  • There are a lot ways to look at plug-in hybrids. Audi’s Q5 55 TFSI e (AKA plug-in hybrid) appears to be the Goldilocks choice in many ways. It’s nearly as powerful as the SQ5 performance model. And after tax credits, it can cost the same as the gas-only Q5 55. And for those who worry about electric range, it offers the luxury of switching to gasoline for those unexpected cross country road trips.     I have had a 2022 q5 phev now for 3 weeks and I have been averaging approximately 32 miles per charge in Austin Texas. I drive with a soft foot though but it's much better than I expected.

    Great review!
    Couple points:
    the Audi/Porsche (see Taycan) EV ratings are self reported and conservative to EPA. Car and driver “Audi voluntarily lowered its label value from the 29-mile figure the Q5 earned during EPA testing”. I think perhaps they guarantee a worst case scenario of driving spiritedly at the max 85mph on EV mode. I’ve had the Q5e, and it has gotten 30+ miles EV range through the winter and summer now (highest reading has been 36).
    Have had several Audis and this Q5e is the best yet with adaptive and supple air ride.
    For those considering, wait for 2022 model as Audi will be upgrading to a 17.9kWh so should be closer to 40 miles real world.

    Thank you so much for the great reviews Tom. Your review of the 2017 Q7 was the deciding vote back when we pulled the trigger and made our purchase. Fast forward to today and we have since sold that Q7 to a friend who had more need for the space as our annual mileage has come way down thanks to the pandemic and retirement. So again, it was your review that cast the deciding vote as we just took delivery of our '22 Q5e and could not be happier. No range anxiety thanks to it being a PHEV as you so clearly point out. And having charted our weekly errands, we were barely breaking 30 miles per day and with folks in the forums routinely getting 35+ miles, we anticipate cutting way down on our gas consumption. Keep up the great reviews!!!

    I have an a4 allroad with a screen similar to the q5. At first I didn’t like the design, but after having just driven a rental Kia Soul with an embedded screen in the dash, I can tell you the ergonomics of the “tacked on” screen are superior. It’s function over form in this case.

    My RAV4 Prime is getting 55 miles electric on an overnight charge. 30% higher than the rated 42. It comes with a spare and runs on regular gas. And the CVT transmission is completely unobtrusive.

      Lovely to hear.
      However, we spent over 15 years calling these CVTs which severely underhanded the intricacy and brilliant simplicity that series/parallel planetary gear hybrids are.
      And they only get better with more powerful batteries, which Toyota decided to bring just last year.

      And has 302 HP with stunning 1200W audio system. Easily the best buy in the market....and well over 30+mpg without ever needing to re-charge as regeneration ability is the best of any plugin vehicles....one can binge through a whole season of netflix or go through NFL sunday games with their friends while traveling through the country.

      My 2018 CT6 2.0E plug-in is rated at 30 miles on battery and routine see 40 miles at the speed limit. If I go below speed limit I have see 47 miles on battery alone. When the 2.0T fires up I'm usually seeing 38-39 mpg with +620 miles of range combined. All with 432 lb-ft of torque for a whoppjng $37K brand new with 575 miles on the odometer.

      @@normt430 why don’t we compare apples to apples Norm? A base LE RAV4 with AWD and no other options retails for $29k. A RAV4 Premium with AWD and the same available options as my RAV4 Prime XSE retails for $41k. Mine MSRP’d for $49,405. Mine has adaptive lights and HUD; not available on the Premium. The Premium has more adjustments on the AWD system not available on the Prime.
      But after my Federal tax credit and Oregon state rebate mine will cost me $2000.00 less than the Premium model. And so far I’m averaging 61mpg after 5000 miles.

    I have this one. Awesome car! I can sometimes get it charged to 21 or 22 miles. Plus you can add a little more charge while braking when going downhill

    I own a 2021 Q5 e. My electric only mile has been between 22 and 30 miles. I keep the car in dynamic mode. I have never seen 19 miles EV. I do live in a climate that has cold winters and hot summers. Of course, I would love to have 60 miles all electric😊

    Tom, no, it’s not inevitable (other Audis, BMW, Mercedes, … integrate their infotainment screen in the dash gracefully); I hate slapping a tablet on the dash. Planning on getting the Q4 AWD when it’s available in the US later this year; one reason why I didn’t get the ID.4 is the panel stuck to the dash.

    Green light: Photography and editing are excellent as usual.
    Red light: 19 miles EV range? Really? Also, 54 ft^3 of cargo is on the small side; a Honda CR-V has 76 ft^3.

    After all my research I actually picked this same car up (P.+ w/Sports Plus and air suspension and B&O 3Dsound). Why the E plug in hybrid over all the others? Simple, $6400+ in instant federal savings off the dealer price and when used in Audi mode, you’ll get between 35-60mpg average when driving normal. Electric only, 15-28 miles range depending on how heavy your foot is. And of course, other than the awesome gas savings as electric charging is cheaper than the gas it uses. Then what most may not get yet, it’s also just about as fast (0.1-0.3sec slower to 60mph) as the SQ5 but much more economical! Where else can you get such a heavy luxury car with both gas and electric motors and able to be doing 50+MPG average one second and the next zipping along at the push of the pedal and or buttons?!
    Never going to a gas only car ever again after experiencing this plug in hybrid.

    I just don't care what the whiners think about the navigation screen sitting where it is -- in this car and others. Perhaps play with the aesthetics a bit, but that is where that screen belongs. Burying it down in the dash just doesn't work -- it needs to be as close to your line of sight as it can get.

    40 miles. All I ask is 40 all-electric miles. That would cover a modest commute, yet only a few of these PHEVs get there. Why is it that Toyota can do it, can't build them fast enough, and no one else has figured it out (except maybe Hyundai with the new Tucson)

      Bespoke NEW platforms that were designed to be all-electric and/or PHEV offer the 40+ range (e.g., Hyundai Ioniq and Toyota RAV4). Older platforms (like this Audi), into which the manufacturer "stuffed" the EV bits, offer limited EV-only range.

    Excellent vehicle. If Evil Twin is amenable, add to his rear seating review rear windows, as in do they go all the way down. Those windows that don't is, for me, a darn-near deal killer. Will add that I'm now eager to dive in to see if Audi offer a hybrid powertrain in the A4 Avant, which I find more appealing than the Q5.

      I drive lexus es300h 50liters i get 1000 kilometers in city and reg gas. So 17kilo for one one liters 35k used

    So it will only go 19 miles on electric? If the battery is drained completely, how much electricity is needed to charge fully? At fuel prices right now 19 miles equates to about a $1.65 worth of gas in my wifes 2020 Q5.
    My wifes Q5 averages 23/25 city and 34/37 hwy and thats running 75 to 80 mph.

    I'm one of those that care for total range more than EV range as I do over 30K a year and don't like to make multiple stops on my long ventures. For example, my ML 250 Diesel SUV gets me more than 700 miles on the highway (large fuel tank). Obviously, I would not be interested in this vehicle because the regeneration is not that good (27 mpg) and the total range of less than 400 miles is also not too good, unlike RAV 4 prime with 550 miles range. Also, don't like the extra 30% cost of premium (unlike RAV 4 Prime that only needs regular 87 octane). Therefore, Diesel (which is even cheaper than 87-Octane at some places) is a much better buy and economical/ efficient for me as I drive more than the average person. Also, most people don't have the temperament or the opportunities to recharge after every trip, therefore the regeneration ability is more important. Presently, EVs and plug-in hybrids (except for plug-in hybrids that can take regular gas with 30+ mpg) are only good for people with the temperament and the opportunity to consistently recharge and have a very limited range of excursions....not for people who like to go on 1000+ miles road trips.

    It does not lighten the look of the cabin. It looks like an after thought. With voice enabled commands engineers should be fine with not having it sit up high. One could argue it's distracting and shouldn't be up so high.

    You should mention the tow capacity. It’s a SUV! Unless they’ve changed it from last year, I believe it’s zero. The regular Q5’s have quite a bit of capacity so you don’t want anyone to be misled.

    Tom, I'd love to hear what you are seeing for price quotes given so little vehicle inventory. I just purchased a new Honda Ridgeline and there was one vehicle available in my metro area (Austin). Even when I thought there were handful of them around, I assumed I would pay at or very near sticker. I am now hearing that some dealers are marking Ridgelines up $3-4k over sticker, particularly the higher trim levels. In speaking to others, I hear that dealers are marking up HD pickups $10-20k over sticker!

    We bought this one, and mild driving will net you 28+ miles on EV only. Refined, deceptively fast, fun to drive, but steering feedback is boring compared to my newish Mazda CX-9, which is larger but more nimble and actually more engaging. Too many confusing settings, especially between users, and needs more physical knobs. Only worth it considering the tax deductions.

    It's laughable to think that people would buy this to save money. VW / Audi have great difficulty making reliable internal combustion engines. Add to that, the complexity of a Hybrid electric system. This is going to be an endless money pit once the warranty is over.

      We have 40 miles of battery range in our 2018 CT6 2.0E plug-in and see +100 mpg. That is 3 times the non-plug-in CT6.

    I would lease an Audi but I don’t think I could ever buy one. The idea of how much repairs would cost with something like this out of warranty is scary.

      Ah the common FUD/preconception of owning a luxury vehicle without owning one. Owned 3 Audis up to 10 years old with no big repair bill other than wear and tear items. Had the 3.0T supercharged V6 which is known to be bulletproof

Doesn't work ... never worked ... and will go bye bye soon, I'll bet money on it. Ask the Audi design team how come they use dash integrated only screens on all there high end models and "R" series cars.

      That's not Audi's design team, that just about every designer I talk to. It's difficult to integrate large tablets into the dash. Smaller one's are easier.

    Sorry this takes a ridiculous amount of time to charge for the amount of mileage you get out of it. Why not just charge the battery with the engine and add in regenerative breaking to take care of the rest like other hybrid models do?

      It doesn't need to be charged and it does regen braking. And it doesn't really matter how long it takes to charge when you're sleeping while it happens. It's much more efficient when charged. Charging with the engine is far less efficient than a plug.

      Lexus does not sell a plug-in in the states today. At $50-80K 2-row cross you are looking Audi, BMW, or Range Rover in the luxury segment.

    Glad I bought my Toyota Rav 4 Prime. I am getting 42 miles of range and I paid $35 k after the $7,500 tax credit.
    Good chance my Toyota will outlast the turbo Audi that cost $25k more than my Toyota.

    Never “Buy” an Audi, they’re Deep money pits,,you’re a fool if you shell out Warrnty $$ for this pig.

    Pointless. Extra hardware for 19 miles? A hybrid with dual-clutch? Audi does this, because European automakers are required to "electrify" their cars. Germans need to license the Toyota/Aisin system like Ford and FCA did. The bolted-on tablet screams uncle Pete's garage, I don't care what designers think. The Mk7 Golf looks better inside, as are some Buicks. A sliding back seat, right, no one has ever made this before. Do they recline? You did not mention that. 8:33 - is this a hole in the seat? Is there a spare tire? 14:02 - is this a real exhaust tip? The production quality is top-notch as usual.

      While you are correct that this is a "compliance" vehicle design, I think you discount it too much. It is better in every way, including price (due to incentives) than the non-PHEV version of the same car (or it's Porsche cousin). Ford never licensed any hybrid technology from Toyota. That is a myth. Both manufacturers developed hybrid technology independently at about the same time. The PHEV Pacifica from (formerly known as) FCA was also designed and built by FCA-- neither Toyota and/or AISIN were involved nor does it use an AISIN transmission or drivetrain. In fact, Toyota is very late to the PHEV and EV game, although their hybrids are legendary and extremely well engineered.

    When the battery is discharged and operating as a nominal capacity hybrid, what kind of hybrid is this honestly?
    It's not the kind of hybrid built for efficiency and mechanical flexibility.
    But rather it's built for pandering to conservative buyers, and conservative investors where the automatic torque converter is replaced by just One electric motor and a dual clutch transmission. It can only charge and discharge at a time.
    A Prius is capable of moving on the electricity it generates and the excess torque from the engine after the generator, and a combination of +20 modes.
    German hybrids simply can't be that flexible.

      Luckily the engineers who desigend this and other PHEVs already thought of your issue and so the battery is never fully drained and the car is always at least a hybrid as much as any Prius.
