  • Hey fellow sonic explorers! Today, let's dive into the mesmerizing world of ambient reverbs and compare two titans in the pedal realm: the ‪@MerisUs‬ Mercury X Modular Reverb and the ‪@walrusaudioeffects‬ Slöer Ambient Reverb. What makes these pedals even more exciting? They're both stellar in stereo, creating expansive sonic landscapes that envelop you in a three-dimensional tapestry. 🎶✨
    🌌 *Meris Mercury X Modular Reverb: Expansive Sonic Vistas* 🚀
    The Meris Mercury X invites you into a cosmic playground of reverberation possibilities, now in stunning stereo. Its modular design allows for deep customization, making it an ideal choice for those who crave sonic exploration in a wide soundstage. From lush halls to ethereal shimmer and so much more, this stereo pedal is a dream for synth and guitar players pushing the boundaries of ambient expression. 🎛️💫
    🌊 *Walrus Slöer Ambient Reverb: Immediacy meets Atmosphere* 🌅
    On the other side of the ambient spectrum, we have the Walrus Slöer, a pedal that thrives on immediacy and responsiveness, now enhanced in stereo glory. While it may not have the modular complexity of the Mercury X, the Slöer excels in delivering lush, ambient textures with a more straightforward interface, spreading its atmospheric bliss across the stereo spectrum. Perfect for guitarists seeking instant immersive experiences, the Slöer provides a quick route to sonic landscapes that bloom and evolve with every note. 🎸🌈
    🔄 *Comparing the Vibes* 🔍
    When pitting these two against each other in the stereo realm, it's like comparing the vastness of interstellar space (Meris) to the immersive beauty of a sunset (Walrus), now with the added dimension of a widened soundstage. The Mercury X beckons the sonic cosmonauts, while the Slöer offers a quick passport to ambient realms for those who crave immediate sonic gratification, all in glorious stereo. 🌌🌅🔊

    Great video, very enjoyable. I like the Mercury X so much. Sloer is truly fantastic, because it has no menu diving. Both are great dreams.

      Thank you so much! You’re absolutely right! The Slöer is more immediate with no menus to navigate (although I wish all the secondary functions were labeled so I didn’t have to look them up!) The Mercury X is a tweakers dream! Or a fantastic choice if you can only have 1 reverb!

    Thank You! Sloer is my next purchase! It has what I've been trying to get with other reverb's. It would be nice to match the Mercury X with my LVX but would spend most of the time trying to get what the SLoer does with ease! I already have the Ventris, NightSky, CloudBurst, H9 Max (and both version's of the Mood) so many option's of type's of reverb BUT the Sloer fit's my ambient fusion direction... Great job showing them both (do what I'm looking for... the textured/musical trail).

      Some folks just have a “thing”. Maybe your thing is delay. Maybe it’s reverb. Maybe it’s fuzz. That’s the best of it all. It’s all so personal. What do you think might be your thing?

    Excellent demo and comparison. Was wondering, at 6:07, why did you have to track the knobs? I thought that when you save a preset on the Sloer, it remembers the knob placement and mode. Not sure you have to manually switch everything back, otherwise, you're really not saving the sound. Just curious.

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I did that so you could know where those settings were on the Slöer, in case you wanted to replicate them. You are correct in that you don’t have to move the knobs to use a preset! Great question though!!!

    I love Walrus and Meris, have five Walrus pedals and the Meris LVX. In terms of sheer depth, I don't think anything can top the LVX/Mercury X (which I plan to get soon). The Sloer (and all Walrus pedals) sounds superb, and has a more immediate hands on approach. The Meris stuff is more for heavy, intensive sound design, which makes it so powerful with an endless diversity of sound. But, you have to enjoy working that way, you can tweak and go using the front panel controls, but that's not where the real strength lies. I love the graphical interface on the LVX/Mercury X, makes navigating the complex structures as intuitive as it could be, BUT Meris just released an Editor/Librarian for LVX that makes intense, deep sound design much much easier (as well as patch organizing/saving/backup). It will be coming for Mercury X in the future as well, they haven't given a time line other that to say it's next.

    Great comparision, thanks. I have the Mercury X and the LVX, and I've ordered a Slöer. I cottoned on to the LVX very quickly, but like a lot of "multifunction" pedals the presets aren't great... you really need to jump in and tweak... and as a *reverb* the Mercury X is the same... I find it is it real work to get reverb sounds that I love. And none of the great non-ambient sounds that I get from the UAFX Golden have yet been bettered by the Mercury X, but I'll keep at it. I also really like the tacticle aspect of the Slöer, and the sounds are magnificent with little mucking around.
    I think you did a nice job trying to cop the Slöer presets on the Mercury X, but the EQ is different and timbre is more metallic sounding... not sure you can precisely EQ that out or not. Still on the shelf about the Mercury X as I wrote although the feature set is terrific.

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The best way I’ve found to “EQ” either the LVX or MercuryX is by using the filters.
      With both the LVX and MX I find myself only using presets I’ve made. I’ve cleared out all the rest. Nothing against them, they’re just not…mine, you know?

    I’m a bit confused. Setting to “no dry” is quite different from the walrus on “full wet”, without killing the dry, no?

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not 100% sure what you’re asking, can you say more?
      I may have been using those interchangeably, and in this case (between the Mercury X and Slöer) I think that’s ok. “No dry” = “full wet”.
      However I could be wrong, and in some cases, when the analog dry path stays analog and isn’t converted to digital, it would be a different thing, no?
      Maybe I’m confusing things more. I hope not. 😂

    Thanks for the demo! Great tones! Owned the SLOER for a bit, added it to my TONEX rig. The sounds are absolutely stunning, unfortunately, I could not get rid of digital clipping from the SLOER. Played my rig through a few different systems, and had the same issue, no matter what. Put the SLOER in different places within my chain, as well. Had to have the SLOER effect volume down so low, that you could barely hear the effects, and that was the only way I could get rid of the digital clipping. Sold it and purchasing the Mercury X now. Own the LVX and that is an incredible unit, just on its own!

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey thanks! Once I get the Slöer back from my buddy I can.
      I didn’t initially do those settings because the Dark is (simply put) the opposite of Light, with an octave down and not up and since the MercX does Light you just change the octave in there to get to the Dark territory. I know, an oversimplification.
      The Rise setting would use the Auto-Swell feature in the Dynamics block on the MercX. Not necessarily a simply one to recreate, but Rise isn’t one I connect with which is why I didn’t make it.
      That said, I can add it to my list :)

      @THOMANDTHEWOLVES very good descriptions, and yes, I note those as well. I find the Slöer to be more immediate, but the Mercury X to be more specific in its tweakability. Now the million dollar question is reasoning as to choosing one over the other the other

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So the answer to that question is going to look different for every single one of us, and there's no wrong answer either! If you were to want a reverb with a couple presets, simple and easy controls, and something only in the ambient reverb category, I'd say the Sloer. If you wanted a one-size-fits-all reverb that gives you the ambient sounds as well as the classic reverb sounds with lots of tweakability and presets and midi, then the Mercury X all the way!
      Another way to look at it is to determine what elements are most important. In these categories, here's who I think wins.
      Presets: Mercury X
      Smaller Footprint: Sloer
      Ease of Use: Sloer
      Unlimited sound options: Mercury X
      Midi: Mercury X
      Price: Sloer
      Warmth: Sloer
      Fidelity: Mercury X
      If it helps to know which of the 2 I kept, I sold the Sloer to a buddy...

Recently I became if fan of walrus for the same reason, and well I’m a sucker for the little “I love you “ insert they include in the pedals. Yup I guess good advertising works. I need to be more patient with the mercury x for sure . It does sound great out the box but I can’t help but think about a combination of the golden reverberator merely for its natural sounding verb and the sloer. Probably GAS talking hahahaha

    • @thepedalcollaborative
      @thepedalcollaborative  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @empathysgone96 GAS or practicality. Not everyone needs all the options on the MercuryX. Not everyone will utilize it to a greater potential. If I only wanted a specific reverb sound I’d hunt for the best of that one sound. I like the MercX (and LVX) because it’s Sound Design territory and that excites me…but I spend more time creating sounds than playing live. I’m perfectly ok with that.
