      You completely fail to acknowledge the fact that by watching his men burn Jaime's worst fear has come to life. He is witnessing Aerys' vengeance: "He meant to burn with the rest of us and rise again, reborn as a dragon to turn his enemies to ash". He didn't charge at Dany out of blind loyalty. He charged at Dany for the same noble reason he slew Aerys.

    • @CodDBZ534
      @CodDBZ534 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      he killed Aerys in the name of his family; at the time the greater good was the least of his concerns. he kill her (Cersei) for the greater good though but king slaying wasn't that. he definitely charged Dany in the name of his queen (going to show how Cersie would be his undoing as Olenna stated she would)

      I don't think Jaime was doing it for Cersei, in face, I don't think Cersei came into it at all. Knowing what I do of flashbacks from PTSD, I believe that when Jaime saw his men burning he basically "froze" to an extent and by that I mean he didn't entirely freeze as he could still fight and did show courage by staying with his men, something many officers would never do. However, I think it brought him back to the Mad King and his order to burn everyone and how Jaime prevented so many from dying even though he was branded possibly unfairly as the "King Slayer." It seems that at least on the show, Tyrion and Brienne are the only ones who know why he did that.
      If you remember, as the Dothraki hoard was approaching then you hear the dragon, you see this "holy shit" look in his eyes and then you see Drogon. I believe that brought Jaime back to the Mad King and in that moment instead seeing Daenerys he saw the Mad King or was reminded of that time which is why I think he charged at her the way he did. He was in some sort of flashback where he believed that he would be saving a lot of lives by killing her too as she is the daughter of the Mad King.
      I also think that he did listen to Lady Olenna about Cersei and I think there will be a final straw for him with her.

      Shannon Reynolds well said. I agree completely. I'm interested to see how he takes Olenna's words and how his relationship will play out with Cersei in the end.

      He better charge at his sister first. The guy was coming back from a place where he had slaughtered so many people in order to provide gold for his mad sister, yet people admire his moralities. He's as evil as Cersei. They're one soul in two bodies as Cersei once said.

    I don't believe Jaime charged at dany to try and 'win the war' for cersei as stated in the video. For him, he doesn't know dany as we do he has heard the stories of her burning and crucifying people in essos and her similarities to her father, for whom Jaime sacrificed his honour and respect in order to kill and protect kings landing. He saw his men burning and in that moment for him it was proven that dany was similar to her father, and in a way mirroring what he tried to stop. I doubt cersei even crossed his mind in that moment, this was for him and what he believed was the good of the realm. It was worth dying for because he wouldn't have been able to live with himself had he not tried

      Well like you said... Jamie doesn't see and know like the us the viewer does. But if you take into account all of what we can see and know, it almost certain that Jaime did charge at Drogo for all of those reason and the reasons you mentioned. It was at that moment that he realized he can end the war which in itself indirectly implies that he can help Cersei win the war. He can save thousands of life from the same fate that the supposedly mad lady in front of him who is burning his troops alive. He is willing to forsake his honor and throw his life away to end the destruction and possible threat. He did for it for the innocent lives. He did it for Cersei. His name. Himself. and even for Dany as well you can said. In Jamie's mind this is what has to be done even if no one agrees or can understand him.

      Maddie Carberry I completely agree. I don't think he had the chance to even think about Cersei, he was in battle. And did what any courageous soldiers would do. In the case of Jaime himself, he's always been very reckless, he does things in the spur of the moment. When his men were dying I could just imagine him thinking "Goddamn Targaryens!"

    • @djlu3011

      The book is written from a point of view of each character. I think the reason why George wrote it that way was to show situations like these where a character who we see as good, can be seen as a villain from another person's eyes. Jaime sees Dany as a villain. And he has every right to. We all see Lex Luther as the villain and Superman as the hero. But that's probably because we are always watching from the point of view of Superman.

      I think his evil and reckless personality emerged because of consecutive dissapointments that he had (he joined the Kingsguard mostly because he wanted to be close to Cersei, which he couldn't, and then he had to serve and protect the most hideous king of Westeros' history). There's an interesting line in the books in which he states that he wanted to be like Arthur Dayne, but somehow became the Smiling Knight.

    I think a lot fo people are forgetting what Jaime actually went through during his early days in the King's Guard. He stood by King Aerys' side all the time, as a hostage to keep Tywin at bay. Therefor, he was the closest witness to all the mad king's burnings. He encouraged the rest of the in the King's Guard to "go away inside" as a way to cope with what they saw every day. Jaime was 15 years old, and having to make such a choice at such a young age, witnessing all that... it will haunt you forever. I think that was why he looked so spooked and desperate during the battle against Daenerys, where he saw his men burn alive, and the only way he could stop it, was to charge against Daenerys and her dragon. In my opinion, Jaime is definitely the best and most well written character in GoT -So complex and interesting to follow :)

  • @JasperHowland
    @JasperHowland 6 ปีที่แล้ว +120

    Lady Olenna said: "You love her. You really do love her… you poor fool. She’ll be the end of you.”
    You could take this omen literal, meaning She will be the death of Jaime, or, a metaphorical/spiritual end to him and subsequent "rebirth".
    Shed what makes you sink and drown in darkness, throw off the weight of the Lion (armor) ;unhand the golden burden.
    Rise from the smoke and salt (the body of water that he fell into is saltwater) as a new man.
    Jaime will kill Cerci. Small details matter, like how Jaime is a whole minute younger then his twin sister.
    How in episode 1 of Season 7 an interaction between Jaime and Cerci takes place on top of the freshly painted floor map. Cerci stands on King's landing which is located in the area called the throat, Jaime stands to the right of her in the Riverlands, on the region called The Fingers.
    There were many veiled threats/warnings from Tyrion to Cerci about chocking and tasting ash; Maggy the Frog said "And when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you."
    Not to mention that Jaime is Azor Ahai
    In High Valyrian vocabulary
    Āeksio ondos - Hand of gold
    Āeksio Oño - Lord of Light
    Also Jaime was "The Hand of the King". King could be easy exchanged for Lord, but, this would be all metaphor and hidden double meaning.
    The story of Lightbringer also parallels with the evolution of Jaime's character throughout the seasons.
    Azor Ahai forged his sword and tempered it in water but the sword shattered, Jaime broke down in the bath house when traveling with Breanne, as the video stated this changed him.
    The sword was forged again but this time was tempered by stabbing it into the heart of a lion. Jaime released Tyrion, this action caused the death of Tywin which was known by the titles like The OLD Lion, or The Lion of Lannister.
    Finally the sword was Created a third time, and with heavy heart Azor Ahai Plunged the sword into the chest of his wife tempering the sword, imbuing it with her essence, bringing forth Lightbringer.
    The sword, Lightbringer isn't a literal sword, It's allegorical/symbolism for Jaime Lannister. In the Middle Ages, the sword was often used as a symbol of the word of God or in this case, The Hand of God.

    Jaime didn't just charge Dany for Cersei... He attacked Dany to end the bloodshed. To keep innocent people safe. His chivalry does not come from Cersei it comes from Brienne... remember Riverrun? Besides that, he was watching his worst nightmare come alive in a dragon burning men to death. Forgetting how big of a role Aerys actually has had in Jaime's life is foolish. To Jaime this battle just seems like Dany is her father all over again. In his eyes he'd rather dance with the devil he knows (Cersei) than the devil that has 3 fire breathing dragons and reminds him of the Mad King.

    • @ReporterRed
      @ReporterRed 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I agree. I like the video's interpretation, and it may be partly true, but I think Jaime's charge was in large part because of the witnessing of the thousands of soldiers being burnt alive, somewhat perhaps reminiscent of the Mad King, Dany's father.

    • @keivanfarzanehkari8045

      Yes, he cares so much about the innocents. Is that why he attacked Highgarden, slaughtered the soldiers there, and took the food and gold of the people of the Reach for his evil sister whom he deeply loves? By the way, killing people on the battlefield, the thing Dany did, doesn't make people devil, but killing innocent people and a group of religious fanatics who have been brought to power by you (Cersei) and then supporting such actions blindly (Jaime) makes people devil.

    • @somedwarvenwriter7535
      @somedwarvenwriter7535 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Keivan Farzanehkari bloody hell, how obtuse are you people?! They are in a goddamn war. No it doesn't excuse anything he did to the Tyrell's but he's goddamn trying to do the right thing. Do you honestly think a man that doesn't care would ask Dickon how he truthfully felt about the battle? I can tell you two handed Jaime wouldn't have cared but one handed Jaime asked and understood Dickon's feelings or can't you read an actors performance? Your very readily forgetting the wonderful send off Jaime gave to Olenna as well- not taking her head off as I've herd many people say that would have if they were in Jaime's position (for her part in killing *jaime's son* not that Joff wasn't a little shit).
      Alrighty, perhaps you're just not looking at things with a wide enough view, I do apologise for being hostile but I keep getting the same easy to debunk debate thrown at me and frankly it's irritating.
      In case your curious, I don't think Dany is a bad person. She's made plenty of mistakes but she can be redeemed as well as anyone can.
      I don't like defending Cersei and I hate that the show writers have forced me into a place where I have to but Cersei didn't really have a choice. She was going to likely be killed or loose all of her power if she hadn't destroyed the faith. I'm pissed that she did it and even more irritated that Jaime didn't kill her for it but I am also not entirely angry with show Jaime. He's really trying his best and in the first episode it was easy to see he didn't enjoy the person Cersei was now. His simple line of telling Cersei no before they banged says a lot more then people that haven't read the books could comprehend.
      Over all I am also irritated the Jaime hasn't left Cersei yet seeing as he already has in the books but I think he'll get their eventually. He really is trying to to hurt as many people. If you can't see his obvious shift in character after Riverrun you are blind. And finally, sorry, thought this was on a different comment I made. I wouldn't have been as aggressive with this one but now that I've written it I'm not going back.... have a good day, mate. Sorry again.

    I am astonished at how ON POINT your analysis turned out to be. Not surprised as such because everything you do is always absolutely wonderful. But the accuracy of your prediction regarding his end is JAW DROPPING. I could NOT make sense of it until I saw this video, and now I'm glad I did. I can make peace with it. I guess, in the end, he embraced both versions of himself. His sister (whom he embraced also literally, as it turns out :p) and his humanity. He might have disguised it under arrogance and poise in order to protect himself and his relationship with Cersei against the rest of the world, but everything that he ever did, he did for love. His return to her was pointless, reckless, and irrational. In other words, he was a human being. Sometimes, we just do stuff that doesn't make sense. And love, however twisted, is often a key motivator. Jaime loved more than anyone else I have ever known in a fictional story. Beyond reason, hope, sanity. Olenna was right. He was a fool.
    And of course, he would go back to her....
    I guess his appeal to so many people (myself included) resides in the fact that he was able to see the beauty hidden behind monstrosity. Inwards (Cersei, he always saw and admired her unconditional devotion to her family) and outwards (Tyrion and Brienne). I cannot help but roll my eyes at the way his final episode was written. And, much like Daenerys' seemingly inescapable fate, the lack of depth and inconsistencies in the dialogues and the rushed pace of it all made his final decision unbearable to me. But now, I finally get it. That's a relief because I could not fathom how this show could have messed everything up so irrevocably and so quickly. The harsh truth is, it didn't. It was executed poorly (SOOOOO POOOORLY), but yeah. It was always there, and it makes sense. Damn it. What a sad, depressing, logical ending.
    Now, considering that the show did distance itself from the books, I can only hope that Book!Jaime has a brighter, more optimistic future ahead of him.
    Not gonna hold my breath though...

      Yes!!! Finally someone gets it!! Almost all of Jaime's impulsive decisions included his family (pushing Bran out of the window, killing his own cousin, releasing Tyrion, going to Dorne to get Myrcella back, etc)
      The fact that no one seems to understand something so blatantly stater is crazy.
      Jaime's fate may change in the books, but I saw his television counterparts fate coming a long time ago.

    This character looks like a puppet in the show for most of the time, it seems to me that he is being pushed around in his family all the time, yet his devotion is unquestionable. He is always struggling between his family and himself, the conflict can be big.I think Jamie is the most real character in the show, he is like a mirror, reflecting our real life.

    • @nikitas1841
      @nikitas1841 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He is even more deep and interesting in the books because a big chunk of his character development consists of him ruminating on his past and pondering over his life choices. These parts are among the best in the books in my opinion. I dunno, it's just so cool to see Jaime recollecting the fight between the person he was looking up to, ser Arthur Dayne, and a famous outlaw the Smiling Knight, and realizing that while at the time he was trying to become Arthur Dayne, at some point he bacame the Smiling Knight instead.
      You don't get that in the show. Hell, in the show they made Arthur Dayne look like a fool instead of a legendary hero. Dual wielding swords is so fucking ridiculous. Apparently they didn't have the space in the script to make a proper buildup for him and his legendary sword Dawn, and I get it, but man did they ruin this potentially great scene by using this absurd fantasy trope. Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked because of my hurt feelings of an Arthur Dayne fan. As much as you can be a fan of a character from a book that isn't even alive during the events of that book that is.

    I don't think Jamie charged Drogon for Cersei. I think he charged because he couldn't stop hearing the Mad King's voice. "Burn them all." To stop Aerys' will from being fulfilled was more valuable to him than his own life in that moment. He knew he wasn't going to get away from Drogon even if he did kill Dany.

  • @RollersPostulate
    @RollersPostulate 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I don't think he charged the dragon only for Cersei, I think he did it because she was the enemy, the one burning all of his men alive. With his last ounce of courage he saw an opening and took it even if it meant taking his life.

    Jamie charging at Drogon was less about his love for Cersei and more about his loathing of the mass destruction one single thing can cause. With the Mad King, it was wildfire. With Dany, it is her dragons. Jamie hates it when innocents have to suffer on mass scale due to one person's arrogance. Sure he excuses Cersei from this but at the same time him charging at Drogon had nothing to do with her. It was a last ditch attempt at saving his people from destruction. It was heroic. Utterly mad, but heroic nonetheless and saying it had something to do with Cersei taints that heroic action.

    I think there is one major mistake in this character study. In the battle with Daenerys he doesn't charge at her for Cersei. If you've paid attention you see the terror in Jaime's face during the battle, there terror he feels as he sees his men burning to ashes. For him it's a major flashback to his time with the Mad King who burnt people as well. And while he is on the field with fire and screams all around him, he cannot help but see the madness of the Mad King who commanded him to Burn them all, realized in this battle. So all he tries to do is save the world again from this madness. At that moment he certainly does not think of Cersei.
    On a side note, it's interesting to see how often Cersei actually talked about burning cities to the ground and how she burnt down the Great Sept. I'm sure because of something like that he will also put an end to Cersei.

It's not the character's fault the showrunners ruined the scene, even they admitted it that it sent the wrong message unintentionally.

    To all of you commenting that Jaime is the bad guy:
    To *label a complex character like Jaime as 'bad'* just goes to show that you're *missing a big aspect of the show.*
    *Good and bad aren't black and white.*
    The *so called honorable knights did nothing to stop the Mad King from trying to burn half a million people.* The honorable *Ned Stark judged others* who didn't match his preconceived idea of 'good', *viewed them as inferior* to him on a moral level and showed *no respect to those people,* not even to their faces. *Is that truly, 100% 'good'?*
    The oath breaking traitor *Jaime saved thousands of innocents lives* by breaking a sacred oath.
    He only *attempted child murder to prevent the execution of his lover and children* and a possible war. *Is that really evil?*
    This isn't Harry Potter where the plot is a story about good vs evil. A lot of *GoT characters are different (50, lol) shades of grey* and *seeing their values in life, their own personal definitions of 'good' and 'bad' is the beauty of Game of Thrones.*

      Just a *self entitled, self righteous brat with average intelligence who gets away with everything through magic, luck and advisors.* (Seriously even spies and assasins who were hired by her enemies betray their mission because they fall in love with her)

    I think Jaime wanted to end the war. Period. Not for Cersei, not for himself, but to spare the slaughter. I mean could you imagine seeing what you perceive as the Mad Kings daughter in the making, burn so many soldiers, use savages who are known to rape, pillage and inslave, and just believing that such a person could bring destruction 100x more than Cersei? I really do believe that he wanted to end the war so such power isn't kept by Daenarys. Just remember that the war started on Daenarys' terms, not Cersei's. Interesting discussions below regarding how worthy Jaime is of anyone's 'devotion'. The battle scene in Ep. 4 worked so well because there was genuine tension of the fight between characters that we care about. There was no "good" or "bad" side, it wasn't clear cut, we didn't want to see Jaime, Bronn, or Dany (or Drogon) killed, but it sure looked like it would happen. So good tension and emotion. Well done to script writers.
    We like Jaime because, unlike other "monster" characters in the GoT, he has had an intriguing arc. Joffery and Ramsey had NO redeeming arc, but Jaime, although portrayed at first like them, has. So we want to see where that arc goes. It is not yet resolved. It isn't about "he is bad" or "he is good" it is about "he is on a journey" which makes him interesting. More interesting than Dany, as her arc isn't as pronounced or interesting. Sill love her as a character, but she isn't growing in as interesting a way as Jaime.
    And that is what GoT is good at. It shows that flawed, broken people can change and grow. Ned was too virtuous from the start. Too one dimensional, so was right to die as his character was a catalyst to events, not the hero of them.

In the books his former Kingsguard brothers confront him with the things he did and attack him and Brienne in a dream, the light of his flaming sword goes out and he dies, then he wakes up and decides to save Brienne from Vargo Hoat. The lion in him died in that moment. It's just Jaime from this point, Cersei stop loving him and he doesn't even care when Tywin dies.
