John Daly wins in St Andrews | The Open Official Film 1995

  • John Daly wins the Open Championship at St Andrews with drama coming from Costantino Rocca, who needed a birdie at the last to tie Daly. When he duffed his pitch into the Valley of Sin, all hope seemed lost.
Yet using a putter from 65 feet, Rocca knocked his ball up the steep slope and then into the hole. He sank to his knees and slammed the ground with his fists in sheer jubilation. “I had no putt, but it went in,” said the Italian.
Rocca was spent even before the four-hole play-off, which Daly won by five strokes after the Italian took three to get out of the Road Hole Bunker allowing Daly to receive a heart-felt ovation at the last. “The names that are on here,” he marvelled while looking at the Claret Jug, “it’s unbelievable to be a part of it.”

That’s an all time electric pair, Jarmo Sandelin was not exactly a quiet player himself. Seems like those two had to have either totally loved or absolutely hated playing together, I’m guessing the latter

This was so awesome to watch, the changing of the guard so to speak. Arnie bows out, Daly wins, and so many golf greats playing here. Fantastic video with great narration, Cheers...

Ernie els has one of the most buttery swings in the history of golf. Definitely my favorite swing. So smooth and still rips bombs.

Vaughn Taylor has the smoothest buttery swing in golf but it's difficult to find footage of his swing. He won a pretty big event in 2016, beat Phil. I think he won 3 events on the PGA tour.

I agree with the naming of Ernie Els for smooth, buttery swing. I'll add 22 y.o. Jerry Pate, Fred Couples (ANY time in his career), prime Tom Watson, prime Johnny Miller. And Sam Snead, from before my time.

While other pros would practice in-between matches and tournaments John was drinking. While all the other pros invested in swing coaches and private trainer's John was busy giving the casinos 40 million dollars. Safe to say if John Daly had worked at golf ⛳ like Tiger 🐅 he easily could have been a top 5 golfer of all time.

Phil Mickelson (and Pete Rose and Michael Jordan for that matter) says hi. Daly isn't the only compulsive gambler in professional sports.
John Daly could have been a better player than he was. Just how good no-one can say.
