The exact reason we would never do this to a four year old is exactly why the people who would do it.
Because they are vulnerable and weak in comparison to an adult. It's horrifying and I have to remind myself that those people just make... choices. They chose to be this way.
I can't wrap my head around it any other way. I think some people just are that way. It's not necessarily about their upbringing or mental illness or whatever. They just wanted to and there wasn't enough to stop them from going about it.

It's a balance that needs to be struck. Where I come from in Europe, the paranoia & fear around what is a very remote possibility is an excessive price to pay. Asian children have happier & freer childhoods. Especially in countries where there is there is very high social trust.

I remember when i was 14 in 2017. I was walking alone from a course when i was approached by a man i think in his early to mid twenties. He asked my name and where does i live. He then wanted my help to "catch the thief" in the nearby park. He had a buddy who's riding a motorcycle and both shared a suspicious gesture. I'm gonna be honest, 2017 was a bad year for me. I was bullied a lot to the point of it effecting my self esteem. I nervously rejected his offer and ran to my house which is only one block away and never looking back. When i look back from my block, they were gone. What scares me is the fact that i did not see any red flags prior to the man and the buddy's interaction. Well, many of us have that dark year and moments want to be forgotten and left behind, and this is one of them for me

I'm glad that you were attentive enough to not only notice that the request was strange but that both men were behaving strangely. You may have felt it later than you might like but you felt it and got away.
My mom actually specifically taught my sister and I to be super alert and even take note of driver's license plates and the make and model of cars in our area so we know if there's anything out of place. We lived in areas where trafficking was common and our father would also send people to take us to get back at our mother and it helped her track us down when we would tell her the car make and color.
I'm sad that you were struggling at the time but I cannot stress enough how important it was that you took off and didn't stay close enough for either of them to grab you. Because that legitimately sounds like a planned abduction. Never trust when people pinch you between them like that.

That's actually because she isn't being a storyteller. She's reporting on true crime cases and engaging people to think about it further than how it initially made them feel. She gets into the politics and corruption if its relevant. She also has a history in journalism and abides by journalistic integrity and that's what you're seeing here. You can definitely tell that she has her own feelings about the cases but she doesn't put that into the case itself.
She's also very worldly and has a vast understanding of the topics she discusses. Which is also likely why she has managed to get several direct interviews with people involved in cases she covers.
      She's not a storyteller. She's a crime journalist.

I’ve seen children in Nepal running g errands for their mother, buying groceries & sometimes cigarettes. And they are just 4 hardly 5yrs old. Some had to watch over their siblings when their parents are out for work. What they eat while the parents are gone, who knows? How they look after their siblings… God knows? But by 8yrs and above they are fully working member in their family. 😢

For those asking why people let kids out alone to do errands, it's common in Asia for parents to send children for simple errands to a nearby local store and in the neighborhood, the owners are usually someone from that same neighborhood and people in the neighborhood look out each other. So usually there's not much to worry. Ofc that until the storm came.
Sometimes we would play outside without supervision as well even in my own neighborhood. Iirc, Dirang's case was mentioned in a local show called Fail Mahkamah (Lit translation: Court Files)

In Malaysia, it used to be that kids are allowed to run free, especially to walk to nearby stores like this case. Dirang's case (and sadly many other cases) began to change all that. You see not many people letting their kids walk alone anymore. However, there's still few cases here and there.
Like last year, two toddlers who wandered alone while their mom slept, died from a poisoned bag of chips. The neighbor who got hauled by the cops claimed the poisoned chips were bait to kill the monkeys that roam around his fruit trees. The case divided the nation where half is blaming the mom for dozing off the the other half blamed the neigbour for making such a dangerous trap.

Your storytelling is amazing, but this is a very chilling story. Dirang became a victim because of a sick man with sick thoughts. You definitely don’t deserve to live if you’re capable of being this twisted towards a child. Sometimes children can be vulnerable when people live under the notion that everyone knows everyone, I’m not trying to blame or make fun of the situation, I just think that it can make people not take extra steps to ensure safety of their families, especially if you don’t wanna be somebody suspecting somebody of evil, malice, and callousness.

This made me even more sad because they let her go on her own because they legitimately knew everyone and assumed that she would be okay. It's probably not even that uncommon for children to walk around the village on their own and be totally fine. But when it's not fine...things like this happen. And I think this was a major shock to the whole area. Because most people wouldn't do something sick like this. There are so many cases from India that I feel could be helped if there were more childcare services. A lot of these cases are just children being away from their parents for a short amount of time and being scooped up by nefarious characters while they are at work or in the market or something. And because it's so crowded in some areas it's easy to lose track of a small child.
There are some homes that offer to watch folks kids for the day but much like in other countries.... sometimes those people aren't good people either.
I totally understand parents being hyper defensive with their children more as an adult than I ever did as a child.

If you have children - hold them a little closer today. RIP Dirang
And for everyone trying to slander this mother for allowing her child to go up the street to buy some candy... please find a GRAIN of empathy. This is something that happens all the time. It is not the mother's fault that this happened. It's the literal predo that took her. Her mother just wanted to give her a treat and likely to get out and stretch her legs a bit.
Being a parent is a full time job but she also assumed that the community would also look out for her daughter because it wasn't a dangerous area usually.
Don't give them an opportunity if you can help it, but also remember that these kind of sick people are looking for even the smallest slip up and no one knew he was dangerous in that manner. Children can also simply wander off. It's literally one of the reasons child leashes became popular in the 80's and 90's. Like. I'm being so serious. I'm on the spectrum and used to wander off with literally anyone I thought looked cool or said they needed help. I had no real inkling that people I didn't know could be dangerous even though I knew some people I did know were. What I'm saying is - I wasn't a very smart kid. And I had a leash. It looked kind of like a koala backpack but it was undoubtedly a leash and before I got used to it I was literally getting yanked because I would try to dart off to investigate something shiny or something and YOINK.
It was honestly dehumanizing as hell but I stopped running off when my mom was running errands and learned that if I held onto her clothes she wouldn't yell at me for taking more than three steps away from her.
With all of that being said... They don't have the same culture of circling your child like a hawk literally all day. To my knowledge true crime isn't exactly popular there either so if it's not a local case they likely don't realize how prolific a problem predos even are in their area. This woman lost her child in the worst way you possibly could. And it could happen to ANY child.
You want to say it couldn't be yours but I assure you that it could. And that if it does - that's not your fault unless you literally GAVE THEM your kid. We call them predators for a reason.

I don't blame this mother as I understand this is their culture. My family culture are very different though - we are very protective. For example, my dad would pick me / my sister up from school everyday.

@@belladonna1994 You do realize that not everyone in India even has a TV right? And that these sorts of crimes are actually suppressed there due to massive issues with corruption and the caste system that still exists?
So she likely only knows what other locals know. People in the US had no idea how prolific child predators were until the freaking 80's. There are probably thousands of missing kids cases here in the states that are totally unsolved because no one was aware of the active danger.
I can't use my own mother as an example because she legitimately did not like or want us but other kids in our neighborhood also wandered the block with us unattended. The older kids looked after us and there was a chain of authority. We knew where we could go in case of an emergency and we knew to look at a cars make, model and color if we could. But there was legitimately a day I DISTINCTLY remember a child and will never forget. I lived in a predominantly black and Hispanic neighborhood at the time and we all constantly looked out for each other and one neighbor on the street would at least know where we were. But that day my mom's boyfriend at the time couldn't find us anywhere because we were in the old graveyard - where we weren't supposed to be. But we didn't get yelled at for it because it was likely the only reason we hadn't been hit. Because that day a drunk driver had chosen to go through the roundabouts in the area. He hit several children, one of which he had apparently seen and called the ambulance for. He hustled us into the house and escorted the other kids home too. He told them what was going on and let them know that the man was still at large and attempting to hit people. We weren't allowed to go outside for days. We kept watching the news to see if he was caught but the news never even mentioned the child that was hit. The whole neighborhood changed after that.
No one played in the roundabouts. People were snapping at us for being in the streets even though usually no one cared. Things changed even though no one outside of our neighborhood even seemed aware that it happened. Even though it put a child in a wheelchair.
Sometimes all you have to rely on is your community to stay safe. And if you can rely on the news to keep you and your kids safe - more power to you. But you have to realize that that knowledge is a privilege, not a given. And it certainly isn't in a country as large and divided as India. Because it isn't even a given in the United States.

It's the difference in culture and values. It's a multi-cultural country. Certain cultures seem to be lax in supervision of their children. They let their young children wander around alone by themselves with no adult supervision. Their children often get kidnapped, some raped, trafficked. For some other cultures in the country, that is unthinkable. Really, how can you let your 5 yr old girl go out to the stores by herself?

    • @DarkAsiawithMegan
      @DarkAsiawithMegan  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +23

To add my thought, I think a key difference lies in how parents supervised their children in the past compared to today. These days, it’s almost unimaginable to leave children unattended but when I was younger, it was common for children to play with friends unsupervised or wander around the neighborhood running errands for their parents. Looking back now, it’s shocking to realize just how dangerous it actually was.🥲

That's true for most based on what I've seen over the years. Both parents scrolling through their phones and leave the oldest child in charge of keeping an eye on their younger siblings even when the child is literally begging for the parents to get the siblings under control or play outdoors without adult supervision even if the area is secluded . I think that the worst one is how some parents don't bother holding their children's hand in public especially if it's easy for the child to get separated or disappear from sight due to their height(beeping shoes alone won't be helpful in loud crowded areas or when there's other children wearing them as well). Child safety harnesses are never sold in stores and need to be bought online since nobody uses them(also parents are afraid of being seen as treating their child like a dog for using the harness). I got looks from other parents and overheard a few disapprovals when I fastened a safety leash to my 18 months old son's wrist before letting him wander around the clinic during his vaccination appointment(can't stop worrying about my son's safety without it even if my husband claims that I'm over thinking things or being paranoid).

That's true. I think people tend to see the good in fellow human beings that's why they can't believe that bad people with evil and disgustingly perverted intentions exist, but they do. These evil people hide themselves everywhere in the world so tbh nowhere is truly safe. Young children are easy prey for these disgusting predators and I feel that we as parents shouldn't be complacent that nothing will happen to our children. We have be more watchful over our children and teach them things like stranger danger from a young age..

The idea of abolishing the death sentence is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. They committed one of the most heinous crimes, so what's wrong with giving them the same thing? Sometimes, i wonder why lawmakers made these unfair laws or changes? Do some of them have committed crime deserving the death sentence themselves that they need to make safety measure in case they're caught they will not have to die as punishment? If the abolishment of death sentence is done for other types of crime like drug mule who didn't know that they're being used as drug mule, then i get it. But for murderers?! Are you freaking kidding me?! You willingly let murderers roam the street? I thought law enforcement is supposed to make ppl feel safe, not make criminals feel happy

I hope no one blames the mom for what happened to Dirang. In many southeast asian countries, small neighborhood stores are very common. These stores are usually attached to homes/residencies and are managed by the homeowners within a community. The mom, just like most people, might have been used to sending her kid to buy an item or 2 from the store. We don't usually think we can be a part of the statistics until it happens to us. So, to asshats out there, please don't say anything insensitive towards the mom.
