    Now that it’s a year(ish) later, how’s the 450 holding-up? I’ve completely maxed out my Slingshot 250, and I’m looking to move up to something that will allow me to grow my kit. I’ve been looking at the Flipside Trek 450 and the ProTactic 450 AW II. Thoughts?

    • @SeanTaylorPhotography
      @SeanTaylorPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A year on from purchasing/using this bag, I can categorically say it is the BEST camera bag I've ever owned. It doesn't look much different than when I first bought it, other than being muddy from use (I definitely don't 'baby' my kit!)

    • @virginiacamper
      @virginiacamper 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sean Taylor As an avid backpacker, I’m always looking at weight, to include the weight of the pack. I noticed that the ProTactic 450 is 2.295kg (5.06 lbs) and the Flipside Trek 450 is 1.69kg (3.72 lbs). This might be the deciding factor. The tactical webbing on the ProTactic might look cool, and it does have the added benefit of expansion with Molle gear pouches, BUT...is it worth the added weight and the potential of carrying stuff you’ll never use?

      @@virginiacamper Personally, it depends on how much gear you want to take with you. On photography-specific trips, I will take a 5d2, 17-40, 24-70, 70-300, 50, 2 filters, batteries, 1L nalgene, snack, map, mobile phone, battery pack, raincover, and probably have just enough room for some snacks. I've been considering some overnight trips once lockdown is eased, and I think I'll have to cut the load or maybe put a camera cube into another backpack entirely. This is a fantastic 'day trip' pack if you have someone with you to assist with supplies, but if you've got to carry a whole day's worth of food, water, and spare clothing, space starts to get tight.

      Sean Taylor For backwoods, multi-day trips, I’m planning on a camera cube (or HEX Ranger Sling) in my Osprey Atmos 65 AG.

BTW it also got removable camera cube (included) and lot more. i tried lot of other bags (shimoda, fstop , atlas) but i think i am settled on lowepro. hope it helps

    The best comparison between 350 and 450 so far!
    Some questions:
    - is the backpack water resistent?
    - I've read some complaint about the quality of the material: what's your opinion about it?
    - after one year and half do you have any pros or cons to add to your review?

    • @SeanTaylorPhotography
      @SeanTaylorPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question! Honestly, not at all. All of the initial thoughts I had on the backpack demonstrated in the video still remain - weird clips, 'flimsy' feeling straps, but the backpack is REALLY solid. It's still going strong after all this time, and I would say it is by far the best backpack I've owned. It is a fantastic trade off against camera bag and regular bag. Actually - one observation is that when walking around in the heat, the part of the bag which sits against your back can get a little gross - I had to wipe it down with a damp cloth - but I think that's more to do with me than the bag!

    Thanks for this review I like how you had both backpacks to review. Would have been great to do a side by side of how much gear you can hold in each bag. I have the 350 and now come to realize I have outgrown this size. Although the 350 is a great day pack it is a bit small for traveling on extended days. It is time for me to upgrade to the 450 and I hope that it can hold my 13" laptop well.

    Nice review Sean of the two bags. Clear, concise and informative; especially the "after the trip" observations. I was looking for something smaller than my full gear camera bag that I could use traveling/site-seeing with non-photographers in Italy. Because I'm now shooting with Fuji XT-3 cameras and lenses that save weight, size and money (compared to my old Nikon setup), I ended up purchasing the 350. It's a nice compromise that allows bring along the essential camera gear and also carry a jacket, snack and such without standing out in the crowd with a big pack. Keep up the videos, you're a natural in front of the camera.

    I know this is old, but thanks for the review. This is actually the only video I found that directly compares the 350 with the 450 versions. I was really hoping you would demo adjusting that top divider section though lol. Not sure if you even still read comments for these videos, but if you do, do you still use this bag? How has the quality held up? I see some reviews online of sections of the bag ripping and Lowepro not honouring the lifetime warranty.

    Thanks for the review Sean. You mentioned that the divider in the top compartment can be moved down, but can it be moved up or removed entirely? Great comparison.... is there much difference between the 350 and 450 top compartment? Thanks

    • @SeanTaylorPhotography
      @SeanTaylorPhotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They are the same functional design, presumably the 450 is just larger. Sorry, I didn't measure it and I don't have the 350 any longer. For reference, in my top compartment on the 450 I can fit a 1L nalgene, Anker rechargeable battery pack, an apple, a raincoat, and a few other bits and bobs. It's enough to pack lunch for the day and water OR pack spare clothes and water, but not really both. Bear it in mind - this is a great bag for being out and about for a few hours, but on a really long hike I'd prefer something that was more suited... or get the wife to carry the spare water!

    • @SeanTaylorPhotography
      @SeanTaylorPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's hard to say to be honest - I would say probably not based on the fact the lens is about 26cm long and the internal dimensions of the bag are 26cm height. If you were to put it in, it would be a squeeze and you'd probably not be able to attach the lens (as in you'd have to carry the lens and the body detached). The internal dimensions of the 450 are about 6cm taller, so even then I wouldn't be happy carrying a combo that big. Honestly I'd probably be looking for a different bag if you're wanting to carry larger telephoto lenses. Hope that helps.

    Well, what can I say? Excellent. It answers one question I had very well... would a body [mine is a D810] fit in when it has an L bracket on. My Whistler 450 will, but if I want to take a stripped-down kit of body, 24mm PC-e lens with 24-70 2.8 and my gorgeous Zeiss 21mm along with filters etc, then where do I put the rest of my kit? The answer is now as clear as crystal... I leave that in my Whistler and buy a Flipside 450. One small criticism of the video though. Near the beginning, you say that the top compartment is good for water. I would NEVER put water above my equipment. It's asking for the worst to happen. A Sigg bottle strapped to the side would be a much better bet.

    • @SeanTaylorPhotography
      @SeanTaylorPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comments Nick! I use a Nalgene and I'd be more concerned about my batteries leaking lithium than I would be that thing leaking water, but fair point nonetheless!

    I'm in the market for a hiking camera bag and couldn't decide between the 350AW and the 450AW. Well, thanks to your brilliant video, I've now decided on the 450. Your comparison of the two bags side by side was so helpful and the amount of camera gear you could fit into each bag was the clincher. Good morning, thank you for the great review, simple and clear. I only have one question because I usually use a Pentax k 70 with two lenses and a flash (af360 fgz) and a Canon A 1 (from 1979) with two targets (28 and 50 mm FD) and a flash (155). People take so much extra gear when out. I've never had the need for a spare battery, a strap, or a remote release. If I need to take a photo without the worry of me pressing the shutter causing camera shake, I set it to self-timer mode and allow 3-5 seconds between me pressing the button and the shutter opening.

  • @Kalimetric

    In the video it looks to me that you are using the tripod in the two straps to the side of the bag. Is there also a pocket on this side that you could put the bottom of the tripod into, before attaching the top strap? I don't like the idea of leaving the bottom strap to stop the tripod falling out, as I plan on cycling with this set up. I have a 3LT Brian by the way, so 16 inches long without head.

    • @SeanTaylorPhotography
      @SeanTaylorPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Daniel - thanks for watching. There are indeed pockets on both sides of the bag. They are big and stretchy. I usually put the tripod on one side just hanging down (each side has two straps) and my Nalgene in the other. I don't usually put the tripod straight on the back of the bag as this stops the bag sitting flat on the ground, but sometimes I do. Either way on each side of the bag there are 2 straps and a 'pocket' - you could put the bottom of your tripod in there for sure, but I don't as it would cause the tripod to be a bit top heavy for my liking.

      Hard to say really. I think I prefer the design of the flipside trek as it more suits me for the hiking/walking I do - looks like it's a sleeker design with more walking support (waist straps and sternum strap) plus it's more secure from pickpockets as you can only access the camera gear when the bag is off.

      Probably the 350 tbh. I'm 5'11" and the 350 fit my frame better and felt more comfortable. If I had a smaller camera and lenses I would go for the 350. The 350 physically wouldn't fit my camera. Right now with 4 lenses (17-40, 50, 24-70 & 70-300) it's a squeeze but everything fits fine. For a G9 I would 100% go for the 350.
