In VA I use to see my neighbor hang strips of fabric softener from her back pocket mowing her lawn. I think she was crazy but later find out the heavy scent keep mosquito off.

The soap prevents the vinegar from forming a surface tension layer. Bugs as small as gnats can literally walk on water (Liquids) due to the surface tension. The soap prevents the surface tension from forming so the gnats step, or lands, on the vinegar and gets a nasty surprise. Instead of the vinegar supporting the gnat, it instead falls into the vinegar and drowns. The soap does not make the vinegar sticky. Only 1 drop of liquid soap is all that's needed. If you want to see how surface tension of liquids work pour water, vinegar, etc into a bowl. Sprinkle a few grains of ground black pepper on top of the liquid. The pepper particles will be resting on top of the liquid's surface tension. If you align your sight across the surface of the water in the bowl you can see the pepper particles sitting in tiny little indentations on the top of the water. The pepper is on the water and not in the water. That is surface tension. Back to the bowl of water and pepper. Add only one drop of liquid soap right into the center of the bowl and watch what happens. The pepper will look like it all runs away from the soap drop and swarms to the edge of the bowl. What has happened is the surface tension began quickly collapsing at the point the soap drop was added. Like a stretched rubber membrane the surface tension collapsed causing a tiny wave emanating from the soap droplet and taking most of the pepper particles with it. If you take a bowl of water and watch very carefully across the surface you can see the surface tension layer by barely touching the water with a blade of grass, edge of a tooth pick, etc. If you have ever seen those bugs that run across the water in creeks (we called them water skeeters) the reason that they do not sink in the water is because they have specialized feet that can support the insect on the surface of water utilizing the water's surface tension. When I was a kid I would try to shoot the water skeeters with my BB gun. I discovered that a near miss would sometimes cause the water skeeter to sink. The BB striking the water right next to the insect would cause the surface tension to collapse for a millisecond causing the water skeeter's feet to slip into the water.

Great concoction, Kevin! That's a great idea for camps; that and the campfire should minimize the annoying pests. The weight of the ingredients wouldn't be an issue in my pack either. Just have to remember that the concoction can also attract bears as well, so in the bear bag it goes. When I camp I usually take my jungle hammock with the no see-um netting. When I get out of the hammock I'll use my head net and just pull it down over my hat, usually a boonie. You may already know this but permethrin sprayed on your clothing will keep flying critters away especially mosquitoes (and wasps, too). Before I head out to the AT or wherever, I take my gear out to my backyard Hobo Kamp and spray it with permethrin; gear and my EDC clothing including my socks (ticks love my socks). As a retired paramedic I advise all of my friends to NEVER spray DEET directly onto the skin as it is a carcinogenic.

I live at the end of a park and by far the fastest way for me to get around is through this park, but I can't do that, if you take 10 steps in the park you have the little bastards all over, your eyes, your nose, your mouth, your ears everywhere, so now I'm going genocide on all insects in my area.

Excellent ideas. Try this as well. If you have a yard that you mow, take the grass clippings and put them in a couple of garden trash cans or buckets and place them in the yard where you ARE NOT. Fresh dead grass puts out a bunch of CO2 and gnats love it way better than YOUR face. 😃

I get a empty pickle jar or something fill all the way to the top with Apple cider vinegar and poke a few tiny holes in the top with the tip of a sharp knife or something and seal, the knats will be attracted and then drown when they go in the holes, that way you arent looking at a plate full of gnats its more icognito and if you will be sitting the jar on a table where you are eating you can wrap the jar so that you don't have to look at a jar full of gnats. I sit these in a few places inside my home as well during gnat season

  • @karinb57
    @karinb57 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

It works because they love the fermented smell of vinegar. When ever I make bread they love the smell of yeast. And they also try to get to my sourdough starter. The soap breaks the surface tension of the vinegar so they drown.

The Gnats in my area of the Upper Midwest must be better informed and/or ditched the Vinegar diet. I just put out 2 vinegar traps with tiny amounts of Dawn layered on top and put these under the drip edge of a large Linden Tree we have. While doing so, I was bitten multiple times by a swam of Gnats. 1 hour later, neither trap had any gnats. I, though, had to treat the bites with Calahist. Calahist, for those of you who are older, is a knockoff of the old fashioned Calamine lotion from years past. I fondly remember using this for sunburn. Calahist, however, does not leave any residue on your skin like Calamine Lotion did.

Ive made it a point to keep my mouth closed when there are many gnats about, but i just ended up sucking them in through my nose. Tried to blow the thing out, but it went further in. . . It sucks... i ended up swallowing the thing anyway, but it just took a longer more interesting route.
Inside my house, ive set up a high power mini fan just above my sink and garbage bin, with a bowl of vineagar nearby to pull them closer to the fan. Any little bugs near the area fly about, get sucked in through the back of the fan, and the tiny carcasses are shot out the window. If i need it in a different location not near a window, i attach a small round cut out of window screen to the front of the fan, as smaller bugs will get caught in the screen.

Good information. I’ll try the vinegar and soap. We also get our yard treated for mosquitoes. So here is the problem, as we get ready to walk from our sunroom and slide the glass door to go into the screen in patio, between the glass and screen there are gnats like no one’s business, it so irritating, we cannot even sit out there and have a romantic dinner. It’s just horrible. By the way tell your wife I’ll have to try the malt vinegar with the french fries, I like to dip my french fries in mayonnaise.
If you have anymore gnat information on our situation please let me know.

Thank you sir. Is white vinegar included? I realize you said any vinegar (you showed ACV and balsamic).

Before becoming disabled I used to love to get out and hunt mushrooms, out here in wash state that's when the ground temp gets between 60-70 degrees, that's when you see trillium and the damn deer flies and knots, my remedy was to make about a pad of 4 paper towels and soak it with apple cider vinegar I'd wipe myself down with that. Any bare skin, arms, face neck, ears, hands throat then place it refolded up under my cap, then if they would start in on me I'd just rewipe.

Ricky I thought we are putting vinegar into the trap to ATTRACT the gnats, not repel? What's up with that?

BarbaraL Lowell kitchen knots and deer knots apparently do not like the same things.

thanx that may be it, or could be your body chemistry ... apparently insects are attracted to how much carbon we expel and certain scents ... its a lifeswork in FL trying to deal with insects especially mosquitoes.

I wonder if the salt, vinegar, soap solution works to kill the wild kudzu vines that spread one foot a day.

They love to fly into my mouth. When I focus on keeping my mouth shut, they go up my nose.

For me the vinegar and dish soap did not work and I used the correct amounts of each.. If I was lucky, I would find maybe one gnat in the bowl while watching several flying around for days.. The best way is to use a bug bomb.. Set it off when you leave and viola! no gnats or any kind of bugs..

I had that problem as well. I did not want to bomb my house every time gnats show up, as i have pets and want to avoid weird chemicals. There are a ton outside and they find a way in all the time. I once used vinegar and dish soap, but i put a chunk of pineapple in and submerged it half way in the solution, i put plastic wrap on top and poked holes with a tooth pick. This way, they were attracted enough to climb in through the holes, and even if they didn't stick in the liquid, they were unable to get out back through the holes. It worked really well, but i haven't had to do that again. I started using a fan above my garbage disposal while i am in my kitchen, the vinegar draws them closer to the fan... they get sucked in and shoots their little dead bodies out the window. I run the fan for a while now and again if i notice them and it kills a good number of them.

I used apple cider vinegar, they seem really attracted to that and a squirt of dish soap. Have caught 4 since last night. This is inside my apartment! 😕
