I used to work in IT security for a large company and another method used to wipe data from drives was degaussing. This was where an electromagnetic pulse was used to demagnetise the hard drive or tape, effectively wiping the data. Even this wasn't considered completely secure however and was usually just the first stage of the destruction process, with the degaussed drives then being shredded anyway.
The disposal company we used could shred drives so the resulting scraps were only 2mm thick. This still doesn't technically mean that the data still couldn't be retrieved but even those enterprising people in Ghana would have a hard time extracting anything of value from those scraps.
Of course, the less sexy but more practical method of data security was just to have a strict policy of forbidding any data containing customer or payment information to be stored locally on employee PCs, drastically reducing the amount of physical storage equipment that actually held sensitive data. I'll get in contact with my former colleagues and let them know that the heat death of the universe is also an effective method of data security.

You can't say it can't happen. For all we know, what we think of as time is just another spacial dimension for someone else. They can just walk over to our time period and take all our files regardless of whether we delete them or not. We're screwed.

Well... the universe's "death", is a paradox and isnt reality in the slightest, even though it is. The universe cant die, nor can it be alive. "Heat death" is just a dulled-down term meaning all of the different forms of energy passed on as by-products from the mechanisms of reality, ie: Light, sound, heat, etc.,. all conform and unify as one homogeneous gradient.
While that would destroy all life and all conformity and structure... it would simply mean the dawn of a new universe as those intermingling energetical masses would eventually disperse once more and we'd have another big bang.
These energies must do this as its paradoxical sense. If they didnt, the universe would be at a standstill and all that could be paradoxically percieved would be uniform energy, which would only be seen as Ebinaringment, the perception of non-uniform-uniform paradoxco-mathematicalism. In simpler non-paradoxical terms, basically if the universe were to never disperse its energies after "Heat death", "life" as we know it would be simply intermingled bundles of energy, in an eternal floating expanse eternity never ceases to fill.
The universe is a paradox, if it wasnt, it would break and defile all paradoxican knowledge, as, being not a paradox, it would mean the Big Bang was the first birth of the reality. But such would break all knowledge as paradoxically, something MUST come from something, energy flows and intermingles with other energy, paradoxical mathematics triggers other events to happen, thus there cannot be a start nor and end point to reality...

You would never be able to visibly perceive the great Heat Death in motion, as such an event would take incomprehensible amounts of aeons, thus your decay-filled death would have resulted an unknowable amount of times over.
The only way you could see the universe in heat death would be if it's death were a grand sweeping motion that filled of the endless expanse, but even still then, by the time it were close enough to perceive, you would have likely already died many times over.
If the above statements were true, than its easily deduced that in the earliest chambers of the universe, Heat Death is already in motion, and the cosmic worlds present have been swallowed by the endless maws of uniformity and inability.
The only perception of Heat Death possible is your energy to simply percieve paradox and uniformity. Your entire reality, your language, your unable though, would be nothing more than the laws of the universe you abide to.

This really pisses me off, not just because it's such a shitty thing to do, but in Canada(and in other countries, I assume) we pay an eco-fee when we buy anything electronic. That fee is supposedly used to dispose of electronics in a safe and environmentally friendly way...in my mind, that doesn't mean just sending them somewhere else as a "donation". That isn't "disposing"of them...it's just moving them somewhere else and making it someone else's problem. And that's not what I'm paying for when I pay that fee.
In a sense, I don't even blame the syndicates for leaking the data.
It was the responsibility of the "donators" to dispose of them properly and now it's their fault the data got leaked.
