Thank you! Very good review! I bought the FlySky FS-i6 five years ago for my first radio. I planned on upgrading if I stayed with the RC hobby. Installed the 10 channel firmware and haven't bought another radio. I can't find a compelling reason to spend more money yet. This little FS-i6 flies all 20 of the airplanes in my hanger. I'll come back and watch this again if I ever change my mind.

Hi Andrew. Now you've done a comparison of radios, it's time to compare receivers. I currently fly Spektrum (DX9) but now I'm getting into flight-controllers, I'm encountering two problems with that radio: One, I'm running short of channels to utilise the programmable features on the FC and two, I can't find any inexpensive DSMX receivers (or Spektrum models for that matter) that have a serial output. (SRXL, in Spektrumese.) Cheers!

For me FlySky is my fpv and flight controller radio.FlySky also has a wide range of very affordable and long-range receivers. Spectrum is for my warbirds and line-of-sight flying. Easy to set up and voice can be applied to all the switches. My open text radio got corrupted firmware and is a paperweight that I've never managed to fix.

It really is a shame that FlySky has made toy looking transmitters in the past. The protocol has always been superior to FrSky. For 35 USD you get a transmitter capable of 4Km range and Crossfire level latency right out of the box. You don't have to worry about inverted/non-inverted with iBus. With custom firmware you have 10 channels, complete telemetry, and many additional settings on a transmitter that kids, and small adults, can handle easily. I have a Q X7 now as my main controller, but for those of us who grew up with cheap FlySky, we scratch our heads when the FrSky fanboys talk about failsafe. What is this failsafe you speak of?!? LOL

    • @k1ortia

Couldn't agree more. I started out with the Flysky fs-i6, then got an i6x..for the money there is nothing on the planet that can beat it..Fact! its got the lowest latency going and is cheap as hell. I still use mine in both various quads and wings. Yes the quality is not up there with the big boys...but? Can anyone match it for its functions vs price? No they cant.

  • @Thizlamic
    @Thizlamic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My Flysky i6x is my go to at the moment. Its cheap, I did an antenna mod and it now has two three position switches (I fried my first I6x trying out Li Po's lol). I'm waiting on my signal booster to arrive for more range but for the type of flying I do its perfect. Maybe I'll get Jumper once the finances stabilize. LOL GREAT VIDEO!

I am a pinch flyer for helis. I got my first OpenTx radio few months ago X9 lite. It took me about 2 days to learn it coming from Spektrum and Futaba. Ergonomically had to get use to the gimbals spacing ( space between the gimbals sticks) being much narrower. I am thinking of getting either X9D or the QX7 for wider gimbal space. Don't have any examples to try out in person.

I’m a big fan of the QX7 maybe because it was first OpenTX radio, been using mine for over 3 years and still love it. FrSky has annoyed me with the whole ACCESS debacle and R9 issues but it’s been a workhorse for over 3 years and I still love it.
OpenTX has a ton of features but there’s plenty of tutorials online for setting up the things we generally want to do with our planes and mini quads, it can be daunting though I agree.

Speaking of the OpenTX steep learning curve, how about some Newton Airlines OpenTX Tips & Tricks? I find I do initial model setup on the computer and then making some additional programming, like Expo, on the radio itself. I then keep all my models in a handy folder. It also makes swapping different models in and out of the radio if wanted. Great video!

I am going to be getting a TX16S to replace my old DX7 though.. mainly for its outstanding value and being multi protocol. My X9D+ may or may not be retired to spare duties. I'll have to wait and see how well the TX16S performs over the long term to see if it earns it..

    Good stuff Andrew,
I went for the Paladin - going from FrSky 2.4Ghz module in a Turnigy Er9X - skipping the QX7 and straight to the big gun...Haven't flown with it yet - got it a bit over a week ago - Using it to fly Xplane at the moment during Lockdown :)
However - a lot of programming I have done with it for a new Fixed wing UAV I am building I think I have everything 100% as I like it via iNav and Matek F765.
I initially programmed the side sliders for the Camera gimbal, but find that the detent is not fluid enough, so programmed a set of Logic Conditions within iNav to enable that when one of the Switches is flicked it changes the Left stick for Pitch and Yaw into a Gimbal control - making super smooth operation. Still yet to test it in flight, but should be very quick and easy to flick back to Flight controls if needed, the Side slider is still enabled as general manual control, Also hoping that when in a Navigation pattern it will maintain flight regardless of the Logic conditions.
Something from my perspective - for those forgoing the Paladin due to not having Open Firmware - is that if you are using a Fully programmable flight controller, the OS of the Remote is potentially almost irrelevant for a lot of operations and features, for instance I found that no matter what the setup is on the Paladin, 99% of the work is done by the Flight Controller anyway, including the Mixing, Logic Conditions, etc. So really all I have essentially done is pass ALL the switches, knobs, gimbals down from the Transmitter to the Receiver via Sbus, and got the FC to do the rest.
SO where Transmitter OS' would come more into play I think would be maybe for PID and tuning once everything is already programmed, as well is if NOT using a Flight Controller on a Fixed wing, or maybe wanting certain channels to go Direct to a Servo or Relay and not via the Flight Controller (maybe for failsafe or emergency parachute if FC was on the fritz! ) This of course may be quite different for a lot of people...

The paladins physical features and o.s are very very similar to the flysky i10, a very easy radio to setup using the colour touchscreen and graphical interface, just hope they release more firmware updates for the paladin than they did for the i10 as the stopped as soon as they fixed known bugs and went interested in further development which is a shame because the i10 spanks all other flysky radios with the exception of the paladin but could have been even better than it was

I started with the original 9X. Taranis Q X7 is a step up if you can afford it.

I've had a different experience with radio's, my first was a hk 6ch one model Tx, it was ultra reliable but my model numbers increased past 6 and it became a hassle re maidening each plane, so I went for a Turnigy 9x, another great radio again I ran out of model numbers, so I got a 9xr which held 30 model memory with a flysky module in it excellent Tx, Then I bought a 9xr-pro and put the same flysky module in it, it was great also with vocalising models as you select them, when the qx-7 came out the 60 model memory got me hooked! so I purchased the qx-7 which I currently use, it has hall gimbals fitted because my aileron stick was getting sloppy?? I've since added a 4 in 1 module to the Taranis qx-7 which is my daily, the 9xr-pro is another Tx I really liked I updated it's firmware to the same as the qx-7 with 60 model memory but rarely use it now, unnoteworthy Tx's I've had a Walkera (heli's) and a IrangeX multi protocol (feels like a toy) not recommended ..
my list: HK tx, Turnigy 9x, Turnigy 9xr, Turnigy 9xr-pro, Taranis QX-7 as my current tx,
    Great vid as always Andrew,

If you do upgrade to 10 ch or 14 ch you'll need the USB cable to connect the Tx to your PC >>> www.banggood.com/FlySky-Data-Cable-USB-Download-Line-For-FS-i6-FS-T6-Transmitter-Firmware-Update-p-982289.html?cur_warehouse=CN&rmmds=buy
One thing to keep in mind is there are a few mod code options out there, the bojangles one is probably the most common imo. I avoided going to 14 channels on my i6 cause to really use 14 channels you really should add the additional Tx switch (there is another mod on bojangles code site for this) but you will find you'll have to use combinations of switches and knob positions to effectively use all the available channels, which you program into the i6 radio. Keeping things down to 10 channels kept thing simple and really if you need more than 10 channels then having a better radio with dedicated switches is probably a better approach unless youre good at setting up switch combos you can remember.

Best maybe if you're not into anything detailed or interesting but just basic RC. If you want to make unique builds and really understand what you're doing and get the most out of the hobby, there are far cheaper and more capable options than anything from Spektrum. I have a Spektrum DX6i from 6 years ago, a great radio for its time but competition has destroyed Spektrum in the current market.

Spektrum is the most user friendly and feel better than all of these radios in my opinion of course. Would have liked to see it on the bench as part of your option. These radios all require upgrades and programming to get the most out of them. Again this is my opinion and doesn't matter. ;)

I fly fpv on everything and as I said it's my opinion Spektrum is hands down the best user friendly radio and feels better than any of these radios in my "option". For drones they maybe better for some people because of the receivers being smaller for a little longer than Spektrum had available but that's changed as well. I own each one of these radios and more so I've had a chance to compare them and again in my opinion Spektrum is much better all around.
