      Yes. It is really funny that it really is that simple. But yeah, I hear ya, I am merely saying that if you learn the rules, then you can later play with them... And how I want that Great Hands for a Lifetime book...

    I had the opportunity to take snare drum lessons with John for a semester at North Texas in the 80s. As a sax player I was allowed to take percussion lessons in place of woodwinds class. John was an excellent teacher and pushed me to be as good as I could be. It was all about rudiments, confidence, and musicality. Glad to see him here on TH-cam.

    This is a great lesson because it addresses the building blocks we use to create a beat or a fill. It's not trying to copy a fancy fill or something someone else improvised.
    The creative process is all ours.
    Once again nailed it guys!
    Thank you so much..

    four types of paradiddles:
    standard = RLRR LRLL
    inverted = RLLR LRRL (named inwards for the sake of memorizing the list)
    reverse = RRLR LLRL
    outwards = RLRL LRLR
    it's a permutation: your sticking order is still the same only you are starting on a different note each time.
    Rlrr lrll rllR lrrl rrlr llRl rlrl lRlr with the captialized R being the start of the standard paradiddle.

    This is SO GOOD. Every young drummer, or ANY drummers who don't have their rudiments together should really study this. Hell, drummer who DO have their rudiments in order should check this out. This the sort of foundational learning that will provide techniques, ideas, and musicality your entire life. Man, I wish I would have had access to this material when I was a kid. Incredible.

    Here's ancient for ya. When I started playing, there were 13 rudiments. Now they say there are upwards of 40. The only problem with that is, these 27 new "rudiments" are combinations of the original 13. Rudiment means basic, or fundamental. So when you combine rudiments, you no longer have a basic rudiment, you have combined rudiments. An example is a flamaque, which is the combination of a flam with a ratamaque. This is no longer a rudiment, it is a combination. Same with a flamadiddle, or flam paradiddle. It's a paradiddle that starts with a flam instead of a single stroke. hell, a paradiddle is a combination of 2 sigle strokes combined with a double stroke. That is where ALL drumming comes from. Combining rudiments into patterns that are pleaseing and fit the rest of the music.

    • @anga7292
      @anga7292 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1) Nard 13 didn't include the single stroke roll.
      2) Some of the 13 rudiments were combinations, not rudiments, by your standards (for example: six stroke roll, seven stroke roll, flam accent, FLAM PARADIDDLE...yes, it was one of the 13 rudiments !!!).
      4) Just out of curiosity, when did you start playing ? I'm asking because, as far as I know, the rudiments were already 26 by the mid 1930's.

    To all drummers, listen to everything Wooten says about the four strokes. This is the most important thing you will ever learn about stick control. You might be bored because he isn't trying to show off, but he is one of the best teachers in the world. He is also one the most efficient players ever.

Need work on my Swiss army triplets and single flam mills (just learned what mills are) but I know I'm gonna get that last exercise soon. Thanks Dr. Throwdown!

Even though I could play pretty complex syncopated beats, I do not know any of the rudiments and can barely play a double stroke roll. So I Have a lot of work to do now to get better...

    YES! Music! NOT rudiments. So many of todays drummers are all technique and rudimentary knowledge but the music is boring and completely unmemorable. I could name so many overrated and hyped up youtube drummers like Luke and Alex, who just shred and focus on the complexity of drumming, but NOT the music. Drumming now has become a polyrhythm sport. There is no emphasis on writing or feeling. Which is why no matter how "technically" proficient todays drummers, most are completely unmemorable. Like gospel drummers, they are a dime a dozen, one you hear one you hear them all. Its like people took the music out of music. Its all show.

    • @swifftouch
      @swifftouch 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you believe that once you've heard one gospel drummer you've heard them all, you don't know what you're talking about. Gospel is a compilation of all genres in one, they play according to what is appropriate at a certain time and there's a high level of creativity and personality within the context...why because they are forced to listen and observe through their experiences and their experimental processes from SERVICE....
      The rudiments and technique become important when one encounters the GRACE element...There's levels to it.....I challenge you to listen to a lot of 3/4 gospel...You'll find that gospel is the foundation to many of the other genre's players. especially your great jazz players, take away their gospel element, they will be very bland. Gospel has been the key ingredient that set the great drummers i've come across from the others. Took me many of my early years to find this out.
      Many of those who emphasize on writing fall short greatly when it comes to feeling, as they are very restricted, and a little distracted. writing is good for practice and execution of a strict interpretation.

      Dawson The Noble Devin Townsend does clean vocals and its in top 3# best metal vocalists. Try again. Im not a elitist but I have standards. You guys would defend Travis Barker over Todd Sucherman lol. When you grow up, try to find anyone playing those drummers songs I mentioned in 5-10 years. Wont happen.

    Could somebody explain what he means by "articulation" at 12:08? It seems to relate to the fact that a rhythm naturally sounds subtly different when played with different stickings. But I thought we were supposed to try to get both limbs to sound the same.

      i think he means the accent is naturally altered depending on where the diddle is mostly. itll just happen naturally

    Great video as usual Drumeo...I'm trying to find John Wooton on some recordings but having a bit of trouble. What groups has he played with so I can check out some of his live work? Thanks!
