How to learn a language in the world of YouTube: Timeline myths

- It took me a while to figure out exactly what I wanted to say about this topic. I'm still not sure that I've nailed it. This video stems from my frustrations with trying to avoid comparing myself and my own language learning progress to other people's that I see on youtube or other social media. On one hand, I like short term language challenges because they can give you a massive amount of momentum. On the other hand, without a critical eye, they set some unrealistic expectations.

Whenever somebody says that they can learn language in three months I reflect on how much of the English language I am still unfamiliar with after speaking it from birth.
Having learned Chinese to pretty decent level, it is pretty clear to me that I am nowhere near a native speaker and if I want to get my Chinese ability close to that of a native speaker it will take me several more years.
it's kind of like with expertise. They talk about in any subject, if you don't know anything it seems like you could learn everything that needs to be learned very quickly but once you've learned a little bit you begin to see how much you truly don't know and then when you develop a higher level of skill you come to see that the mountain that you thought you saw before was merely a foothill of the truly enormous mountain behind it.
It's like learning anything else. Focus on the journey, not the destination. Compare yourself to your former self and nobody else. I've been studying Spanish for about 2 and a half years, and I'm nowhere near hyper polyglot gigachad level, but the longer I stick with it, more opportunities present themselves.

"Unverifiable language muscles" I like that, I was watching a video about two "polyglots" meeting and it was embarrasing because they kept saying "Hi, how are you? nice to meet you, what's your name?" in all of the languages they supposedly knew...
Seemed the only language they actually both knew really well was English... and in Chinese, the only other language I know, the one guy knew nothing and the guy who knew some wasn't what I would call "good"

Ive always tried to focus on hours as my guide to fluency as its a more tangible goal. Pretty sure at 1500h of a tier one language your going to be at a decent level. Up to you how long that takes you. Currently at 477h
Agreed! I feel like hours tend to be left out of people's stories.
This is so true, when I started learning my first language I came to youtube and it made me believe I could learn it in 3-6 months, so knowing myself I thought I would double it and do it in a year. 3 years later I'm still far off fluency (being able to function without a language barrier )
Your audio is so clear! What equipment are you using? I'm interested because I'm trying to learn Italian watching an Italian vlogger who films the way you do but his audio quality is poor and it makes it hard for me to understand him.
It’s the DJI mic. I’m certain there are cheaper options out there that you can get similar results with, but its size and charging case made it so easy to pack and travel with. Thanks for watching!
@@MethodMarcus Thanks. You made a good choice. I'm reminded of what a professional video producer told me once to the effect that people will tolerate a poor image quality in a video but not poor quality audio.

As a Portuguese speaker learning English I would say it takes more than 3 years to learn a language. And I'm not speaking about great stuff, You will be able to have a decent conversation but it's far from truly learning a language. To read an article and understand 95% of it takes more time. To write an article, oh gosh! Way more! If someone is stuck in the middle of the process and says that learned a language, well it's half true.
This goes for most of the content on TH-cam. People are just in it for buzz, and they make conent that other people fall pray to. The self-development content field is actually insane. People claim that waking up at 5 am everyday, reading 30 minutes before you take a shower, eating a healthy breakfast, doing as much work as you can in the day, then coming home and exercise while watching TV and going to bed at 8:30 PM will make you a genius, but it's not lmao.
People analyze things way too much. Stop trying and just do you.
Saw a lady telling kids that all they have to do to learn as well as the best kids in class was to look at their study methods 🤣
