He severely undervalued his company. He had 1M turnover and 400k profit last year and only valued his company at 500k. Also had 500k cash in the bank, can’t believe they even tried to negotiate the percentage with him 🤯
It’s covered in the episode. It’s not about the cash infusion, it’s about the sponsorship, promotion, and acceleration
I think Peter half jokingly played into his Freudian slip. But yeah even with the argument of having a dragons expertise and connection he certainly undervalued his own company.
It's a one hit wonder
Because he is not looking for investment, he is looking for partnership, and that is not about the valuation.
Straight up equity investment "silent partner" "Angel investor" putting up money with no input would be appropriate to go on actual market value on a company. However when you are investing and also providing resources time and effort, a dragon actually provides a lot of worth and value so that naturally gets priced in to the deal.
You could own 100% of a small pond worth £2000 current value, but own 80% of an ocean valued at £1,000,000 what would you rather have? This is what a lot of entrepreneurs forget when they walk away from a deal. Sometimes they are right to, but sometimes I think some may think in hindsight wish they took the deal.
You know your pitch is going good when:
1. Jenny praises it but also declares herself out
2. The other Dragons start describing their own backgrounds to you

I've been binging episodes of Dragon's Den, wondering if I'll ever find an episode where Jenny makes an offer. It's like looking for water in a desert, and this episode was a mirage.

Why is she even there
I've seen two where she makes an offer then withdraws it after the entrepreneur didn't immediately accept her offer and continued to talk to the other dragons.
This just clearly demonstrates Deborah's authenticity, honesty, pure heart and genuine care for the environment. She didn't try to 'pull the wool over his eyes', she was just very honest. And she cares more about cleaning up the environment than having a bigger chunk in equity. I'm so happy for him and her. Having said this, if I was the dude, I would have actually accepted Peter + Deborah. With both of them together, it would have propelled this business further and much quicker... - just for the sake of another 10% equity. It doesn't really matter, they're all going to become rich out of it, anyway...
Yeah I agree. Especially if he's offering essential supply chain services for free. Would have been a nice decrease in overhead. I don't know how much that usually costs though :p

The offer he pitched was fair. He stated the business had £500k in the bank, with a revenue of £1m and a profit of £400k. I believe Peter was just being greedy, the business is worth more than £350k.

As an American, this is my first Dragon's Den viewing. It is so different than our similar show, Shark Tank.
In Dragon's Den:
1. No one interrupts anyone
2. The dragons are able to take a turn to get their offer out
3. No one rushes the guy to make a decision on which offer to choose
4. No one makes any jokes :(
5. The dragons don't ask very many questions
I cant watch Shark tank because of the arguing amongst investors.
I absolutely hate that about Shark Tank. They're always always ALWAYS rushing them to accept the offer or not. It's so frustrating. Especially freaking Kevin.

Entrepreneur accidentally offers 25%. Peter Jones 8 minutes later says "I want 25%".
I think Peter thought he slipped up on the maximum he can give, because people do come on dragons den with a limit they are willing to give away, so Peter was like heck let's go for the maximum he can go to and see what happens 🤣
It was a trick. He did that because he knew some dragons would automatically go for that “maximum” and his business was very investable. Then the other dragons would have to go lower ultimately to what he wanted, negotiation is a game of chess, he let them think they had the upper hand…
Deb was straight forward and transparent with what she could provide, that's probably why this smart lad choose her.
I think he could've absolutely negotiated with Peter + Deborah for a lower percentage, like 17% and they still would've agreed to it. I've never seen a dragon be SO happy when their offer gets accepted.

I love this guy, he went with his heart and Deborahs ethics over Mr money bags. Peter's face at the end, loooooool.
It's not just "his heart", Every dragon wanted to be the investor, and in cases like these it's not unlikely that dragons are opposed to share (Peter being the oldest is the one with the most examples), so Deborah went with the best deal for a free-for-all, even if it was at a loss for her (since she COULD have matched Tej's instead of dropping lower).
However, when Peter said he was willing to share 10/10 with her for half the money, she accepted because it's a better investment. Their matchup I feel was better than Tej and Touker, but even the double dragon for 20% wasn't as good as the original offer he came into the den for.

It is because Peter is the wrong partner. He really only sees the recyclable as branding play but its actually a recycling play that happens to make money. There will be times when Robert will compromise profit for sustainability and Deborah who is already deep in that space would be easier to communicate that with.

I agree. He made a big mistake. Peter would have got him far greater distribution and market presence than Deborah could as she freely admitted. Peter is by far the richest and most successful dragon Deborah is very pragmatic and down to earth. so why not partener with then both? He skimped on just 5 % more. That could be in the millions lost.

He knew what he was doing when he "mistakenly" said 25% at the beginning. It was a test of the dragons to see which one was more interested in the money Vs the ethics. The 15% he offered is clearly a good deal anyway so for a dragon to take more means they 're motivated by greed. I think Debra saw this and showed her ethics by respecting his offer

If the numbers are spot on in terms of $, that's obviously the first hurdle to scale, but with Peter Jones, craves cohesion with a person, and a damn good character. Peter is always amusing because you his thought process may be complex but his feelings are always apparent. You could see from the first second that the pitcher slipped and said 25% he was fixated on it, and when he was fascinated on the product he became even more fixated on itm

At the end of the day, a valuation is always exactly the amount that someone is willing to pay for it. From any other VC’s you’d be right, but the network that comes with that valuation is worth something.

But the dragons aren’t the only investors in the world and I believe he could’ve kept more and got the same networks elsewhere in places like Sweden where I feel like this idea would go down amazingly

I would have taken the Peter/Deborah combo.
Actualy, Tukah/Deborah would have been the best. If he could bring the manufacturing cost down, they'd be even better off.
The manufacturing costs being brought down would be easy: get the plastics from Indonesia or Brazil (both of which have massive issues with waste and pollution)
The thing is, places like The Netherlands, Germany and some other European countries have massssivse pushes on this.
He would benefit more from selling his products to corporate industries in the UK if the customers could say that they were helping to clean up the country of origin, with the country of origin being the one their business was from.
The problem is, recycling actually takes alot of energy, its expansive to remould plastic, it also not good for the environment like people make out.... You need to melt the plastic.

I’m glad he went with just her. And peters reaction saying he wouldn’t buy any after getting rejected shows that he was only passionate about the profits rather than what it’s doing to the world, so he made the right choice. If the other dragons were passionate about the reason behind the product like she did, they would have had a better shot.
