I absolutely love your tutorials. They're so well explained, and clear. It's hard to find instructions like this that even a beginner could follow. You take a task that seems overwhelming or impossible and turn it into something that I don't feel horribly under qualified to do. Thank you so much for making them and for giving hopes to new designers with big dreams!
CGL's tutorials are the best! Always so clear and straight to the point, very concise. I cannot believe how easy she makes this look; I have been terrified to try godets for a long time, but now I think maybe I can handle it, thanks to this splendid little video. Thank you.
Just over a year ago, I made a renfaire dress with some of these in them. I didn't know what they were called or how to do them, I just knew that I wanted them in my dress... it turned out okay under the 10 foot rule. Now that i'm adapting a pattern I already have for another costume, I figured I'd find out how to do these properly. This helped SO MUCH, I feel so much more confident and able to create the design and look I am truly looking for in my projects.
Hello Aphrames. Thanks for sharing your story, if you need more information about Godet I have three more video tutorials in my playlist here is the link th-cam.com/video/4fHE6zsFAN4/w-d-xo.html
I must have watched about 10 videos on how to do this before I got to yours, sorry to say, and all of them were at least twice as long as your video and left me no further along than I was before I watched them! Yours is brilliant, perfect instruction, and construction. Thank you, thank you, thank you! 💜💜💜
As an experienced sewer, I have forgotten many of the details of the techniques I've learned over the years. I'm so glad your video popped up when I googled How to sew a godet. I couldn't remember if I started from the top or the bottom, so THANK YOU for the reminder!
Thank you so much. The size of the godet is personal choice. If you're considering adding one to a project, try a few tester pieces first to get it just right.
Exactly what I was looking for! Of course I didn’t realize that’s what they were called though. I’ve done this before, but it’s been awhile so I needed to refresh my memory on how to make it correctly. Thanks so much for sharing!
Yes there is. A gusset is an insertion of a small piece of fabric that gives more free movement, where a godet is used under the same principle but is also a decorative feature.
I love your tutorials! Thank you so much for explaining how to do this in such an easy to understand way! I've subscribed so that I can look up your tutorials in the future! Great job!! I'm making a dress for a wedding and it just need a little extra flare. This will be perfect!! Happy sewing!!
Great video! I was having troubles inserting a godet and the book instructions weren't clear on how to draft it and neither it showed how to sew it! Thanks!
It's like you're reading my mind... I just made a pencil skirt... I wanted to make a slit on the back like such but was not sure how to or even how to research it on line because I wasn't sure what the proper name was... Now I do Godet, you are the best thank you thank you thank you.
thank you so so much! I just had an idea of doing this to a skirt on a dress and had no idea what it was called or how on earth I'd go about it and your video popped up. it's amazingly well explained, easy to see what's going on and presented simply. You're amazing!
I have always been scared to try something like that because it looked too hard, but your explanations were so clear and easy to follow. I am not afraid of trying that now. Thank you so much from Australia. Love your accent. How do you know the size of the godet?
Thanks so much for this tutorial! Im combining a wool skirt and a suede jacket to make a cape and this should look great because i wanted to keep the yolk on the back of the jacket!
Thanks so much for making this video. I have so much trouble with this type of insertion. I actually gave up on a beautiful Vogue pattern because I couldn't insert the 4 godets called for with any accuracy! I'm gonna pull it out and try again.
Wow! Very easy to understand from your video. I've got a skirt idea in mind but I didn't know what the method I was thinking of was called. Evidently, it's called a godet!
very helpful. Could you show how to insert a godet into a skirt panel when there isn't a seam. Essentially, where the fabric is slashed to a particular point, and then the godet extended from the top of the slash. Having a little difficulty at the top part. Thanks!
Oh my good grief!! This is EXACTLY what I was looking for!! Thank you so much for posting this!! (By the way, you have pretty hands & nails too! 😁) thanks again!
I have been trying to make a kick pleat for my dresses but they never look right, messy. So now I am doing the godet and it is so much easier and looks much better. Thank you so much!
Hi Coleen, I was wondering if you could please make a full video tutorial on how to make a Cowl Skirt? I love the style but do not know how to make one. Sorry, I forgot to say that I like the video above.
This was SOOOO helpful.., Thank you!.. I just subscribed to your ch.. cant wait to view more of your sewing videos.. You explain and demonstrate things perfectly and make it easy to understand everything👍😊🌷
I'm making making a medieval dress in two colors (front and back mint and side front and side back teal). If I have enough fabric I'm going to try to make a contrast panel hip down between the side center and side back and and the very back. The front is solid so I don't need to bother with that. it's been so long since I've done this I didn't even remember how any more. Thanks :)
Thank you for commenting I-Fan Hall. Here is my link to the Godet playlist th-cam.com/video/4fHE6zsFAN4/w-d-xo.html this should help you with your project.
Wonderful video. Just what I needed. But if you don’t back stitch at the top of the godet how does the stitching not unravel when it’s being washed etc? Thank you
Hi Thanks for responding so quickly. I am not quite clear on what you mean. Just to clarify are you suggesting I add interfacing to both sides where I cut the slit to add an area that simulate a seam then add the godet or ? Just to be sure we are on the same page the pucker is occuring above the area where the godet is inserted because of course that area is reduced by sewing in the godet.
Thanks for the video. I have a material that is little short for width for my top. Adding a few inches with this method, I will be able to create my own top. Thanks so much showing how to add godet.
Very good, I love your videos, you always show the answer to my every query regarding my sewing projects, and very well too, many thanks and keep posting 😊😊😊😊
Thank you so much ! This is exactly what I think and wonder. I want to add it to a skirt, but I can not imagine how to make it. One more time, thank you friend !
An excellent tutorial. Thanks so much for taking the time to post it. I have a couple questions regarding utilization of the godet. If one we're going to have a godet behind a zipper, which would be the order of installing the two features? Also, could one retrofit a zip garment with a godet, and if so, how would one do that? Again, thank you for uploading the godet video.
Hello Mama Mode, answer to your first question insert the zip first then add the godet. Yes to your second question, use the same method as directed in the video.
It's the latter. Before you make the slash (cut) interface the wrong side of the fabric as this will ease any puckering. Maybe look at your stitch tension as well.
Hello. I love your videos. This one was so helpful that I was successful at inserting the godets on the two side seams of a skirt I was making for dance class with minor trepidation lol. One question. The skirt I was making also required a partial slit be cut also in the front and back of the skirt. As there is no seam a pucker appears when I am trying to put in the godet in both areas. Any suggestions on how to overcome this issue?
Love your sewing techniques, I like your videos and how you explain things so people can understand. I have a question for you. I have a maxi dress that I would like to transform with something like this. However, the front of the dress does not have a seam to put the Godet in. I want to be able to cut it down the middle and insert fabric to give the dress a little bit of a flair , so it has more flow. How do you do this without cutting the neckline and make it look like it was made like that? Thanks
Hello Deja Ajanae, you can also put a godet into a garment ‘slash’ even if there is no seam here is the link for that video>> th-cam.com/video/fsQPJZu29Iw/w-d-xo.html, I’m also doing another tutorial on godet which I will be uploading next week, make sure you stay tuned, you may find it helpful.
Hi! Colleen, I loved your tutorial and it really helped me a lot. Thank you❤ I am still working on the project and am doubtful about its hemline with the godets, can you suggest me some tips on how I can get a neat finished hemline?
Hello Colleen, please would you show how to turn a very tight pencil skirt into a slight A line, do I insert an upside down v? If so where and how , thank you 😊
Yes you can insert an up down V, the widest part of the V should be at the hemline, tapering up to the hip level to the point where it is comfortable for you to walk. I hope that helps Samantha.
@@colleenglea yes, thank you Colleen, it's an outfit for my son's wedding that I'm thinking of, it's lovely, but I want to be able to dance in it! 😊👍🏼🇬🇧😉

It will all depend on your sewing project or where you wish to place the godet. The size will be measured from that point onward.

nice instruction, thank you! But will the top be secure enough without backstitching?
Yes depending on stitch length!
They certainly can be used as you say. It will add drama to your garment. Try doing a toile / muslin before hand so you know how it's going to look.
Lovely tutorial. I have one question, why don't you back tack when you sew the seam?
It's just the way my mum taught how to do it!
It all depends on how much flair you want in the godet. Do a test piece to get it right before adding it to the garment.
It's the latter. Before you make the slash (cut) interface the wrong side of the fabric as this will ease any puckering. Maybe look at your stitch tension as well.

Can this same technique be done in a double circle skirt or is it better to do rectangular panels and then just elastic it into the correct waist shape?
I would recommend the rectangular panels. But it's not impossible to insert them into a circle skirt, you may not get a good look.
What about securing the 2 starting points???
Does it make a difference if the godet is curved or straight across the bottom edge? Thank you
A curved edge will give a more professional finish!
