  • A drivers eye view of the journey from the Walnut Tree Viaduct to a fictional station at Rhoose late on a clear summers evening. The video was recorded at double speed which has led to some juddering here and there, and a few of the signals are against us. However it's only intended to give you a flavour of the route which is available to download for Train Simulator here: www.mediafire....
There are plenty more excellent routes and scenarios available to download for Train Simulator by joining the Facebook group 'Recreating Britain's Lost Routes' / 1070113816378979 and clicking on the announcements tab at the top of the page.
Other videos of the route will appear below in time:

    2. Barry to Barry Pier stations • Drivers Eye View of "B...
    3. Trehafod to Tyn y Caeau junction • Drivers Eye view of "T...

The whole Barry Rhondda main line and it Walnutree spur up to the viaduct of the same name at Taffs Well was abruptly closed in April 1963 (18 months earlier than planned under Beeching) because the vital wooden signal box (not brick as shown) at Tyn-y-Caeau junction seen at 5.20 burned down to the ground.

A very impressive run Ben the amount of detail shown in the Cadaxton sidings and Barry dock areas is fantastic. It must have taken an age to research. Befitting for that Barry docks was the greatest coal exporting docks in the world in 1913.

The plate layers hut just after Crofft-y-Genau road overbridge was much larger than usual and larger than that shown. It was of all stone construction with an East to West tin sheet pitch roof, an external fireplace and chimney to the approach elevation, a door to the far elevation and a long window to the front elevation. Also just beyond this railside hut existed/exists a steel constructed overbridge across a narrow farm occupation track. Sorry!

Where the siding runs back off into the Dolomite works at the far end of Wallnutree viaduct I believe there was room only for a single track here (not double track as shown). It is a very tight squeeze between the near vertical cliff face and the end bridge abutment. Also right at this boundary pinch point a weightbridge was installed in the works rail with measurement instruments set in a little tin hut beside it.
Its been a long time since exploring here as a kid back in the mid sixties so my memory could well be playing tricks though.

Glad you liked my route. Yes I'm aware that there are several errors along the way. But it's only meant to be an impression of the line. Tracking down photos of some parts of the route was difficult, so I mainly work from the OS 25" 1892-1814 map.

@@TheOpenBoatDAFFODIL I know its me having taken a heavy interest in this line over many years and with many past explores in my youth and later that makes me spout out the detail, so sorry about that.
I think you have done a marvelaous job on this project, it just supurb. I can see me watching it over and over. I can't begin to imagine the amount of research that went into its making.
I got well got smitten by the railway bug as a 9 year old kid seeing steam hauled mineral trains running up and down the Llantrisant no 1 branch to Craigeau quarries in the early/mid sixties.
Now that line would make a good project as goods and injured service personnel were regulary transport to the Americans hospital built at Rhydlafar on the Llantrisant Road in WW2 via the Crofft -y-Geneau siding.
Anyway best wishes and keep up the good work.

Well I am enjoying watching the videos of your routes as I am making my way through reading the excellent series of books by John Hodge available through Pen & Sword Books (no association other than as a happy customer) and they give me a visual representation of what is written down and visually available in black and white still pictures. Thanks again.

Excellent and must have taken some time to put together. No criticism what so ever but may I point out that as you come up to the road overbridge (at Crofft -y-Genau Road) just after crossing the Taff Vale Llantrisant no. 1 branch that the sewer overpipe adjacent to this road exists on the bridge nearside and not the far side as shown. Also the the telegraph posts at this point were high up on the righthand opposite bank to fly over the road (and until recently one post was still in place adjacent to this bridge on top of the bank). Also there are no street lamps as shown across this road overbridge.
Just providing a little bit extra detail information, hope you don't mind and sorry to be picky.

Were the two signals after Wenvoe at danger or am I missing something?

    • @TheOpenBoatDAFFODIL
      @TheOpenBoatDAFFODIL  ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, you're correct. Sadly, it was a glitch in the software. Not all the signals work correctly all of the time. It's a Train Simulator thing.... 🙄

What is it with this Ty'n-y-Cacau? It's Ty'n-y-Caeau.
