I really like how you always manage to make the less touristy area really appealing and how you always are very enthousiastic about everything, without overeacting and making it sound fake. You two really have a special relationship and find beauty in everything.

The shop with the robot vending machine is a great dagashiya (old school cheap candy store) and the statue Kyde high fived is Tora-san, hero of the beloved movie series "Otoko wa Tsuraiyo" Shibamata is associated with.

The zodiac seem to be ordered right to left, from rat to pig, which makes the mystery foxy one dog.

Shibamata is famous for the very popular Sowa Era movie Tora-san Series 『男はつらいよ=It is hard to be a man』. They made two movies a year, one for summer, one for New Year for 20 years from 1969-1989 until the lead actor died. (32:00 is the Tora-san Stature)
Kameari is famous for the very popular Manga series 『こちら葛飾区亀有公園前派出所=Here, Police station in front of Kameari Park in Katsushika Ward』published from 1976-2016. The longest comic series published. (0:22 are the Manga Charactors)
Most of Japanese people know the name Katsushika for that reason. Also Katsushika Hokusai was born this area in Edo Era.
Not as upper class but as working class area in history.

I loved the temple experience. I felt very comfortable with the isolation, the occasional sounds, bells and wind .. and the unique vending machine just added to the ambiance of the surroundings. This is hard to put into words but that "vending culture" in Japan, it fascinates me greatly, with so many interesting and surprising treasures all available via the machines. I can't help but ponder just how far that goes, I guess virtually anything and everything through vending. Cheers ....

@11:58 my best guess and most logical conclusion would be that the circular structure is a landing pad for helicopters. Quick transportation is probably crucial for both VIPs and high ranking prisoners.
Update: looked at Google map and it most definitely is a helicopter landing pad.

The prison blended in with the residential area is pretty nuts. I live not that far from a large prison Stateside, which has huge fenced-in areas like 20+ feet tall with barb wire and towers all around it, surrounded by roads you don’t drive down unless you live in a neighborhood more than walking distance away. It also doesn’t look as pretty, architecturally speaking. I wonder if the prison in Japan looks different because conditions are so different from US prisons.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Katsushika seems to have a lot of cool areas if you explore a bit. I always think of it as the home of Toro-san (aka that dude Kyde high-fived).That temple at night looked amazing; not creepy at all. I think I could watch that dancing lion machine for hours. The Menchi restaurant had a great atmosphere and looks worth checking out.

I was kind of waiting to see if you guys visit Shibamata. One of my first intro to Japan was the Tora San movies (among other usuals like Ozu, Mizoguchi, Kurosawa, Naruse films etc). The movies were crazy popular, even has a Guinness World Records association too.. Shibamata was home to Tora san, the protagonist of the series. The Taishakuten Temple was featured prominently in those too! It looks magical, want to visit it if I managed ever to visit Japan. Kyde high fiving Tora san was a lol moment. This was really fun for me. Thanks.

Engagement comment! Thoroughly enjoyed spooky Tokyo.
    Spooky Story time:
When I was in Tokyo I enjoyed taking very, very long walks around random off the track places so ended up in plenty of smaller neighbourhoods.
I ended up on a residential street near Sugamo, I walk pretty quietly in soft soled trainers and when rounding a corner came immediately upon an older gentlemen probably a foot shorter than me, I was almost on top of the guy and said "Sumimasen" out of reflex and started the guy something awful.
We had a little laugh and he gestured for me to carry on.
I think I was that poor guys personal little spooky spirit that day.

@9:30 ... didn't recognize it at 1st (thought it was an apartment complex or hospital), but once you got closer ( @9:48 ) i recognized it right away.
it's the same place that *Carlos Ghosn* (former *CEO* of *Nissan* & chairman/CEO of a bunch of other companies) was held & charged w/ financial misconduct a few years ago.
also, @12:00 ... not a _"satellite dish"_ . it's a helipad for helicopters. most government buildings in *Asia* have them, as do many high-rises.
random notes b/c y'all definitely need to go there when everything is open ...
    • @28:38 behind the bridge is an amazing 2 story wooden carved structure. i think y'all get there too late (they close around 4PM? 3PM?).
    [ 360 view of what it looks like inside ... *2ndFloor* : goo.gl/maps/o2FPbpBFgZM8kpJ57 *1st Floor* : goo.gl/maps/iPgJq1emHwqLkFAm9 ]
    • @28:45 that tree, w/ the support branches that stretch out in front of the temple, is a (nearly) 500 year old tree, & an official *Tokyo* landmark/monument.
    • @31:45 if you thought that was cool, you need to see the store it's attached too. it's an old-school 1980s candy/toy/retro-game store.
    • @32:00 that's *Tora-san* from the *_"Otoko wa Tsurai yo"_* film series. i think some of the sires was filmed in a few of those shops you passed. it holds the *Guinness World Record* for the longest-running movie series (starring a single actor) - there were like 50 sequels. you can find a more proper statue near *Shibamata Station* .

My guess for the “Tokyo detention house” was a Hospital... big windows doesn’t give me the idea of jail.
And my guess for the round thing on top was a helipad and google maps told me I was right.
Btw, the last bit of both doing a video in the slide is a cool idea for a video (a pain to edit I’ll guess), two points of view simultaneously.

That Temple seems worth a visit! :D Wonder if it's nicer at daytime or is it nicer in the spooky atmosphere at night?
