A Big Bear Fight at Hallo Bay | Hungry Brown Bears Fighting over Salmon

  • So we're photographing brown bears fishing for salmon, and this sow (female) catches a salmon. That draws the attention of a nearby large male bear, who chases after her. At this point I tell the group to back up because I also saw another male bear coming from the left and things could escalate.
The first male bear proceeds to fight the female and then steal her fish. He had just done this exct thing for the last two fish she caught.
Then the second large male comes in and the two boars get into it. That first initial charge is pretty intense.
    Enjoy the show.

I've seen some very nasty grizzly fights where one of them most definitely did not live for much longer after the fight was over.

Replying to several posts below on camera operator judgment with examples of perspective distortion:
@0:13 closer-than-actual background (cliffs) to subject (bear) due to combo of long lens and long distance from camera to subject; also compare heights of cliffs to bear, close tidal flats
@0:37 larger-than-actual close subject (human) to background (bear) due to extremely short distance from camera to subject and closer-than-actual background (bear) to subject (human) due to combo of long lens and long distance from camera to subject

The 2 are really the same species. Here in AK people call the coastal bears and bears across the Alaska Peninsula Brown bears, which is the species they belong to, and grizzly bears are usually referring to the interior bears that aren't so large, because they don't have the same rich salmon diet.

Technically, "grizzlies" is the colloquial name,@@Dr.Ian-Plect .. they're of the species, brown bears. Even the Kodiak brown bear is a brown bear.
FWIW, There are 3 subspecies of American brown bears, not 2. The ABC bears of SE Alaska are the 3rd subspecies.
