LED to light up when I pull back on the left side turn-signal stalk or lever. When I push the stalk forward toward the dash so that the high beams are on all of the time and also for the high beam indicator light bulb to stay on all the time, I get no LED light at all. When I reverse the LED bulb polarity, I get no high beam indicator light at all in either direction. Does your T-5 LED bulb for your high beam indicator light up in both directions, forward for full time high beam or reverse (towards you) just to flash oncoming cars to warn them of a cop up ahead or whatever? I'm thinking I may have to use an LED bulb that is non-polarity, works in both directions like the factory original bulbs. But I do not see for sell on Amazon or EBay to where you can buy only one LED T-5 bulb that is non-polarity. Let me know on your truck if your high beam indicator light works in both directions (forward and aft or reverse). Thank You!!
I only did my illumination lamps with LED so I cannot comment with experience on this, although the LED should work correctly when put in using the right polarity. You might have an issue with your multi-switch. Hopefully someone that has done the swap on the high beam indicator came chime in on what their experience has been.
Thank you for sharing this! I have tried this before, but could never find the right socket to fit my specific board... What size, type or number socket did you purchase; did they require any modification? I did find some smaller bulbs. But my lights are STILL green!!!
The 97-98 guys have it nice when it comes to this "mod". Their clusters have a blue background on the boards so even if they were to put in white leds their dashes will light blue, us 99-03 guys have a green film on the boards so no matter what we put in it will shine green. I found in the a/c controls the film isremovable, but the dash is a coating on the board.and if you take it ALL apart and scrape off the coating, you have to first go through the diffuser layer to get to the color layer. Then you have to remove and reinstall the needles if you go that route. I've looked into it. As for sizes, it's been a while, I don't recall. I THINK the smaller ones are 194 and the bigger are 37 or 74 or something like that, all "wedge base" bulbs, again I think its T10 (the wedge base code).
On a side note for those who remove air bags there's a wire that you cut so the check suspension won't turn on. It's good for resale when the new owner for whatever reason wants to go back to air bags
Did you have to upgrade anything for the dash to run the led lights? I put mine in and when I turn on my highbeams the dash goes black but the highbeams turn on. I turn them off and the dash goes back to normal
So if I only wanted to swap out the lighting for my gauges, I would just do the ones labeled "illumination"?? Also... what bulbs did you replace with? Do you have a part number/place? Link?

Would any T5 bulb work for the smaller ones? I'm trying to find ones of the same brand that I got the T10s in, so I can make sure the color blue matches lol, yet the site says they wont fit. Just wanted to make sure that as long as it's a T5, that itll work. Thanks for the vid btw, it really helped me with replacing my bulbs 🤘
I have seen where others have put white LED's in and the panel shows as a whiter blue. There is actually a blue tint in the panel that causes the incandescent bulbs, which are more yellow, to show as green. If you remove the tint then they will be white.
I just picked up a 98 XLT and a few of my illumination bulbs are out and gonna go LED, my question is: Are all the bulbs the same size, including the warning lights?
Great question and thanks for the positive feedback. It required both T-5 and T-10 LED's. I have provided ebay links for the LED's that I used. There were 4 (I think) of the larger ones and a three or so of the smaller ones for illumination. The larger T-10's were for illumination only and the smaller T-5s are used for additional illumination and warning lights. I left the warning lights all as incandescent...at least for now.
Two Keys just installed them today. For anyone doing this on a 98-02 navigator don't pull/pry out the switch for your headlights...it will break lol (i superglued my bezel for it back together halfway), also you will need two 37 size or T5 LEDS to fill the top 2 "ILL" spots. And 5 194 for the rest. I did mine in white which resulted in a skyblue colour. Keep in mind the film is blue...the only reason its green stock is because the halogen bulbs are yellowy white. So if if you want say purple, just buy red leds, yellow for green etc...thanks again man.
Sorry for not responding earlier, but I somehow missed your post. There were 4 (I think) of the larger ones and a three or so of the smaller ones for illumination. As I understand 1999 and up are all T5's.
I tried to do this to my f150, I bought the good blue led lights and. It's not even that bright? I even put them in correct, there very dim? Somebody please help?

Yes, I have since learned that the 99-02 models do not use the larger bulbs, but the cluster removal procedure is the same. . Here is a terrific site that I use to see which bulbs work with a specific application. www.modifiedlife.com/car-replacement-light-bulb-size-guides/
@@TwoKeysStudio i had the same problem but on mine they had 2 clear bars that surpose to reflect the bulb from the sides , which made the led light look dem when i powered them on. had to switch back to the ole schools.

We moved from Texas to Georgia a few years ago and my wife likes to keep a little bit of Texas with her. If we ever drive the Expedition back to Texas, no doubt we will get pulled over. Here in Georgia the smog checks are kept in a database, so no sticker is needed. Great catch, so far nobody has said anything.
I wish that I could make a good argument against that, but yes my first few videos could have been much better. When I shot this one I didn't have much in the way of video equipment and holding a camera while trying to take stuff apart kind of sucks. Anyway...thanks for watching.

Very true and also those 1998 F250's built on this chassis before the new F250's came out in 1999.
Cool last vid guy took off entire dash. This was less work. Thanks. My 98 f 150 has nothing but 1/2 speedometer lit. I need to replace many bulbs.
I have a 99 Exp. 5.4 I cannot get it smogged, the car will not clear the monitors, 4 or 5 blinking lights, 500 miles later I still cannot get it smogged, it will pass smog but not official until it clears the monitors, any ideas? PS I have 79K miles on it.
I actually have a video on that. I had to get my Thunderbird through the drive cycles to get it to pass. Here is a link to the video, I hope that it helps you. th-cam.com/video/CLk_2IF9EeE/w-d-xo.html
Yes, any T5 should work.
You're welcome and thanks for watching.
@@TwoKeysStudio awesome man, thanks 😁
I like it it looks cool. How long did it take you? How much were all the lights to replace.
Rocky the rock thanks! About an hour and a half including camera time. As I remember on price about $20 or less.
I was wondering if you ever changed the headlight switch light or the 4x4 dash light. And if you did what bulb did you use. Thank you.
I have not done that, but have seen others that have. As I recall those may have either soldered in lamps or possibly leds.
if i would to put white leds they will show up white right?
I have seen where others have put white LED's in and the panel shows as a whiter blue. There is actually a blue tint in the panel that causes the incandescent bulbs, which are more yellow, to show as green. If you remove the tint then they will be white.
Two Keys ohh ok thanks I will look into that
How would you get the green tint off without taking the face and \
needles off
I just picked up a 98 XLT and a few of my illumination bulbs are out and gonna go LED, my question is: Are all the bulbs the same size, including the warning lights?
I bought the led lights from the link but they didn’t fit my truck
Sorry to hear that.
mine is all t 5s it won't work on mine
After doing this my airbag light stays on dim. Any ideas
Did you swap the airbag light with an led? If so it could be the led.
@@TwoKeysStudio yes, I did change all gauge lights to led
Really good video! Beats the others ive seen, about to try this on 98 nav. What size leds did you use? t10 or t5?
Great question and thanks for the positive feedback. It required both T-5 and T-10 LED's. I have provided ebay links for the LED's that I used. There were 4 (I think) of the larger ones and a three or so of the smaller ones for illumination. The larger T-10's were for illumination only and the smaller T-5s are used for additional illumination and warning lights. I left the warning lights all as incandescent...at least for now.
Two Keys thanks man appreciate it!!
Jonathan Andrews thanks for the heads up on the headlight switch.
Jonathan Andrews how do you get the switch out the correct way? I have an 02 navigator i want to do this light conversion on.
how many of each led did you use ?
Sorry for not responding earlier, but I somehow missed your post. There were 4 (I think) of the larger ones and a three or so of the smaller ones for illumination. As I understand 1999 and up are all T5's.
I tried to do this to my f150, I bought the good blue led lights and. It's not even that bright? I even put them in correct, there very dim? Somebody please help?
Did you turn up the brightness for the dash lights and are they 12v leds?
Before you post 97-02 expedition do your homework. After watching this video i decide to order the leds in your link and take the whole dash part just to find you my 01 expedition cluster is different from yours the T10s wont fit and the lights on the T5s arent strong enough to illuminate properly
My odometer was different i couldnt change my speedo lights
how did u do the climate control?so they look the same?
I didn't do those lights, but have seen the same process for those in other videos and they do look the same.
Isn’t it a like to bright??
The brightness can be adjusted using the instrument panel light adjustment.
You did not spicificly say how many of which size bulbs are needed. This is important
when buying them.
That was a miss on my part. I think there were three of the larger bulbs and six of the smaller ones. The bulbs that I purchased came in packages of 10.
194
99s bulbs are alot smaller
Bro ur inspection sticker lol
We moved from Texas to Georgia a few years ago and my wife likes to keep a little bit of Texas with her. If we ever drive the Expedition back to Texas, no doubt we will get pulled over. Here in Georgia the smog checks are kept in a database, so no sticker is needed.
Great catch, so far nobody has said anything.
I put those on my truck and I didn't like them! I'm going to go back to the original Green ones.....
Was it too bright?
The brightness is still adjustable through the factory switch. I am guessing that he just didn't like the color???
Just buy green leds
It looks purple
1997 to 2003...not 2002. I know, minor mistake, just thought I would say it. 😂
Not a mistake 1997-2002 for the Expedition and 1997-2003 for the F150. F150 didn't get the new body style until 2004.
@@TwoKeysStudio ah, you're right. I was thinking of my 03 F150, my bad. 😂
Liked the video but dang dude, you move the camera like a person with Parkinsons and can't focus worth a crap. But...thanks I guess.
I wish that I could make a good argument against that, but yes my first few videos could have been much better. When I shot this one I didn't have much in the way of video equipment and holding a camera while trying to take stuff apart kind of sucks. Anyway...thanks for watching.
Too much work..my dash lights are fine the way they are!!
Jeff T I had a couple of bulbs out so I thought I'd try something different since it had to come out anyway.
Too much work??? Try dropping your whole dash to change out your heater core!
So far I have not had that pleasure, but have seen some pictures of the process. Doesn't look like much fun.
@@TwoKeysStudio if you ever have to change one look for a guy on you tube named jake payne.
@@commanderstud2417 heater core on a 2004 dodge dakota....it cant be any worse than removing the drain pan on 2003 accord or a 2003 chevy uplander-- the subframe has to be lowered to get enough space to remove it
