Are you set on making your own side covers? Sharing info for another options if interested. 2nd gen covers(99-07) Can be fit to your 1st gen vlx(88-98) very simply with a factory style look and feel once installed with very minor modifications. Serves the bike well since you are running a solo seat now and have the oem seat/fender cowel deleted.

For right now I am. Unless it proves to be too challenging.
I did the same thing with my 93 using the 2nd gen covers. It wasnt too difficult and it doesnt look too bad.
