15th May 2021 - Magpie attack thwarted! - Blue tit nest box live camera highlights

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 12 ธ.ค. 2024
- We started the day with five chicks and at the time of writing we ended the day with five chicks so that's somewhat of a relief. The day was not without drama though. Unfortunately, a magpie has taken an interest in the nest box and was probably looking to snack on our chicks. As you'll see in the video (6:37) it gave them a hell of a fright. The hole is too small for a large bird such as a magpie and some of you may remember that it has a piece of metal protecting the hole so that bigger birds cannot peck their way in.
There's been a selection of insects brought in today and the parents seem to think that the chicks are ready for bigger food if their choices are anything to go by. Some of these are a bit on the too large side though.
More tomorrow...

The whole size doesn’t matter. Predatory birds just peck to make it bigger. It’s a metal plate around the hole that is needed.
Well I guess there's a reason for having small entry holes to a bird house.
So much reason
I think most houses made now are best to have a metal plate installed on the outside as well at the same size.
Would prevent most birds from using their beaks to make it bigger to get into the nests.
@@AinrehteaDalnalirtu - But metal might have more dangerous sharp edges. I think, all in all, that wood is best.
@@Yngvarfo Usually the metal plates are buffed and anodized (I have aluminium ones on my birdhouses) they are perfectly smooth and silky. I have seen crows pecking and trying to make the hole bigger, but failing then they give up. (I have chickadees nesting in them and sometimes bats too).
@@Yngvarfo sure metal..when weather get hot we got half cook bird in the bird house 😅
Babies thought the scratching was dad at the door, and mom squashed everyone down: Get down, DOWN KEVIN that's the devil at the door!

@@zhimondcoleman4419 I think she tried to keep her chicks where they are. As soon as the chicks hear some noise around, they pop up their head to get food. And the mother force them to keep still. I saw a magpie coming to a nest box and waiting head in front of the hole that a chick shows up, ready to take them.
The mum knew beforehand: as soon as the male went away, he saw the magpie and warn his family with an alarm call.
The previous video shows the outside entrance hole has a metal casing.

So kind of you to provide refuge for these birds. They are under constant predation from feral and domestic cats. I hope this shelter is used for years to come so that these brave little guys can enjoy a secure family environment and perpetuation of their species.
Cats being a problem for birds is why I keep my cat indoors always. He's actually a feral I got from around my work, neutered then took home. Very loving now and no longer a threat to birds
@@Flarflenugen Thank you for doing your part!! All the little critters appreciate it
If you watch the video where the nest was built and first egg laid, you'll see that the outside of the nest box has a piece of metal with a hole in it surrounding the entry/exit hole to the nest box. That hole isn't every getting bigger, no matter how persistent a predator may be.
Couldn't have been said any better

Those parents look like they have their beaks full caring for five hatchlings.
Two ended up making it through the harsh process of fledglings :)
@@02Benji Good to know. Hope all the babies are doing well....Oh they would be full adults by now wouldn't they.
It must be terrifying just seeing that come through your door way. But it’s still fascinating how magpies locate bird nests by seeing where the parents go in and out. Such clever birds
i have a nestbox and the bluetits always perch somewhere near the box and check that they are not being watched before entering, the chicks chirping gives the game away
Magpie looks like it can't even fit it's beak in, good thing they have the box
but it is not hard
Its all about every Dad and mom responsibility to take care of their child.
It funny how animals understand that but humans can’t 🥲
@@ChefGMoney578 Thats not funny and not true. Almost all humans take really good care of their offspring. And some birds will forsaken theirs for stupid reasons.

Love how Mum covered them and kept them calm. Dads cool too - busy! Magpies are a big threat to our small songbirds!!
Eggs and nestlings make up a tiny portion of a magpies overall diet and according to studies, their mobbing and chasing of larger predators like Merlin's and Hawks actually helps the songbird population more than they hurt them. Magpies (and Crows)are misunderstood. We have been trained to hate them for no good reason at all.
This has inspired me to put up some birdhouses for the small finches in my yard.
There are so many crows, ravens, hawks, and owls that there has been fewer small birds in my area.
I really love watching the small birds enjoying my garden. ❤️
Make sure to put a metal plate around hole so squirrels won't try to get the eggs and baby birds.
Don't forget the worst predator, the cat!
@@nightstalker5282 why metal plate?
Or just feed the magpies.
I buy simple tins of hot dog sausages, slice them up and put them out for the magpies.
This way they leave all the blackbirds, tits, sparrows etc alone.
Not even bothered :)
@@seanredmond3112 squirrels are far worse than cats. Cats are easy to deter if you create a cat proof nest box. There’s tutorials on how to do it ;)
Seriously,, wow!!!! Priceless footage
Great thing that the entry hole is small enough to keep larger predatory birds out, thoughtful nest box designs keep the baby birds safe and secure. :-)
I was going to say the same thing. But Brock 1 beat me to it.
@@brockbaby lmao brock 1, so you're brock 2 i guess? 😂😂😂
Humans have been doing this for centuries...15th and 16th century Turks would build birdhouses for sparrows and swallows out of long-necked ceramic jars with small openings to prevent larger birds and other predators from reaching the chicks. The native Americans were also creating birdhouses out of paper birch (white birch) for small birds with tiny openings.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one... I was watching to see if they fed everyone the whole time... it was more tense then the predator bird saying hey lol
IKR! I can’t help it; I get upset when one passes away. I know, I know, it’s nature, but dammit, it’s hard to see and handle😔

I never knew dads feed them too!!! That’s so sweet
You have ig?
Both parents work together to provide food for their children of course :)
U Wana feed me 😜
Some male birds do ALL the work, such as the jacanas. Interestingly, the males get to choose who to mate with and the females compete over the males.
And take out the poop sacks too!
;_; momma was so scared she hid her head! This is why the size of the hole needs to be just rigth so predators don't get in. Also metal plate is good tgo prevent squirrels.
squirrels eat birds?
@@notchedbandit Squirrels can eat eggs and chicks if the opportunity presents itself.
Was about to ask you the logistics of the metal plate when I realised i live in australia without squirrels 😂😂😂
@@EmmaAppleBerry Yeah they eat babies and eggs and they can chew the wooden hole bigger until they fit inside, that is why metal plate is necessary on these smaller wooden bird boxes.
I am wondering...what if I put a metal pipe , not so long, at the entrance? In this way not the squirrel nor any predators beak/claw can even reach the nest "room"
Those babies poppin up are so adorable! Thanks for posting.

You built a great birdhouse for them, it kept them nice and safe and kept larger birds out.
I find it interesting how they manage the babie's poop.
Its something thats easily forgotten, but if you think about it, evolution and instinct had to figure out baby waste management in animals that have nesrs or burroughs to raise their babies in.
Its why cat and puppie babies need stimulation to poop.
And here with birds, it seems, they poop in a specific way and their poop has a consistency that allows that parent to grab it and take it out of the nest.
