Is Earth Being Watched?

- In the last few decades, our astronomical techniques have developed to the point that we can now detect planets orbiting other stars. Planets which transit their star make up most of our catalogs, because they are so easy to find and can reveal so much more information about the planets. For example, in the near future we might even be able to detect life remotely on these worlds. This makes us wonder - could someone out there already be using this method on us? Here, we explore which stars are best placed to detect us using the transit method, what they might learn about us and the possibility of reciprocal transit configurations, enabling a possible means of direct communication across the stars.

@@davidwarren2771 physics, and by extension astrophysics etc, is maths based and therefore safe from political manipulation. Even in the USSR, whilst other sciences failed and were repressed by Lysenkoism etc, physics and maths still flourished. It gives me hope. At least, for now...

As an armchair astronomer; for nearly 45 years now, I didn't just start out as one because of an interest in planets and stars, and because both Nebula and galaxies were pretty, but more so fascinating to my belief that, we are not alone in the Universe... I have to argue that, deep down inside most astronomers, this too must be their guiding reason for being astronomers. You don't have to be a tin-foil hat wearing Alien hunter or UFO enthusiast to believe that our very own planet may have been visited by our distant cousins, but be open to the fact that we are not the Top-rung of the ladder or totem-pole... not by a long shot.
As humans, we have to learn to become more humble in our thinking of intelligence and of our place in the Universe; a place where, intelligent life on other worlds may not be as close-by as we hoped, but perhaps much more populous and but further away than we care to imagine... the absence of observable intelligent life is not the excuse that it does not exist; it merely means, we're not looking at what may make for a good home for intelligent life, despite technology, or our ability to peer deep & far enough out, or in the right place -- it is out there, and it may take a bit more time before we discover it. It will then be, in the discovery, how we will then want to perceive our own life, values, and place in the universe.
The fact that not all planets 'Transit' across the face of a distant star from our plane of view, and those that do pass within our plane or transit of view is just a very small percentage of possible habitable planet, but from the stars that have been observed to have transitory planets, it is a good start to realize that our universe is much more filled with potential life-giving worlds than most academic astronomers had envisioned decades past; it is now time for them to face the facts, we are not alone.
For now, we can only look as deep or far as, and resolve images, as much as our present technology will allow us to; but astronomy has come a long, long way since Ptolemy, Tycho Brahe, Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton, and it is time for professional astronomers to give up the notion that we're alone, but accept the fact that we are at the midst of finding life beyond our own world... this; not Astrophysics nor Astrobiology, not even Cosmology, but what Astronomy is truly about... the search for intelligent life in around neighboring stars and across the Universe.
Beautiful comment, good thoughts and I agree. We'll find them eventually, hopefully sooner than later but there's an element of luck to it as well. Either way the pure desire for knowledge makes these exciting times to live in despite tough current events, as we are quickly accelerating our rate of discovery and understanding especially in regards to exoplanets (and ultimately SETI in general) every day it seems.
Excellent comment and very refreshingly, devoid of any grammatical or spelling mistake, in contrast that is with the majority of English speaking people whose writing blunders are very common.
Now a thought of my own. It has been noted by some people in the written comments, that a two way interstellar conversation may take decades or centuries to reach each other. A very valid point. But could it not be that a superior civilazation to ours, could put the beam of light which is carrying informations ment to reach us, through a worm hole therofore reaching us at a fraction of the time? My reasoning is that even for them perhaps, putting a intergalactic space ship through a warm hole would be an impossible task.. But a beam of light? Maybe just maybe!!!

"we are not alone..." This statement is false. We have not found any proof of life outside that of our own planet.
I don't mean to sound harsh. You're comment is cool and I respect you POV, but definitively saying "we are not alone" at this point of our discoveries is not scientific.

@@jonkallas7326 Thanks for the comment; appreciated and respected. When I say "we are not alone", of course that is not being scientific nor is it supported by a lack of tangible or empirical facts or data. This is of course my opinion and belief.
What I base my opinion on is of research that has been done on earth with regard to life in general; of the various extreme and extraordinary low temperature, pressure, and environmental conditions scientists have already found life on earth, and my understanding of the Drake Equation.
And of my early teen childhood interests in astronomy and the universe. And while the Mars Meteorite, ALH84001 is still under revue and scrutiny of having micro organisms imbedded within the rock, it is without a doubt the most compelling evidence of planetary evidence we have yet of the potential of exoplanetary life beyond our own solar system.
Given the fact since my teenage childhood, I had already made the assertion that planet do in fact orbit around distant stars, then later confirmed, and scientific evidence of planets with potentially habitable conditions on them, it is no longer a stretch of the imagination to extrapolate the belief that life is perhaps far more ubiquitous in nature that not.
This is to say, I have the firm belief that life as we know it is not unique to earth but in fact quite regular in regions favoring habitable-environmental conditions that favor life. While it may be a stretch to say there is intelligent life, this has yet to be proven.
But to say that life; whether micro-organisms to something similar to pre-history life exists, I have to say it is far more likely that life does exists.
While we are still far away from verifying or proving this, I again have absolutely no doubt in my mind that life exists, and it exists all across the universe where conditions permit it to thrive.
I think it is better to come to grips with this potential reality than to continue to say we are unique; it would be arrogant to keep thinking along this line. And once scientists begin to reach further and further into space, I am certain they will be shocked and surprised by the findings.
My only regret in life is to know that I will likely no live long enough for my belief to be validated and confirmed.

Pretty much only gonna work for chess. Like... generational chess. Like our chess master makes a move, then _their_ chess master makes a move, then our chess master's great-granddaughter makes a move, and so forth. Our luck, they just so happen to live for like 1,200 years on average, so to them it's like no big.
i really dislike that he doesnt mention that even for "small" distances like lets say 100 lightyears, this implies a ping of 200years minimum. The communication can barely called communication. yea its a long shot ... a very long shot.
Mostly earth is on its own. We're all selfish people, whom are giving free will , as the angels are actually physical beings from another world. They are many diverse physical aliens. This is written in Ezekiel chapter one. Ezekiel describes a round craft that flew back and forth like lightning. Not like a bat or a bird. The UFO, is big and has a cristal dome over the top. People are given the opportunity to make the best of it.
By the time you send the message, its so far away the people you sent it too have been dead for thousands of years.the planet may not even exist anymore.it takes that long for light to reach us.the thought is just mind blowing .....

We are watching them in the past, and the further away we are from each other, the more distant is that past. A star 40 light-years away will have sent its light (that we see today) back in 1979. So... if we find a planet that has the potential to host (intelligent) life, and that planet is 100 light-years distant, any laser message sent to them would have a 200 year round-trip journey before we got any response.
So... inviting them over for tea - one would have to advise them that (assuming they could travel to us at lightspeed) when they arrived, they would be enjoying a cuppa with our great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandchildren...
Exactly. Any conversation using light beam or in this case laser light would take 100 years on a one way trip. Waiting for a reply would take 200 years. So, we can send out messages now and our great grand children may receive a reply. Food for thought.
I came on to here to comment about this problem too.
Interstellar communication between any worlds, even if only a single light year away, would be extremely painful due to this immense lag. Gamers complain of lag measured in milliseconds. I guess we won't be playing Fortnite with our galactic neighbours any time soon. Lol.

Yep, interesting vid, though likewise surprised that issue didn't come up. And it really seems to be the ultimate problem with civilizations ever contacting each other... either they eventually figure out a tech solution to exceeding the speed of light, or there simply isn't one. In which case every civilization, no matter how advanced, is perpetually isolated to their respective 'islands' by the immense distances and time required for anything to cross 'em.
Or else there is a solution, but it's so beyond our science now, that a whole interstellar 'community' could be going on all around us... yet like tv signals in medieval times, we wouldn't have a clue.

Show me evidence of a species similar to us that didn't make it because "they weren't doing so well" but from another planet, not Earth. You can't, because there is no other life like us, but here on Earth. in other words there is NO benchmark to grade our performance by.

I would argue we are doing pretty good actually. We are past the nuclear scare of the cold war, we survived world war 2 and 1, we survived countles plagues over the centuries. We are at a time of peace, this is the most peaceful the planet has ever been (humans) we have the least amount of mass hungar (not perfect but better then any other time in history) we are actually doing pretty good.

I believe the Moon is inhabited by Angels used as sort of an Antenna, observing and recording everything we’re doing. Within the earth is another Sun which is covered by clouds of smoke which emanate a certain warmth and electrical charge allowing all life forms there to grow larger and live longer. Some say the center of this Sun is the throne of God. The biggest mystery of Bible is where are the 10 tribes of Israel that went North and never heard from again? I believe they were lead North into the Naval of the earth and they live with other inhabitants in magnificent cities built out pure gold and all other precious metals. The creatures, animals, plants, fruits etc are a lot more purée and larger than average. The electrical charge elongates your spine allowing humans there to enjoy better breathing and much much better sleep. Back to the 10 tribes though, yeah I believe They assist Gods angels with monitoring and protecting the earth and those of us living on the surface of it in one way or another. But it does say in the last days the ice will melt and the 10 tribes of Israel will come out and save America as it hangs by a thread. But I believe every planet is hollow. Of course we are being watched. Earthlings are in the prime time comedy slot and each year the ratings get higher. Its like the Simpsons (well pre season 8) only funnier. I seriously expect the first televised alien landing to be from the Milky Way Comedy Awards for best sitcom.
@@snarkylive Yeah wont be long for us now, probably within my lifetime way things are going. I lived through the height of it in the UK in the 80's, at school being shown Threads and even getting leaflets from the government to tell us about what to do when nuclear war starts (Live about 30 miles from central London so will be over quick at least) to now find we are closer to midnight on the doomsday clock now than back then, so sadly unless we drastically change our ways and try to cooperate rather than compete we will soon become just a footnote to maybe be dug up by alien archaeologists thousands of years in the future wondering what did us in and how can they avoid it.

@@infinitemonkey917 I would like to see verifiable proof of this, because usually all I can find on the internet is some scientists that have an agenda to push. Of course we can affect the planet, but not at a scale where it really matters. Of course our emissions would go up since the start of the industrial revolution but at a level where it is fatal? No. The thing is, the Earth is never stable. Its temperature is always changing, its position is always changing, and its core is active. If the Earth moves a few centimeters a certain way it shouldn't, th entire planet can change in temperature by a few degrees. Its just how the Earth was born, it may seem like it, but planets shift over time because there is never a perfect orbit. Because of this, the planet can heat up or freeze on its own, and that is proven easily. If the planet is heating up or freezing on its own, there is literally nothing we can do about it. I dont usually trust the same scientists who claimed the world was going to end in 2012, or the scientists that say we have 12 months to live, because that is nothing more than a scam. Even if you are right though, even if we are killing the planet on such fatal levels, what will be done about it? There is nothing you can do. If anything, China is producing the most, so what are you going to do? Tell China to stop expanding?

If we sent a "laser signal" to Wolf 47b, it would take more than 600 years for them to see it, correct? Any response they sent would take another 600 years to reach us. 1,200 years just to say hello.

Having conversations within the milky way will be very difficult. Even more difficult would be traveling to their location.

Very thought provoking indeed. Timing is important in trying to communicate. Another idea is to use for example GRBs. When you detect a GRB in one direction you send signals in the opposite direction so that when all the astronomers on a far away planet are looking at the GRB they also pick up signals from us.

I just discovered this channel.....and I adore it already.
Watched a couple videos so far.
For one, you have such a great VOICE for this. And on top of that you clearly have the knowledge.
But I also love how...idk, soothing it all is? It's weirdly comforting to be reminded of the immensity of reality. At least by you. SUB-SCRIBED! :)
I can't think of a better channel nor a better person to teach us about our cosmos .

I just watched this episode today for the first time. I think we finally have someone on the right path to find a true alien signature and led us into the future. This episode actually gave me goosebumps with his final sentence. Just amazing!!
Thank you for all your great content, I always learn a lot from your channel. Could we have already pick up on these kind of signals, you mentioned in this video (ie Tabby star)? The signature light patterns are highly unusual in nature. Perturbation in a Stars behavior is an other method (as you know) in detecting planetary orbits. Could a combination of these two methods render more information (along w/ light spectrum emissions).
Excellent overview of the transit method of detecting exoplanets and the mathematics of mutually aligned exoplanets . Very interesting and worthwhile video. One problem with using this as a communication means is the time factor; perhaps decades for each round of dialogue. Many thanks for the links to the papers and other videos.

Interesting topic. The sad part is we could be talking about a conversation that takes a very long to communicate. If we started today it may be 100 years before it was received and another 100 before we detected a response. Maybe we get lucky and get one that is only 10 or 20 ly away and we can have a response within a lifetime.
Not that it isn't worth doing. Just that it may be something that isn't realized until several generations from now.

The Black Knight Satellite could just be a piece of space debris, an asteroid in low Earth orbit. However it being an alien probe observing Earth isn’t out of the question yet just like Oumuamua which could have very well been an alien probe passing through the Solar System.

Great video but interesting as this concept is, I think it's highly dubious too - firstly a signature of life in no way guarantees intelligent, technologically advanced life capable of the kind of modulation of their transit signal that you are talking about - secondly, any such modulation, even if by some extremely unlikely chance it did happen between two worlds, would take hundreds of years between each reception and response - Given the extent of our technological advances in just the last one hundred years, do you really think we'll be fooling around with such primitive signalling many hundreds of years from now? I sincerely doubt it. It would be like us communicating with smoke signals to the guys in the next valley. We don't do that anymore ☺

More like pre-civ hunter gatherers. The galaxy is only 100k light years across. So at most, they're only seeing back a few 10s of thousands of years ago.

I pondered this question earlier tonight. I was fortunate enough to be in a very dark sky area in Scotland and just sat there and looked up for a good hour. So many stars just to the naked eye and I thought "I wonder if even one of them has a planet with something gazing toward us"....
Great video as always! I guess this technique would only work for planets that are relatively close? If a planet is 1000 light years away, does it mean we'll have to wait 1000 years for them to recieve our message?
It's not enough that we're all being watched by NSA, those darn aliens are watching us too :)
