Elliott, Cook, Cram and Coe take down the record set by Ponomaryev, Kirov, Malozyemlin and Reshetnyak of the Soviet Union from 1978 by a margin of over four seconds.
In so doing, they set a WR that would last for almost 24 years in this rarely contested event.
Peter Elliott (1:49.14)
Garry Cook (1:46.20)
Steve Cram (1:44.54)
Sebastian Coe (1:44.01) - กีฬา
I was there!!! Fantastic memories, I was 17!!!
7.02.43 is the current world record set in August 2006. If this race had been run in 1981 with Coe,Ovett,Cram & Elliott I’d guarantee it would have been under 7 minutes. Very rarely run race.
Not surprised the Kenyans hold the WR. Agreed, Coe, Ovett, Cram and Elliott would have gone under 7.00mins and had they done that, doubt it would have ever been touched for a very long time. A rarely run race indeed.
However, with track technology and Footwear technology, it would have been tested. Then again, what if Cram, Coe, Ovett and Elliott ran with Today's technology......... not worth thinking about, they'd have killed it!!!
Thanks for sharing this. Never seen it before!
I was going to this meeting, but changed my mind to go to the park with friends, but I could hear the crowd roar.from the park a
Mile and1/2 away, this was my deepest regret missing this because it would never happen again .4 great
I remember Elliott had just come back from a 2 week holiday in Benidorm where he did no training to be told he was in the 4x800m record attempt - it showed in the last 200m and must have been very frustrating for him.
Great point. Shows also how brilliant he was. He had just turned twenty and could run comfortably under 1:50 with two weeks of booze in him.
It's not exactly accurate, but I got Coe's first lap in 49.3 and his final time at 1:43.97... so it's probably about 1:44.0 or 1:44.1. Excellent running in windy conditions out by himself.
I have the full dvd of this race. Coe's splits were 23.4! 49.1 and 1:44.01 (although given as 1:43.9 HT on the day). He also clearly eased up in the last straight, conscious that he was going to have to run 3 rounds of the 800 at the Europeans the following week.
Considering the windy conditions and the far too fast early pace, not to mention the lack of a pace maker or any drafting, it was probably worth a solo 1:43.0 in good conditions, and indicates 1:42.5 form in a well paced race on the circuit.
Good stuff
Thanks, Deano. Great info. Much appreciated.
Great advert for UK middle distance running in the 80's! Shame Ovett was injured, otherwise it might have gon close to 7 mins and might still stand!
So was Coe a 1500m runner. Double Olympic Champion at the event if I recall. Also had a faster split here than Cram, 1:44.0. And Cram had some company on his second lap.
Deano...old FRIEND ELLIOTT was out of sorts wasnt he ..7:00 MINUTES SHOULD have been run this day...yes???
@@simonedwards5564 yes, had Ovett been there in reasonable shape or Elliott from the following year, then 7:00 should have been possible, which I think would mean that they would still hold the WR!
It was 1:43.9 on the commentary, (later officially given as 1:44.01) after going through 200m in 23.8 and 400m in 49.1, in very windy conditions. The fastest 800m set in a "proper" race that season was Cram's 1:44.45 (closely followed by Coe's Zurich run of 1:44.48, easing up over the last 30m). One can see that Coe took over from practically a standing start, so I would say this "solo" run was superior to Cram's .
Do you know the individual times for the B team?
If they had tried this record in 84 with elliott in better form and Ovett, without the troubles he suffered in L.A also not on a windswept track. They would easily have cracked 7 minutes and probably would still stand to day as a fitting tribute to a great era of middle distance running.Coe,Ovett,Cram And Elliott.
each at peak, you have 144 average

Coe was a league apart on time trials and talent in the 800m but either seemed to be out of form or run bad tactically at championships. Watch the 1980 Olympic final; he could have won that but gave himself no chance. He was a great 1500m runner but had more competition however he got his tactics right more often and his blistering speed when fit gave him a devastating finish; hence 2X Olympic 1500m Gold medals.
Both Cram and Elliott were probably stronger at 1500 than 800 but had times of just under 1:43 so very fast. Coe, of course, held the world record for a long time and, if I remember rightly ran his 1:41.73 when no one else had run under 1:43 let alone 1:42. Which, of course, makes him never winning a true global championship a real shame.
My dream team for this one would be Ovett, Cram, Elliott and Coe. Ovett never ran as fast as the others at 800 but I am sure could have run faster as he ran to win not for times at 800. All that said, I don't think there was ANY time when they were all capable of their best and fit. If you had, they could have run well under 7 minutes.
@deano27671
At 2:52 watch as Steve CRAM nearly gets run over !!!!!!!!! Maaàaaaàan he was luck,,,and very agile ...good man ,,
Does anyone have video of the Women's 4x800 World Record by the USSR in 1984?
To Philip Gage, Elliott was slower than Coe at every distance from 200 up to a Mile. Coe had 11 individual world records v Elliott's ZERO! Coe had 2 Olympic golds & 2 silvers, compared to Elliott's 1 silver. Elliott wasn't in the same league as Coe.
deano27671 elliott had a commonwealth games gold and unlucky with injuries and worked a full time manual job and later on worked part time but still a manual job
I know you are speaking about indoors only but worth noting that Elliott held the 1500m indoor world record.
World 1500m Indoors 1990 (Elliott) Coe never ran a world mile or 1500m record indoors.
@@bootymanagerbut coe had plenty of world records outdoors and won 2 Olympic golds case closed
I was there and remember being very annoyed at Peter Elliott for his slow first leg!
YOU KNOW IT,,, THEY DEFINITELY WOULD HAVE SMASHED 7:00 MINUTES !!!!!! DAMN IT !!!!!!!
@eiboukun
I agree
haha talk about a week link, nice one elliot
1:43.9 hand timed by commentators/ 1:44.01 given as official split.
Under 7 minutes without that headwind which really killed them (and a slightly better prepared Elliott).
what was seb coe's split?
Should have a 4x800 in Olympics fun to watch
why dont they have 4x800s anymore
4x8s are so awsome got to run at the ohio state meet in it i greatful for it
"And Sebastian Coe's time, which won't be recognised as such......." ???????? Thanks a million for posting but did you really have to end it there? What was his time?
scrumpymanjack 1.44
which one hallfield or mayfield
Im a junior in high school my best leg of the 4x8 this year was 2:02. Our 4x8 was ranked 5th in the state and first in our district. Our baton was knocked out of my hand (i was the second runner, in first place) quick end to a huge dream.. :(
No Ovett or even McKean some of the best times of these would make a WR of sub 7mins :( if only
@jdreherj i mean like in the olympics and in the wc
Why.why. WHY ???????? COULD YOU NOT RECORD THE LAP OF HONOUR !!!!!!!!!!!! HUH????? MADNESS
コー選手は存在感がすごかったですね。日本からもこんな選手がでてくると、陸上界も盛り上がるのですが。
DID YOU REALLY PACE START ON YOUR MARKS ?
Cook taught at my primary school!
4x800s are so fucking good
take it one step at a time train hard and before you know it you'll be running 2:30s, 2:20s, etc
Spoke about athletics to my cousin and he said he easily beat cook in school over 200 but had no interest in taking up running
@Tonesy99 Dude, 4x8's suck ass, I had to run them in highscool, such a fuckin drag it was
I run 4x800 now n im not nowhea as good as these guys. I run a 2:41 by myself :/
