I believe the edge up grip evolved from Western Fencing into use of the "Bowie" knife. There's many instances of knives being used that way primarily for the back cut. Since we are always stronger when pulling than when pushing, it's a devastating technique. Using a knife in pikal grip (point down, edge in) utilizes the same concept of pulling the blade through the target.
The edge in with the blade orientation up comes from classic Bowie knife fighting. It’s known as Mountain Man style and is used when in grappling range for hooking behind the leg, arm, etc. The sharpened top swedge is for backcuts, when facing the rear or snap cut when forward. You can also backcut with the primary edge in as well.
I recommend watching the video " Knife Designer James Williams Demos the HZ6 " . James Williams talks about using a blade edge up for maximum tissue deformity . If you pierce something with the edge up and pull your arm back you are going to do far more damage than if you were to do it with edge down .
How about a test of the Cold Steel CS35GKX blackout kukri. All the complaining about post gsm CS and they brought out something that all the purists were clamoring for a carbon steel kukri at a very reasonable price, Ive seen it advertised at sub $150. Now there is just crickets only one YT clip on it and all the guy does is baton some firewood. Please give this righteous blade some love.
In my opinion to grow as a knife Practitioner should always be open minded to all options The holding a Bowie blade with edge up go watch Rolando Estocada video on cold steel 1917 bowie
G'Day mate. There is an old propaganda film showing Bo Randall teaching this knife grip to some troops. th-cam.com/video/z4JBXc9m5uk/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=MitchellHarrison

Great video, Mat!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for stopping by.
That R1 Classic would be a very good one for
Cold Steel GSM to remake for today's Cold Steel knife fans. 😊
