Homeless in Austin Fighting Mental Illness after Spending Most of His Life in Prison

  • John has lived on the streets of Austin homeless for close to four years. He tries to do things differently by keeping to himself and staying away from common areas.
John spent most of his life locked up in prison. John shared that he has spent more time in prison than he has spent on the streets. Before you judge John, whatever he did, he has done his time and has been released. Our criminal justice system does almost nothing to help ex-convicts get back into society. Many end up on the streets homeless, and as taxpayers, you pay for their homelessness.
John suffers from mental illness and other health issues. He says he is working with good case managers and is on a list to be housed soon. John believes that how people are selected for housing is obsolete and needs to be redone. His basis for this is the fact that homeless people can be on a housing list for years and never get into housing. John is a smart man.
John went on to give more suggestions on homeless services and case management. He believes and I agree that some people need help transitioning from a life of prison and then homelessness into housing.
At the end, John invited me to visit his new apartment when he gets housing. Just so happens I will be in Austin for SXSW early next year and hope to visit John in his castle!

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

But I’m scared of not being able to get on my feet enough to ever get out of this situation and then eventually ending up without a vehicle.

i truly feel badly for every homeless person. But certain ones break my heart. John is one of them. He seems like he just needs some support and a chance. Also I too have dental issues and his constant moving of his mouth is something I do too because of discomfort and extracted teeth. I was in pain watching his mouth. I wish a dentist in Austin would help him out. And to top it off, his waering a USA hat was so cruelly ironic. Our country has abandoned its most vulnerable people.

So, in jail for being a good businessman.

Being unable to find a job after incarceration is part of a bigger problem. Releasing an individual from prison and expecting them to magically fall into step with everyday society and "normal" life is simply unrealistic. In the U.S., prisoners are rarely rehabilitated, most of those relased are quickly churned back through the prison system and this sad cycle makes certain entities huge amounts of money.

I foster care feral cats and wild dogs and it's a good analogy because these sweet smart creatures never had a "home" but with gentle guidance and lots of love they turn out fabulous and people are animals too. For those who are more concerned with the animals on the street know this, until we start treating people with compassion , animals will never be treated better so if you feel for the animals then feel for the human animals too.

These are NOT stories about housing. These are stories of our DIVORCE LAWS. I am also a retired veteran who because of these ridiculous domestic violence laws went from a 3000sqft home to being homeless in winter with ZERO evidence. I had no ID, no wallet, no shoes, and no medicine, which after a week on the streets led to a nervous breakdown - all because of a false abuse charge because my ex wife was having an affair. She moved the new guy into my house that I paid every mortgage payment on only a few weeks after I was tossed out. This also happens to homeless women whose exes abused the court system to make them look unstable.

  • @subzero3116

I hope for the best for this guy, I hope he finds his way. That’s why it’s important to follow the rules in life, don’t break the law, don’t get involved with drugs, and stay humble. Because if you get into trouble for whatever reason, like rape, murder, or any of those crimes that will keep you locked up and you wind up spending most of your life in prison, then it is going to be very hard to try to get your life in order once you get out. But all of that could of been avoided if you just didn’t commit that crime, and the pain that you caused your victim and their family if they are alive is a travesty in itself.

And there needs to be some different kind of housing for people with mental issues. Because once housed they have a hard time keeping it. Even paying normal bills on time is a challenge.
