    So heartwarming that you show the prisoner that it’s sacrifice led the Nomai to the system and subsequently led to the hatchling (You) being inspired by the ruins to become an astronaut which then leads to you freeing the prisoner!

      It wasn’t heartwarming to me. The Prisoner realized that he helped cause the death of a civilization. Betrayed everyone he knew to do it. Then, the video leaves out The Prisoners footsteps to the water, which boots you out of the simulation, which means that he committed suicide. If you die in the real world while being in the simulation, then try to return to the real world, you simply disappear as you are dead in the real world. Only their conscience was left in the simulation. Very sad ending to those that understood.

    • @bendem94
      @bendem94 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @@Zentinel_85 I do understand, but I see it more as bittersweet. The way the owls remove you from the simulation when they catch you is by blowing out your lantern because they know that that will cause you to wake up. They know they can never wake up, so they instead actively choose to keep their consciousness preserved in the simulation. They could, at any time they wished, jump into the water or blow out their own lantern.
      The prisoner could have chosen to blow out their lantern at any time. But they chose to stay alive probably only to confirm to themselves that their action of letting the Eye signal loose (if only just for a few minutes) and subsequent suffering wasn't all in vain.
      The Prisoner's species must have survived within the simulation for an incredibly staggering amount of time. They arrived who knows how long before the Nomai. And the Nomai were alive while the Hearthian distant ancestors were just leaving the subterranean tidepools!
      The prisoner stayed alive willingly all that time. And the Player gives them the knowledge that the message was received. It is directly because of the Prisoner's sacrifice that the Player meets them all those millenia later. And he is freed.
      They COULD have blown out their lantern, but instead they were granted the freedom to die in the way they preferred: by leaving their cell and walking into the water.
      After, of course, leaving a beautiful final message to the Player. Bittersweet though it is, it's about as good an ending as the Prisoner could have hoped for.

    The moment at 5:24 where he hands you the torch is the defining moment of the DLC, and it's on-par with finding the Project, Solanum, or the Vessel. You have spent this whole game hearing others' stories. But in this moment, you are the storyteller, and your voice is heard, and with that voice you bring peace to someone who has spent uncountable lifetimes feeling that they failed those they cared about.

    When I did this DLC I didn't have my original save file, I instead started it on a new game. Because my character did not know the Interloper was responsible for the death of all Nomai in the Solar System, those slides were slightly different. The Nomai just suddenly collapsed because it was still a mystery as to why. It truly was the Traveler explaining what he knew.

    The prisoner's scream is unbelievably powerful. Anguish, triumph, experiencing hundreds of thousands of years of guilt and loneliness only to finally, finally see that his actions had a positive impact. Freedom. Grief. Release from the pain. It just communicates so much. I can't overstate my love for this game, i sincerely think it holds its own among the greatest masterpieces of fiction in human history and i will die on that hill (repeatedly on loop if i have to).

    Can I just say how genius the alien design is in this game? Throughout the game,the only sentient life you meet is our own friendly slug people (who live off of marshmallows and sap wine) and the docile, curious goat people of the Nomai. We as a species had no sense of war, strife or fear. The Owlks are the first true hunter-gatherers we meet; they are meat eaters, almost true carnivores based off their dental profile. They know conflict as we humans do, it is embedded in their very survival.
    I don't know why, but realizing that fact made me fear the Owlks before even entering the simulation. The fact that I could predict that our first encounters with each other would not be friendly based solely on THE DENTAL PROFILE of the aliens is something I deeply admire about this game. 11/10 best story I have ever experienced.

    I think that the final message is the owl people's version of the afterlife. You're on a raft in a beautiful river with the sun shining its light, as you make your way towards the horizon. I love the fact that the raft only has a single light motor, which is lit by the sun, implying that this is a one-way journey. The Prisoner is grateful for what you did for his sake and hopes that you will be able to meet again on a new adventure in the afterlife. So sad and so beautiful.

    • @lollononcegana7327

      No. The final message is the Prisoner saying to you that you will not be alone when you'll witness and be the cause of a new Big Bang. He will be there for you
      And, because the new universe will be born literally in the music, he answers the call and play your culture's note with his people's culture instrument

    • @flacoargentino1939
      @flacoargentino1939 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@lollononcegana7327It is technically the same, the prisoner is just inviting you to follow him to the afterlife. We can debate wether that means he knows you're gonna create a new universe or die as soon as you touch the water.
      Remember that he doesn't know of the time loop and that he knows that in order to reach inside of his prison you must have left your physical body behind, so it's logical to asume he thought you were going to die there as well. But he could also asume that perhaps you found a solution to that and were indeed going to reach The Eye.
      In the end however it's the exact same thing, since in both cases he is telling you to go with him to your final travel. The afterlife.

    Honestly, the 'strangers' are the most sympathetic antagonists ever written. Yes, they were scary, mislead, they locked up their own. But they were just scared, and who wouldn't be? They didn't know what we know. They didn't know that the universe had reached its natural end, that it was always going to be this way. In any other narrative, the owl people would be the heroes. So many stories about preventing the end of the universe, so little about accepting it.

    • @Daniel4119

      One of the most poignant moments that really stuck with me is when you are exploring a burned out temple to the Eye, you can open a hatch at it reveals a picture of new life regrowing on the skull. Somehow this image survived the purges.
      But that image comes from the slide of them getting visions of death from the Eye. Right before they freak out after reading what the Eye meant and that all will die, the Owlek begins to get a vision of this death leading into a new life. But the fear of the death made them stop paying attention to that part and immediately they focused on saving themselves from death. But those that still believed in the Eye were focused on the part of the image that showed new life.
      It is such a minor detail... but the Owleks were too scared at the vision of death that they didn't even let the vision finish to show life.

      @@Daniel4119 As far as i'm aware, the building you find that image in isnt a temple to the eye, but the prisoner's home; he was the only one who could realize the eye would also cause the rebirth of the universe while the others were only concerned with its death.

    One of the things I loved most about this ending was the prisoner being the embodiment of acceptance of the ending of life. I feel the Strangers were scared of it, so their plan was to hide forever in their world, and try to prevent others from finding out to keep others happy. The Prisoner was never scared of it though, and by doing what they did, it was huge I thought in terms of helping others accept the end. This DLC is perfect to be played once you learn how to beat the game, but just before you actually do. The Prisoner helps you accept death, and gives you the strength to do what must be done. Excellent job by Mobius.

    i started bawling when the prisoner let out their cry after witnessing your life story, a story only made possible by their work. they spent thousands of years trapped in that simulation, all for their efforts to pan out the best way they possibly could have while still being at the thing they feared most: the end of the universe that they so loved.

    • @JustLostTheGame

      What are your thoughts on why The Prisoner deactivated the signal blocker, though? It's just so sudden in the cutscene and it looks like they had no plan, they just sort of did it. Did they just want the end of the universe to come naturally?

    • @JustLostTheGame
      @JustLostTheGame 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@misero1444 I'm literally sitting here on the title screen of Outer Wilds after doing the ending again, expecting a new ending. You must've literally been typing this comment while I was experiencing exactly what you're talking about, what are the odds of that?
      Life's funny like that, aside from that though-the motive is definitely a bit clearer now, but what if no one ever found/visited the eye to begin with? Would the universe never end? What if the signal was never received in that short time it was unblocked? What if it was received but no species had the technology at the time to visit it?
      I know it's very coincidental to fit the romantic nature of the entire story, just as how (as far as we know currently) that we're the only intelligent species in the universe, so it's like a "what are the odds of all of this happening" kind of moment and is relatable through that, but it still seems so unbelievably strict.
      I personally thought it would be cool if The Prisoner was the one with the telescope who actually finds the Eye of the Universe to begin with, then it would make sense that they would want to defy their kind and unblock the signal. I just find the way it was presented a little sloppy I guess, like it seems as though the Prisoner was unaware of the consequences of turning off the Signal Blocker with the way they react to being captured, and yet when they deactivate it, they look around as if they know they're doing something that could be seen as an extreme offense. Did the Prisoner think that no one would notice if it was deactivated? Are they simply just naive? Were they just tired of living that life of being ina simulation? The information we're shown is purposely vague-the Prisoner wakes up from the simulation and decides to deactivate the Signal Blocker, what was the deciding factor in that? Now that I've seen that alternate ending, I get it, but I guess I'm still not completely satisfied.
      Side note, I love how you can actually see the Signal Blocker floating around the Eye of the Universe.

    such a beautiful moment, telling your story and that scream at the end. imagine coming up with the bravery to unleash the thing your entire race of people feared most, and then having to wonder for hundreds of thousands of years whether that was bravery or stupidity. The absolute relief that they must've felt realizing they managed to contribute like this to the next universes creation.
    while I have my problems with the DLC I don't really care much, just like with the main game they managed to tie everything together so nicely into an absolute tearjerker of an ending, and in like a quarter of the time too. when fist starting the DLC I felt like this would've been better as a standalone short game, separate from outer wilds, but now I can't see it as anything else but an integral part of this game's story, despite how disjointed from the wider mystery it appears.

    I legitimately think the only thing the ending could have used was you being able to see his light extinguish when you're exiting the tunnel. I don't think that would've been possible - remember that the lantern is their link to the simulation.
      You can only enter via using the lantern in the Stranger - and you will have a Copy of it in the simulation. This is the Link that connects you to the Dream World. You will be booted out of the simulation when either the Virtual or Physical lantern is extinguished, either by your own will or when forced.
      Same reason why you cannot see any lanterns when the individual chambers are flooded, extinguishing the connection of the owls. They lose the Connection outside, which also "kills" the lantern that links them inside.
      There are no "corpses" in the simulation.

      Yea I think he realized that their fear of the end paralized their whole civilisation. When you think of it, the whole theme of the owlkins is that they have a hard time letting things go. My only question is why tf didnt the Owlks make their simulation more damage-proof? Didnt they realize that after a long period of time there real bodies would all decay and die, and their stranger world as well? If they had found some way to keep their fires in the artifacts stored inside an extremely durable place they could have lived perhaps a bit longer, though not eternally. I know the whole idea is acceptance of the end, but I'm thinking from the owlk POV here.
    They practically left themselves surrounded by running water only being held back by a dam that would be left unattended when they flee to the simulation, and the structures they entered the simulation from are just normal buildings with a little hidden wall.

    Whether by accident or design, this game is a fantastic lesson in spirituality that allows the player to befriend death. I've always had a strong tendency for anticipatory grief, so seeing this topic treated with such grace was an important experience that allowed me to make some further decisions in my life. I may have lost a cornerstone person recently, but the end doesn't invalidate any of the journey. The road goes ever on, and the only mistake we can make is to stagnate. Life and Death are the exact same thing. Die daily. Rilke said it too:
    Du musst das Leben nicht verstehen,
    dann wird es werden wie ein Fest.
    Und lass dir jeden Tag geschehen
    so wie ein Kind im Weitergehen von jedem Wehen
    sich viele Blüten schenken lässt.
    Sie aufzusammeln und zu sparen,
    das kommt dem Kind nicht in den Sinn.
    Es löst sie leise aus den Haaren,

    und hält den lieben jungen Jahren
    nach neuen seine Hände hin.

      @@matthewcox7946 I don't think the Owlkin really advanced their technology much until an external need arised.
      Look at their architecture for example, in every instance we can see (flashbacks, the stranger, and finally the dreamworld), the classical wooden houses remain unchanged, even though we know they've had a good amount of other materials and metals to use.
      Then there are the slide reels. Don't you think it's strange how, even in the untold number of years it took them to get from their home system to the Nomai/Hearthian's, they they never upgraded their history storing methods past choppy slides, heavy reels and large lanterns? Also note how that remains their ONLY method of storing their history compared to the Nomai's text, picture, liquid metal displays and audio logs.
      And lastly there's the stranger itself, a home in disarray that never had it's blasted apart airlock holes fixed, it's design flaw with the dam ever iterated on, and it's burned temples just littering perfectly good open spaces.
      Let's also not forget their main theme Elegy of the Rings, which sounds like it hasn't been iterated upon in a millenia.

      Their Dreamworld, an amazing simulation that allows for life after death, and potentially any kind've reality they want; one environment, permanently at night, same architecture and tech as their old home. And worst, when their are annoying reminders of how imperfect the simulation is;
      Having to carry a lantern with you at all times that should never be put out,
      And the well-known glitches, never get patched out.
      It's my believe that while the Nomai are fundamentally curious, and would always drive greater technological prowess for the good of all involved, the Owlkin are fundamentally incurious, and save for the time they slipped into religious fervor, would be comfortable living in the past without needing to invent anything past what they've already got.
