How to install a Digital Stepper Motor fuel pressure gauge by Autometer, and fix my oil gauge line!

- It's time to change out my Mechanical Fuel Pressure gauge, because it should NEVER be installed inside your cabin. So, we're going upgrade to a Digital Stepper Motor version, AND re-purpose the old Mechanical Fuel Pressure line to be used as the new Oil Pressure Line. The reason is the old oil pressure capillary tube is plastic, which can break or melt causing a royal mess. I recently installed a FiTech Fuel Injection system, and I'd like an easy way to determine if I have adequate fuel pressure, hence the gauge. In the prior two Mechanical gauge episode's we found a gauge location, installed a Mechanical Water Temperature gauge, and a mechanical Oil Pressure gauge.
In this episode, "How to install a Digital Stepper Motor fuel pressure gauge by Autometer, and fix my oil gauge line!", we review the three different types of gauges (Mechanical, Air Core, and Digital Stepper Motor with Solid state sending unit) While this is applicable to any engine, this particular video will show the back up pressure port on a Pontiac 400. You can use a depinning tool to carefully remove the wires from a connector. This can be handy when you want to minimize the size of the hole you drill to pass through a wiring harness. Just be sure to take notes and pictures of the wire arrangement before disassembly.

I think the bezel looks fine. I would not change it. One's eye is pulled toward the guage needle generally and does not notice the bezel distinction. Nice work!

In the days prior to plastic tubing, we used to use soft copper refrigerant tubing for our mechanical oil pressure gauges.
Yup, Autometer sells that too... but, bend it too much and it'll break. The AN line is the way to go, in my opinion. :) Oh, and I sent the gauge back to get the matching chrome bezel... it was a whopping $25. How cool is that? Thanks!

Hi Mike, amazing GTO with an amazing story to go along with it. What steering wheel and cap setup do you have there? I have an old tired steering wheel in my 69 GTO and have been looking through all the options on the net. Also, what wheel and tire size you running? Did you make any modifications to make them fit? I think those wheels are US Mags U109 and they come in 17” and 18” i couldnt find bigger. Great job man, the car is bad ass.
Welcome to the channel! Great questions... yeah, my original Formula steering wheel was beyond repair... welp, I didn't want to spend $1200 having someone fix it. So, I bought a Grant Steering wheel. I don't know if they make mine anymore, but they have some good stuff. The tires are 295/30 - 20 and 255/35 - 19. With careful measuring you can go to 305 and 265, respectively, with ZERO or very little modification. (I slightly trimmed the inner fender lip on the rears) My wheels are US Mag Bandits, but they're custom 3 piece wheels they don't make anymore. The closet are their two piece version USMag US304's. You were looking at their low cost cast versions. Let me know how it goes!
Like your channel man, so where are u from? I'm actually in Hollywood, in between Ft Lauderdale and Miami. I'm gonna finally put my glow shift coolant temp, boost vacuum, wideband air fuel ratio, and black and blue digital tachometer/W LED in May and I got my 5 speed manual, put in and Limited slip differential, fidanza lightweight flywheel and new seats from the donor car, which look new, no rips, etc.

@@FastMonty Yeah, I saw your first time video dragging. I was thinking of upgrading my rear taillights like what u did on the GTO. Possibly also the LED with the blinkers, where the blinker light slides all the way across also, like the new cars.

Do you run a 100 micron coarse fuel filter on your car? And what brand fuel filter do you use?
Good question... I have an in tank pump, with a 100 micron filter, running to a FiTech 10 micron filter. If you're still carbureted 100 micron will work fine. Hope that helps!
Can a fuel gauge be put on 01 tahoe wired through instrument cluster
Hmmm, the gauge can be installed on any vehicle. But, I'm not sure if it'll fit in the existing cluster. Let us know how it works out.
@@FastMonty I just wanna run wire to the cluster instead of fuel pump so I won’t have to drop tank is their away I can hook the guage up without dropping my tank

@@2423aj Good question... I'm pretty sure you HAVE TO use the sending unit included with the gauge. Where you mount that sending unit is up to you... Ideally, I'd mount it as close to the point of use as possible, as I did on my Throttle Body. Let me know how it goes...
@@FastMonty really didn’t want to do the tank on 01 Tahoe to connect to sending unit. Is there another way to wire a fuel gage without connecting the fuel pump
