      A lot of it surely must have been history, literature, art and of course mathematics and science. Consider that a lot what we know about the romans comes from a volume of books called "Ab urbe condita libri" and it had 142 volumes that dealt with the beginning of Rome all the way to the reign of the 1st roman emperor. Today only like 30 or so volumes survive.

    These values still exist among many muslims still today. It has happened on some occasions when I told that im studying or teaching philosophy, the reaction I receive from some muslims is the following: Isnt philosophy haram (forbidden)? Sad to see and hear. The Quran continously encourages people to think for themselves, search for knowledge and develop intellectually and morally.

    Even though Mongols invaded and occupied Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey and so on, they imposed nothing on the peoples whom they came to rule over. Instead the Mongol rulers and Mongol settlers assimilated into the Arabic/Iranic/Turkic Islamic society, adopted the language, religion and culture, and their descendants took Arabic/Iranic/Turkic names.

    • @hp5203

      Salam Khan the Muslims have destroyed much over the world. This was Mongols over Arabs (who happened to be Muslim). In general, where most new conquerors added edifices and roads and public works, Alexander left libraries behind, the British built ports and canals, the Muslims left destroyed libraries, palaces, temples, and entire settlements. They looted, pillaged, killed, plundered, denuded, destroyed, and left barren ancient and irreplaceable peoples. From Tariq ibn-Ziyad to Salah din; Nader Shah to Timor Lane, their pride was the destruction of more civilized cultures and the loot of more successful traders.

    Excellent video. And that quote at the end really is timeless. Science and reason are often in danger of being held hostage by faith and dogmatism. And while a society can achieve great things (Ancient Rome, Islam during its Golden Age, America in the Gilded Age) there is that specter in the background, ready to leap forth and seize the nation's mind and spirit.

    There is a lesson to be learned here for those not blinded by hate and fear. Islam to this day is like an abused child, steeped in ignorance and aggression, itching to lash out. It still has not recovered from the mongols, and this is not something to be thankful for. Anyone who laments the lack of a renaissance or enlightenment within Islam needs to consider this story.

    • @laustudie
      @laustudie 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      They are taking their time, the mongolian invasion happened centuries ago. Japan and Germany were both utterly destroyed after that second world war, yet right now Germany is by far the strongest country in the EU. I think Shirvan is right when he says it is to easy to blame it all on the mongols.

    • @deridethetide2632
      @deridethetide2632 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I'm not saying that it can all be blamed on the mongols, the reaction of the Islamic world to their conquest is just as key. But it should be noted that Japan and Germany were not nearly as "utterly destroyed" culturally as the Islamic world, they were also treated quite generously by the allies after they had surrendered and did not retreat into isolation. The differences are stark in these two scenarios.

    • @VoidOfDarkness9
      @VoidOfDarkness9 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jacob's Ladder i'll give you equivalent. Look at Communism see how much it destroyed in term of Culturally. And see now how much it take to recover. If there is only think to blame it is your own religion and yourselfs.

    • @larrysherk
      @larrysherk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wonderful to read something thoughtful, humane, and compassionate on this subject. Thanks! In another generation, I think we can all treat each other that way.

    • @deridethetide2632
      @deridethetide2632 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Misheel I agree that the Islamic world and its leaders are also very much to blame, I have acknowledged this already. I don't think Communism did as much to destroy culture though. The Mongols killed pretty much everyone in the main cultural centers of the region and then set the cities to the torch. Communists killed plenty of people, but didn't go quite this far.
      Thanks Larry, but I don't think people will grow out of tribalism anytime soon. I am not really trying to make excuses for Islam here either. If a murderer was abused as a child it doesn't absolve him of his crimes, but it does put things in perspective.
      And bm3racer, I disagree. The Ottomans were able to slow the decline, but they were only able to do this by playing all the volatile elements against one another in order to maintain control. This was an effective method for a while, but it ultimately exacerbated the problem when the central power dissipated.

    Faith is not against science. What is against it is State Religion as it evolved both in Christianity and Islan. State religion is enforced by force and see individual or small groups thought as a threat. I can't talk for Islan but I assure you that State Roman Catholicism is not Christianity.

    • @Hyperventilacion

      Great point, I learned that when I started to study history, even though before I though that religion was "the root of all evil", but it is certainly more complex than that, and it's more related to power and corruption that to religion itself, but damn, religion is such a good tool for blind followers, politics and demagoguery; it's a shame that it's used that way.

      Exactly its not the principles of faith , rather who implements them in which way? For example there is no stoning to death in the Quran , yet people disregard the Quran and look to create their own proof by fabricating fake hadith's and establishing their claim to do so based on the hadith! It is man that distorts faith or religion , all we have to do is read and look at history focus on the basics first n foremost!

    In only fifty years South Korea rose from the ashes like a phoenix to become one of the earths most advanced nations. Look at Turkey until recently, they did fairly well to a certain extent. The difference between the developed world and between primitives is the way how they treat women and minorities, how they handle free trade, the school and the social system. Many factors contribute to a well doing nation. The explanations by these great video series aren't enough to fully answer the question why islamic nations do so badly in comparison.

    Those who yearn for the past and the greatness that was, just know that nothing lasts forever. No entity can maintain the pinnacle of anything for very long. A golden age is just that, one golden age.
    Have heart that Islam produced amazing thinkers and thinking during its Golden Age. Without the great contributions made to rationalism, the Age of Enlightenment and the development of Science/Calculus would never have occurred in Europe.
    Have hope that in the future the way of rationalism will spread throughout the world, and no religion or ethnic group will be able to ignore the inevitable.

    Interesting part about the (physical) destruction of scientific institutions and literature begins at 9:20, later than also about intellectual. Lives nearly up to the first part of the series, meaning it talks actually about science and not only about political history!

    I wonder why Shirvan did not mention that when the Arabs conquered Iran they burnt all the Sasanid libraries and destroyed Jondishapour university but when it came to Mongols he did mention it. A bit dishonest.

    St. Thomas Aquinas rejected Averroes which held that there is a double truth, that of philosophy and that of theology. He was a follower of Aristotle to the extent that Aristotelian didn't contradict Catholic teaching. The fact is that he didn't trust the translations of Aristotle via Arabic translations, and he had a Dominican Friar translate Aristotle directly from Greek.

    As our use of science, technology, rationalism and materialism now threaten to destroy the world in may ways, at least on the ecological level, and is helping us all degenerate as cultures and societies and happy people on the more personal level, one is left to wonder if Al Ghazali maybe had a point, even if his Platonism did spell the end of the Islamic Golden Age.

    great work! really appreciate your reports.
    that said it sounded at the end of this video as if faith and science are contradictory. in Quranic Arabic because of the way Arabic is built, there isn't one word for science. Belief on the other hand is generally translated as "iman" where in fact it is always associated with the word "bi" , meaning " a secured and trusted way in obtaining .. from .. ".
    Trust is more of a probabilistic approach, and depends heavily on one's perspectives and perception.

    • @scarfaceyam145
      @scarfaceyam145 ปีที่แล้ว

      ....this term IMAN must needs take COGNITION

      ...also,he cannot be persecuted for reporting Islamic history as it actually worked out for the Muslims.The muslims did prefer the religious sciences above the more rational/natural sciences as neatly described by that daring historian,al-Masudi,when asked what the reason for the decline of Rome and Greece were.
      Keep up the good work Caspianreport

    Alot of roman and greek texts survived not only because of Arabs but also because of being stored in Byzantium. Codex Justinianus, which forms the basis of most roman civil law in the world is a good example.

    i am shocked how many ignorants post their rants about islam while they know nothing about Arabic grammar . Quran was written in Arabic for a reason. the crappy translations to other languages caused the misconceptions. Arabic as a language is complex and one word can have multiple meanings that are completely different. you can never find a person who studied Arabic grammar insults Quran. the book itself is masterpiece grammatically . till now, no one could solve it’s complexity.

    Mu'tazilism movement was started by Wasil ibn Ata, a student of Abd-Allah ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah, the grandson of Ali ibn Abi Talib. So in fact, the Mu'tazilah had learned from an Alid tutor and Mu'tazilism was not so much incorporated into Shi'a Islam but in actual fact, since the intellectual root of both was the same, viz. Ali Ibn Abi Talib and his thoughts passed onto his descendents one of whom was the tutor of Wasil ibn' Aata the founder of the movement.

    Actually. .the demise of Islamic golden age came from within. When a Democratic system as Khilafa Rashida was removed.
    The Umayyad and Abbasid kingdoms were only profiting of what was achieved during The prophet Muhammad (pbuh) & Rashidun Era .
