wildebest “oooo! We get to wear hard hats! How marvelous! I look like a proper worker! Too bad this vest doesn’t match my shoes. This will make QUITE the anecdote at my next dinner party!”
Because he has been in the field. We're talking about real experience, not someone assuming they know how it works. It's like when an HR department at work tells you how to do your job, but they've never done it and you've been doing it for years, your way will always be the better way, because it comes from that experience.
I think what happens is that they've probably heard and seen every sales tactic in the book. A good or pushy salesperson might be able to persuade a normal person, but it's much harder when you're talking to someone who are not only careful with their money, but also probably gets pitches and salespeople talking to them all day about their dumb products and ideas. So, they've learned to sort through a good sales people and people with actual good ideas or things with the potential to make a lot of money.
I'm a 40 year old bricklayer,21 years service, this is a good idea, but wouldn't work on the internal leaf of block work or internal walls or when on the ground so only part solution, cant see it catching pn
He was smart. Deb is gonna put more effort into 35% than 4 Dragons into tiny % each. Plus she’s connected. And he doesn’t have to deal with 4 different investors.
I think actually that patents don't work. Look one of joerg sprave videos about patents. They can argue that x existed before, and that their version isnt affected by the patent plus they can just import ilegal copies anyway from china. Patents as well document really well how to build a copy.
Seriously. I met the man who invented the door breaching devices that all special forces and armed coppers use around the world and didn't bother patenting it. He just made a makeshift one himself for use in the force a few decades back.
IratePirate sorry but he didn’t invent a battering ram. Been used for millennia. You can explain the concept to a chimp. Might have Made that particular ram, more ergonomic or whatever but he didn’t invent the battering ram.
I love Deborah. The reason she didn't say: 'or, I'll take 5%', like the others, is because she wants John to concede that she really is the best person with the most expertise in this area. That's also how you build trust.

Actually the design protection is better becorse then you have the state backin you up. on a patent you have to waste 2 years before poplishing your product while others can study it and start copying becorse you poplish the way to produce and operate. So patent is a money burner
What an insane move by Deborah. So brilliant!! I think the guy eventually made the right call. Can't imagine people with hundreds of millions really looking to grow a 5.000£ investment for a 7.5% stake. Deborah is the most well connected Dragon as far as his business goes and he'll have her time and focus. Plus if anyone can help him with getting that patent sorted it's her. Seems like a genuinely good guy and hope he becomes a rich man off of this.
The fact that he brought along personalised vests and hardhats for them is a nice little touch. I think that's the moment they realised they were dealing with a good guy, and then his humble and professional attitude which followed sealed the deal. In so many of these videos it's people's attitudes which really influence the outcome; no one wants to invest in someone they feel they can't work with.
Smart decision by the guy. Peter's offer along with others was "low risk charity". Deborah's offer was to actually help the business. He could have negotiated a bit but glad he went with Deborah in this. Contacts in the construction industry are more valuable than just money or name recognition.
This deserves all the success in the future. He is a fantastic humble person that has potentially saved the backs of many a brick layers in the future.
My absolute favourite thing about this idea is that for years, men have had this issue and a woman comes in once and suggests a blatently obvious solution within 5 minutes.
Its not a great idea though. Bricklayers need to move around the building so they will need to move the thing all the time, and not all brickwork needs scaffolding. Usually scaffolding is only used on multiple story buildings. Building a brick fence doesnt require scaffolding. There isnt that many bricklayers I dont think anyone is getting rich off this idea. He should at least make a standalone version that can be moved around.

The Dragons always damage the confidence of people with good ideas to make them think their business is less valuable than it is and that they are doing them a favour by giving them a worse deal than they want.
It is almost essential to possess a willingness to use such cut-throat methods in order to be successful in business, if you do not, you will become the victim of someone else's. This is the nature of the game, "all's fair in love, war and business" as they say.
He's going into business with construction companies, you think they'll not take advantage? This was a test, he should have negotiated terms. @@Coolguy-mk7hg that is great if you think about it. Especially in the UK. There are only 365 days in a year, most brick laying is not done year round due to weather and it rains quite often there in the UK so pulling $20000 in one year is pretty good for that sort of product
@@zephiel123 I am from the UK, brick laying and building work is done all year round here: sun, rain or snow. Also, it is £20,000 this is about $30,000 at the time this episode was on. Even saying that, £20,000 wasn't even having loaned them all out. £365 x 90 = £32850 or nearly $50,000 when this episode was shown. This was evening and weekend work FYI... You wouldnt sell these products, you'd make the money back from making them within a year. Building companies would happily rent them too, as it means they don't have to carry around the equipment, as they'd get dropped off/picked up. A single building site would be bringing him in £12-14k per year, minimum
"How come noone's thought of this before?" Well... before, bricklayers were 95% men (as they still are), and nobody cares about men's health or comfort enough to think of even something this simple. But as soon as one's bricklayer's wife got involved, she cared enough to think of it.
@@MidnightSt Or maybe she left it up to her husband who had years of experience in the industry because it would be spectacularly arrogant for her to try and make the product herself when she likely knows virtually nothing about the practicalities of it? If they increase his sales by even just double... which should be a piece of cake given hes barely selling it.. hes already making more back. Deborah gets these used by just 1 big house building company like persimon or barrat.... well you heard how many brickies on site per house. With proper business contacts and them getting it to markets he couldnt, they add way more value than they take away. So even though they are taking a sizeable chunk which seems unfair, in the longer term its a massive investment for him and could make him a hell of a lot more.
@@everythinggoodsfeckingtaken Yeah, It sucks getting such cut but economicaly it make sense. it is the same logic where you take on debts to grow your business if you can calculate that interests from that loan will be lower then future gains from that growth. But if he had sold 7.5% to 5 dragons, he would be selling 37.5% for $25,000. That means her offer was better because he was only selling 35% for $25,000.
Joe but the 5 dragons would mean the experience and help from all of them, while missing out on another 2.5% he would have gained four other dragons to help him reach higher successes
But after the woman wanted it all, it was then four dragons putting up $25,000 while still only taking 7.5% a piece; so 30% total. It was up to him to decide if 5% was a worthwhile cost to pay for her experience, and he thought so.
I went to Swansea and I was there when the new Bay Campus area was in the middle of construction. I actually remember seeing these things once or twice, cool that this guy got the recognition for such a simple yet useful idea. As a bricklayer, on site this is a cracking idea. They move out the way as well which is brilliant, a great product I hope he nails it and makes a mint out of it
I guess it's all a numbers game. The way Peter explained it, splitting it 5k each makes the risk substantially lower (1/5th as dangerous), but the reward won't be too much smaller
Well not smart enough to patent the idea, I think that little oversight cost him a better deal. It is such a simple idea that you do have to wonder why no one has thought of it before.
Fair play mate if only he came up with this 30 years ago he would’ve made HIS job as a bricklayer a lot easier along with many other and he would’ve been a millionaire by now. It’s a win win. A lesson for many other young entrepreneurs and a win for him. Fair play mate

I work in construction (in the U.S.), and I've seen a similar concept done by a few bricklayers on jobs I've been on. They normally just take one of the brackets used to secure ladders to the scaffold and weld them to a piece of sheet steel, and it seems to do the job. I'm sure a pre-made one would sell well if it's reasonable.

For me, picking Deb was a no brainer. Experienced investors are not always something you want a lot of. If he had picked the four, that would mean he was for more times likely to get screwed over, he would have four more investors that he hast to keep happy, and he has four investors who may have different ideas of what they would like done-meaning he would have to make some of them happy and some of the mad. Choosing Deb was not only smart because she has experience in the construction industry, it was smart because it will be much easier working with one investor rather than four
I think they just wanted to put very little skin in the game to ride the upside. Basically a very high equity loan in which they wouldn't do much work. Terrible deal to pick 4 of them, lose 30% of his business, and only get 25k.

Touker is underrated, he looks old but he does bring some life into the den lol
It's hilarious when the brick layer is a better pitch layer than some of the 20 year salesmen
He definitely knows his product

The lesson learned here is: Don’t forget to patent useful inventions.
I think actually that patents don't work. Look one of joerg sprave videos about patents. They can argue that x existed before, and that their version isnt affected by the patent plus they can just import ilegal copies anyway from china. Patents as well document really well how to build a copy.
Very difficult

The most solid, honest bloke I’ve ever seen on this program
The fact that he brought along personalised vests and hardhats for them is a nice little touch. I think that's the moment they realised they were dealing with a good guy, and then his humble and professional attitude which followed sealed the deal. In so many of these videos it's people's attitudes which really influence the outcome; no one wants to invest in someone they feel they can't work with.
Yeah, that was a really lovely touch! 😀
What a wonderfully honest and thoughtful man.
Which is why they shafted him
It's such a joy to see good hardworking family men succeeding! This guy deserved it. I wish him all the success in his life ahead!!
My absolute favourite thing about this idea is that for years, men have had this issue and a woman comes in once and suggests a blatently obvious solution within 5 minutes.
true that and in many many fields....

He hasn’t even tried to negotiate a better deal. This shows that inventors are not entrepreneurs.
Or maybe he didn't negotiate as he was pleases with even getting offers. After all it's better to leave with something rather than nothing
Deborah offered a better deal. And the best deal of all, one where both parties feel they got a win.
Deborah will work hard for the success of the business; with a large stake she stands to make a fortune. As for the gentleman, he has the controling share, and the offer was likely below his threshold.
If I've learnt anything, it's that grinding the arse out of the price tends to lead to a shittier product

It is almost essential to possess a willingness to use such cut-throat methods in order to be successful in business, if you do not, you will become the victim of someone else's. This is the nature of the game, "all's fair in love, war and business" as they say.

Максим but the woman had the most experience with construction anyway, even she told him their experience wouldn’t help.
Joe Yeah that’s true, in the end he made the right decision
But after the woman wanted it all, it was then four dragons putting up $25,000 while still only taking 7.5% a piece; so 30% total.
It was up to him to decide if 5% was a worthwhile cost to pay for her experience, and he thought so.
