- Car review of the 1997 Toyota Corolla RSI 20 Valve, in this video we are taking a look at this beautifully maintained Toyota with all its original parts still present in the car, running a 1.6 litre engine this is not your high end spec, but this is a very reliable and fun car to own. The 20Valve is also infamous amongst South African car enthusiasts for its beautiful sound and fair performance for what it is, being a 1600cc engine after all. In this video we are taking the car for a test drive, look at the interior and exterior, this car has been kept in its original form for the past 25years since being manufactured in 1997.
The car is running with a five speed manual gearbox, and with a motor powering the two front wheels, fitted with a decent pair of semi leather seats giving you a nice comfortable drive with the semi bucket feel to it. #toyota #20valve #jdm

I've owned all variations of this shape rolls from 130 to 20v. What I've learnt:
1) these cars get vrek hot quickly when parked in the sun. Doorpad upper vinyls always deteriorate. Tint is a must.
2) really stable with stock springs, great suspension.
3) They like to pick up rust inside the boot near back windscreen.
4) 20vs like to burn lambda sensors ...
5) Blacktops are not unreliable. Mine had almost 590000kms original motor. Just take care of it and be sensible when driving.
6) The air con units on the 20v aren't meant to last...get used to it.
7) that black strip above rear numberplate is really difficult to find..
8) door handles break if you have kids...
9) woolen fiber oem hoodlining is a pain to keep clean
Absolute beauty!! Reminded me of my 20vs iv owned, regret selling each one. Some specs for the readers.
1997 toyota rsi blacktop 5 speed 0-100 7.71 sec( gets to over 100km/h in second gear), curb weight 1010kg
1998-1999 Toyota rxi old spec 5speed 0-100km/h 8.49 sec, curb weight 1060kg ( due to extra luxury the 0-100 times decreased )
Late 1999-2001 Rsi new spec 6speed with curb weight 1060kg and 0-100 in 8.9ish sec ( due to shorter 6speed gear ratios changing into 3rd happens just before hitting 100km/h, but the 6speed feels alot nippier on the road at the expense of weaker gear synchros)
Then from late 1999 -2002 we had the rxi 6speed new spec, same specs as abo ve. We also had the rxi 6speed airbag spec with same specs which included airbags etc.
The feeling sitting behind the wheel of an rsi, seating position, solid gearknob,smooth gears( if u use 75w90 fully synthetic castrol gear oil), lovely free revving motor! You just took me back to my first time getting into my 20v,jinnnnne need to get my hands on one soon again! Btw, all the 20valve ranges in S.A came out in blacktops,any silvertop motors are all imports :) fantastic video! Got me typing essays haha

My father has a 4afe 160i Corolla like this... It was my grandfather car and now it's my father car hopping it will be mine one day ... oh and its always a 1997 model
That emblem is the original old Toyota emblem , my original 1990 Toyota Corolla 1.6GL had that emblem on many parts, that obviously needed to be replaced after 30+ years, great reliable cars

Howzit ddsa. Great video. I remember when this car was first launched. Massive hype, especially after the review on drive time Tv show on sabc back in the day. Is it a 5 speed or 6 speed?
This car is an absolute legend and the example you have is really clean. Future generations would not be able to understand the then giant killing ability of the RSi/RXi and that 5valve per cylinder head with itbs in a Corolla body shell. People nowadays are addicted to boost.
Looking at a few features on the car makes one think it’s a Namibian import?
The NAM sticker on the rear. The radio has a Toyota badge. I recall back in the day the RSi and RXi came with a Panasonic unit in the front (not a shuttle).
The stickers on the tappet of the engine cover makes it look like a Japanese import brought to Namibia, then sold in SA? Does this car have cams installed?
The 20 valve badge never appeared on the boot of these cars, which is another reason to think that this is an import?
It would be great to see a Nissan 300zx twin turbo or 350/370z on your channel.

yoh stock engine and the radio now thats something you just dont see much of... also that sticker is the first badge of Toyota after they moved from the name TOYODA from 1936/37 all the way to the late 1950s.
