The easiest and best way to refill 1lb propane bottles

  • This video is a follow up to the first video that I made showing how I refill a 1 lb propane bottle. After posting that video, some discussion was initiated as to whether the method that I used was the most efficient. Although I was aware that you could manipulate the valve to allow for more space for propane to transfer I do not use that method because it is one more step and sometimes it can be hard to reach the valve when you are filling. I was also concerned with the possibility of over filling and expansion that can occur with temperature change. I was aware of the valve could be manipulated during refilling however, I was not aware that is the sole purpose of it. I erroneously called it a relief valve. After weighing a new and empty bottle I found that there is approximately 1 lb of propane in a new bottle. Using the one step easy method that I showed in my first video resulted in the bottle only being filled 3/4 full. I thought it was fair that I show both methods so that the viewer can decide which method they want to use, the easy or the best.

My grandpa used to have a tractor converted to propane. We filled it without a pump by opening a pressure relief valve on the tractor tank until liquid started coming out. One detail about refilling those bottles, people may tell you it is illegal. It isn’t illegal to refill them but it is against DOT regulations to transport a refilled bottle on the highway. I don’t know how anyone could tell unless you waived your 4th Amendment Right and confessed. Thanks for the video Terry. I’ve been refilling 1lb. bottles for years. Of course I’d never transport a refilled one. 😉

@@TRERUNSWILD you can remove the tag on a mattress if you are the consumer, it says it on there. plus you can get a bit more lp in your tank by using a small allen key in the opening instead of pulling the Schrader valve, it does the same thing. if your empty weight is 13oz and a pound is 16 you after weight would be 29oz if over you press on the opening a few times to desired weight.

Thanks for the video. Not sure what you mean about the valve. It is an overpress device. If the bottle gets too hot the excess propane will vent through the valve due to pressure and that is its purpose. It just so happens to be a means to get more propane in the bottle because venting off the propane cools the bottle allowing more to go in. I would recommend like you not to mess with the overpress valve. Leave it alone. Another failure point to worry about. Freeze the bottle alone in my experience fills completely and can actually overfill it as well if the 20 pounder is fairly full. Be safe!

I can personally attest that it is possible to overfill these tanks by either method you demonstrated. I know this because I have done it . This can occur under ideal conditions, which I would say is a full 20 lbder on a hot day. These tanks, and for that matter any propane tank are designed to be filled to 80% to allow for expansion in the heat without excessive pressure.Gas compresses, liquid propane will not, and the result of a severely overfilled 1 lb tank will be a bulging tank(yup, I did this) or worse.I see you weigh each tank and that is the correct thing to do every time you fill a tank. Never put more than 1 lb of gas in an empty tank.I have used just about every method that has been thought of, but in the end I weigh each tank so I know exactly how much I've put in it and if I'm over by more than the smallest amount, I just bleed it off by popping the top valve. I never felt comfortable messing with the side valve so I left them alone. I agree with you that if your getting a tank 3/4 full using your quick( and in my opinon safest) method I pesonally would be happy with that. Three most important things I'd recommend:1-do it outside, period. If some goes wrong there will be super cold propane spraying all over the place. 2-weigh your tanks ,just as you did. 3-always check for leaks and if you get one pop the valve a couple times and that will usually reseat it.Thanks for your video.

Start with a totally empty bottle. Then you have to weigh them prior and after filling just to be certain. The difference must be less than 1 lb to feel safe. If overfilled, you have to let some out (slowly outside away from anything to ignite) prior to use. It does waste propane if you keep overfilling them - but practice makes perfect.

I go to a local hardware and supply store and get a full 20lb fill in the same tank like you for 5 or 6 dollars less than the Walmart swap where as you say you get only 15 lbs. The nice thing about Walmart though is if you have an old completely rusty tank with no hope of recertification thay will swap it for a good filled(by their standards) full tank. The people there just don't care. I swapped a couple that looked like they'd been on the bottom of the ocean for ten years, no problemo. But as I understand it even a 20lb tank with 20lbs of gas in it will stil be only 80% full . All modern 20 lb tanks come with a float valve on the inside to prevent more than that to be put into the tank. I heat my house with gas and I have a 120 gallon tank which is never filled to more than 100 gallons for that reason as explaned to me by the service guy.Cheers.

The method that i use, i get a full tank all the time...you have to cool your tank before filling (not in the freezer method)...what you do is screw your small tank on the big one, then open the valve for 3 seconds and close it...then remove the small tank and with a pen just purge the tank from the screwtop not the release valve for 5 seconds.(keep your gloves on)... and that cools the inside of the tank better then the freezer method ...then refill your tank normally and you will have a full tank and maybe a little more (maybe 1.985 to 2.0 which is ok)

you should add a piece of hose between the adapter and the empty so you can stand the empty up right to get a proper fill. open the relief valve while filling and when liquid comes out its full. gravity makes the liquid go to the bottom of the tank.if you hold the tank sideways and the valve is at the bottom you get liquid before its full, also you risk over filling with it sideways . you are better off holding the empty vertical and the full sideways if you dont have a hose or a 90degree adapter

If you set your large tank upside down on a level surface, screw the small tank on until the relief valve is in a consistent position ( think of a clock face ) and you hold it open with your forceps and put liquid in until liquid escapes through the relief valve, you will get the same amount of liquid each time. You just need to determine where the position is, on the clock face, that equals 1 pound of liquid in your small tank. Hold that little valve open for the whole fill cycle, don't fill, vent, fill, vent, etc. and be ready to shut off the big tank as soon as you see liquid coming out of the small tank. I do this all the time and, because I have my empty tanks marked with their empty weights, I can check them after filling and I am consistently within 2/10 oz. Another thing you need to be aware of is that the tanks will weight different amounts when empty, especially from one brand to another, but also within the same brand. Part of that is because some tanks have a plastic rim on their bottoms to help them stand upright (the tanks themselves are all rounded on the bottom because spheres contain gasses better) and others weld on a steel rim, so weigh each empty tank and mark it for future reference.

How are you going to over-pressure the 1# bottle? The 1# bottle and the 20# bottle have the same pressure rating. You’re equalizing the two bottles when doing a refill. Fully depressurize the 1# bottle to create the max differential pressure. When you equalize the inverted 20# bottle with the 1# bottle you end up transferring the maximum liquid mass. And there’s a safety valve on the bottles. Science. Blaise Pascal made a law to help explain it.

@@OttawaMikes - Propane tanks shouldn't be filled more than about 80% to allow for expansion. Liquid propane boils at a very low temperature (phase change from liquid to vapor) and an over-filled tank can explode on a hot summer day because it has nowhere to expand as it goes through that phase change. This is even more probable with over-filled disposable tanks because they have a thinner wall than refillable tanks and can't withstand the pressure.

I have done both methods. Screw the tank in to the coupler connection to the propane tank. Turn it upside down, open the propane valve, listen to hear the tank fill. When the filling sound stops use forceps, to open the side valve SET in the TWO o'clock position. When propane squirts out the tank is full. Now the easy method. Put the empty cylinder in the freezer, letting it sit for half an hour. Then take it out, attach it to the propane tank. Turn the tank upside down, and open the valve, for two minutes or so. And the tank will be full, and in some cases an ounce or so more than full. But there is still enough air space in tanks to keep the tank safe. BTW: The side valve serves as a safety valve to release internal pressure with these canisters if they are overheated, thus preventing a canister from rupturing. The side valve is not for filling the canister. The canisters are company filled from the center valve.

yes , they are designed to release liquid when 80% full , thats why its important to stand the empty in the proper upright position for filling . fiilling on its side causes it to not function properly and can result in overfilling , which is very dangerous . if you get a proper refill adapter you see it allows the empty to stand upright and has a fill valve that has to be held open so it can be closed as soon as its full , again to prevent over filling

There is no air inside propane tanks, unless you pressurized then with air. It is simply propane in its gas form. When people say that they are opening the valve to let out the pressure, they are really not doing much. As long as there is propane in its liquid state inside a sealed container the pressure will remain relatively the same, provided that the ambient temperature does not change.
To make a long story short the best way to get a full charge is to have the 20 lbs tank upsides own and the 1lb tank right side up. This can be achieved with a 90 • elbow or a hose. Then you can open the relieve to let out some of the gas in order to make room for the liquid.

Yes. Empty tanks are filled with nitrogen...not air. If you let air into your propane tank, they you must have it purged by a professional. People who leave their tanks outside open after a very short time will have moisture in the tank that must be removed. Very few places will purge your 'Dad's old' propane tank and those that do charge a fee almost as much as a new tank. This has been my experience.

I would personally buy the refillable cylinder and kit, cost more but at least your insurance is not void if they find you went against the warning on the side of the bottle "do not to refill" and the fines available by DOT if transported or valve found leaking not designed for re use.

You can bleed the air out of the Schrader valve in the neck too. It's much easier that way because you're just pressing down on the pin, like on tires. ...and since just pressing down, the pin stays straight. ..also, the pressure in the bottle will help seal the valve shut that way and the pressure works against the valve if you breach that vent Schrader valve. I find it's best to leave that vent alone. But do check them both with soapy water. I like to completely dunk the whole bottle in a bucket of soapy water to check the whole bottle for leaks while ridding it of that foul odor of propane that's left after filling. It's also a good idea to reinspect the 2 Schrader valves after a half hour or so. Lots of times you wont notice a leak but when you recheck it, you'll notice a foam plug coming out of one or two valves. Finally, people need to know that propane is a HTA gas (heavier than air). When it leaks, it settles in low areas . you won't smell it but you could be wading in it. Its good to do it outdoors and no smoking. It might seem ok until you toss your butt on the ground to stomp it out. If doing this indoors, I would say that a well vented area would include forced air from a fan blowing across the floor to the outside. ..things like pilot lights from water heaters or furnaces could just be waiting for the level of propane to rise up to ignite it. ...this has been a public service announcement.. ;^)

I don't know why I should have to say this; Your are not releasing trapped air from within the cannister. It is vaporized propane, the stuff you burn when using the tank. There has to be a vapor space in the tank to convert the liquid propane to a gas. Always! and that is why the 1lb cannisters are meant to be used vertically.

    • @jdog4534

@@jdog4534 You know about propane and air but you are still hanging on to the theory that is it air present in the tank. It is not air, it is propane vapor, and yes exhausting some propane vapor will allow you to put more liquid propane into the tank, however there is really no advantage. All that said, you and I have an understanding of liquid and gaseous properties of propane, BUT many or your viewers will not, and it is imperative that you speak clearly to the viewers.

    • @jdog4534
      @jdog4534 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@SuperJellicoeapparently you've never refilled these 1 lb propane bottles.. when you buy them new, they come with one pound of propane in them. You will never get a pound of propane back in them from another tank without bleeding them off once after its been equalized with the filling tank. When you bleed it off, the stuff that comes out first is clear and has little propane smell. I bleed it for 8 seconds then back to be equalized again that brings it to a pound. +/- depending on how much is left in fill tank.
Another thing I recommend is to get a brass screw cap with a rubber gasket on it keep on the bottom until you're going to use it in case it leaks a little bit or something... .. also, if you're using it somewhere those little buddy heaters it holds two propane bottles, always have two propane bottles on there when you're using it even if one's empty. In case there's is leak out of the port or something like that.. it won't leak if there's a bottle screwed onto it.

Please don't use forceps on the "safety pop-off" valve on the side of your 1lb. tank you will damage it and they tend not to reseat properly after doing that. (ask me how I know?)
There are much better and safer ways to "purge" the air and excess fumes from the top of a 1# pound bottle, So what is the better way you ask?
Instead of using forceps use a small Allen wrench or even a small wooden stick to avoid a spark ? Then depress the Schrader valve in the center of the tank be sure to use your scale to weigh it in order to keep from "overfilling it".. (while wearing your PPE right?)
Plus also note that it is actually "illegal" to transport refilled bottles which are designed to be "disposable." by their manufacturer..in this case Coleman,

If the lable said GROSS weight then it would be the steel bottle and contents combined.
I know it is not easy to make these videos. That is why I have not posted mine. But this is awkward and clumsy. With 2x too much talk. Imprecise talk.
If you would get one open end wrench of the right size and keep it with your propane equipment, it would tend to smooth out part of your presentation.

As mentioned there’s a safety valve on the 20 pound tank that senses fast release of propane gas and shuts off. Open it slowly and that should solve the problem. Tre, my friend you are dangerous.
[My qualifications - I am a nationally registered LP Service Technician, Bulk LP Transfer Technician and registered Cylinder Inspector.
    i.e - I know what I am talking about.]
The very first 'error' you demonstrated (and there are many) was performing the refill inside a wired structure.
Folks - DO NOT EVER DO THAT - take it far outside!
Tre, What are you planning to do with a bottle/s that has a leaking/jammed valve and is/are spewing LP all over and cannot be plugged?
Run it/them out the open door tripping the light sensor on the garage door operator, causing a spark in the motor housing and
lighting the whole world (as you know it) on fire - or worse?
There is a reason for the $500,000 or Five Years in Jail for refilling 'Non-Refillable' bottles.
Sooner or later everyone's luck runs out and other people are harmed or killed!
Although you have the most rudimentary concept of how to refill a depleted "Non-Refillable" LP bottle,
you are flying by the seat of your pants and "Learning as you go"!
It is not a good thing to produce instructional videos on potentially lethal topics of which one is not fully competent.
I highly suggest you take a National LP Cylinder Inspection/Recertification Technician class and get your own RIN number.
Contact the National Propane Gas Association for instruction locations and registration. It is very likely they are offering classes in your vicinity.
    Also you should become very familiar with the terms Rate of Expansion; Net, Tare & Gross Weights; Wetted Surface Area;
the reason for the 'space above the liquid'; and Boyle's Law!
Only then you may have the competency to produce videos on a topic that has the potential to harm or kill people.

I can't believe anyone would do anything like this anywhere within 15 feet of their enclosed garage, house, shed, etc. If one of those 'one use' bottles has valve problem, that gas is going to go everywhere. Imagine taking the bottle off and the valve isn't closed. Will you be quick enough to screw it back onto the adapter to stop the leak? Are you going to toss it out the garage door like a grenade? You should thank your lucky stars that nothing happened. Just saying.

Well, I'm two feet from an exterior door. Have three large overhead doors open with a cross breeze. Its a one pound cylinder. I'm not worried at all. We are not dealing with a 1" pipe it's a micro hole for release in worst case scenario. I'm not standing next to an open flame. IDK, Maybe all the gas line breaks I've responded to over all the years has just calloused me.

Consider switching the scale to ounces. Try using needle nose pliers to relieve any excess air rather than the little valve, especially while filling. With the idea being to continue refilling the tank, use of that valve increases the likelihood of leaks as it's known to stick. In the future, i intend to follow your advice regarding gloves, so thank you.
On a side note, and i get this is ingrained into us so deeply it can be difficult to root out of our vocabulary, but "Gravity" is more than just a 500 year old unproven theory regarding real terms such as density and buoyancy. What it is is complete and utter nonsense. It is not real. Thank your favorite Jesuit for that tid bit of lunacy.
Remember, the physics of fluids dictate that liquids like water always find level. They always have and always will because facts are all about truth and therefore hold no regard for one's intelligence, much less our feelings about being lied to. Clearly our Earth is Not flat. No different than "gravity" such ideas are idiocy. Obviously there are countless differing degrees both above and below the sea that are platted on land surveys all across the face of this place.
While the earth (dirt) is clearly Not flat, the water surrounding all the land upon which we stand absolutely is flat level, like the sea. Even children know that water on a ball wouldn't look like that at all.
Truly, i suggest to you that every toddler to have ever graduated from a sippy cup had to demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the physics of fluids first. Many of them are still wetting the bed on occasion, yet don't seem to struggle with common sense.
"It don't make much sense that common sense don't make much sense no more" ~ John Prine

Don't feel bad, this kind of knowledge never makes it onto the Tell lie Vision. The good news is the younger generation is becoming aware of the lies they teach in the public indoctrination system. 1) Max fill "Legally" on ANY propane cylinder is 80% This is to allow for Vapor Expansion when a cylinder warms up! DANGEROUS Doing THIS!!!
    2) Cheaper to simply by the adapter that fits to the 20#, 30#, or 40# Cylinder. You can connect the adapter to a propane rated hose on the adapter end and on the other is yet another adapter(brass fitting) that fits those 1# bottles hence you can use the bigger cylinders without the Hassle OR Dangers of transferring the propane at all! I have and use said hose mentioned above for multiple devices including a Coleman camping stove!
