Not too long ago I've learned about your channel and the "insane amount of work you do on it" (in your own word😂).
First let me say that by using just "insane" you are selling yourself short.
So far and honest to God you are my most trusted laptop reviewer. Always on point and always mindful for us "the users". So as insignificant as it may seem I wanna say thank you for being on TH-cam and doing what you do, and I wish you all prosperity and success.
Second I have a small suggestion! It would be awesome if you could make a video on ryzen laptops (best for each price class, and best overall), also do you think that people should wait for nex gen in perspective to (normal flow users, producers, coders, and heavy users).
    Thank you
    Stay safe.

Hi. Firstly thank you very much. I mean that. Secondly, I actually did alot of Ryzen laptops last year. I'd say the best ones are Lenovo Slim 7 Pro, Lenovo Legion 5, HP Omen. The Ryzen 5000 CPUs are taking time to come in, that being said I do have a Asus G15 sitting next to me that will be the next one I do :)

Great review and thanks for going extra miles to clarify the myths about the processor performance. Notebookcheck also confirmed same about the i5 model of this laptops, beating i7 in other Ultraportables. In other Ultraportables, going for i7 may be due to having the 96EU version of the XE Graphics, but for this, sticking with i5 is the best choice since this having a dedicated GPU.

Yes, consumers need to watch out as Intel is on a big marketing push and many YT creators have promo videos out saying such like, "buy this computer now", without any regard to a proper evaluation. There is nothing wrong with the Envy 14, which seems like a nice laptop, but it is poor value in the world of AMD and Apple Silicon, so really a tough buy for most consumers that know what they want.
The Spectre X360 14 would be a better Intel choice for an Ultrabook as for a similar price you can get a 3k2k OLED display and more flexibility as a 2-in-1?

I know this almost must be subjective, but Josh's report of the number of Excel lines he could comfortably read (about 7:50) was as valuable a metric as I've heard. @Josh - Thanks for the content & details, as always! To answer your question: This laptop is for people like me who want something more portable and stylish than a 15" battlestation, who need an outdoor-capable screen, good battery-life, a microSD card slot, and want slightly better performance than Intel XE graphics (or way better performance than Vega integrated graphics), for light gaming and TH-cam content creation. Since 13-14" AMD thin-and-light laptops are nearly unobtainable right now, this HP Envy 14" is pretty darned close to ideal - for me, if no one else!
I actually *love* almost everything about the Razer Book 13 I just picked up, _except_ the Razer's keyboard is terrible! Shallow key travel with a mushy bottom and if you don't hit the keys in the middle, they don't register. It ruins an otherwise *incredible* laptop with amazing build-quality! (The only other bummer is its lack of dedicated GPU)

From an value standpoint I totally agree with you regarding i5 vs i7. Regarding performance though I want to add my two cents: the idea behind the Tiger Lake i7 is that its able to deliver better performance because it can achieve higher frequencies while using the same power as the i5. Of course, if one lowers power, because of insufficient cooling or other reasons, the result may be an i5 clocking higher than an i7. With the same cooling however the i7 should be able to sustain higher frequencies. Thats because in general i7 get the better quality silicon dies, the ones that are less capacitive and therefore need less voltage to achieve a given frequency. So im curious on what frequencies the i7-1165G7 and i7-1185-G7 would run inside a Laptop that can cool 42 W sustained . I would expect them to run at the advertised 4,1 GHz or 4,3 GHz sustained, which in CB 20/23 equals 4,1/3,8 = 1,08 or 4,3/3,8 = 1,13 the score of the i5. At the time of writing I wasnt be able to find any reviews for the Envy 14 i7-1165G7 unfortunatly.

Hi, Josh. Great review and analysis over Intel, and OEMs shenanigans. I've been following tiger lake throughout 2020 due to pandemic boredom, and I've seen its true potential with the razer book 13. Glad you put it up to video.
Shame you didn't have battery life test of the envy 14, but I could guess how it performs.
Edit: okay I'm an idiot. You mention the battery life. I just wasn't paying attention.

In this case, you're really mostly paying for the slightly better Xe iGPU with 96 enabled execution units on the 1165G7, versus 80 on the 1135G7, plus slightly larger cache.
Is it significant? To me....no, and is why I opted for the 1135G7 when speccing my Yoga S7i.
On that same note, the practice where in order to upgrade to 16GB of RAM, some manufacturers force you to get a step-up processor option? Super-annoying and needs to stop. If Lenovo allows me to spec my machine with 16GB of memory whilst keeping the 1135G7, there's no technical reason others can't other than fatter profit margins.

I would really appreciate some help and advice here.
I'm having an extremely hard time deciding on a laptop to buy. My budget is $1500 - $2000 though I'm willing to stretch it a little more if I see more value.
I don't play any games whatsoever. I use photoshop a lot and recently I have been interested and learning to do some video editing and audio production with Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Audition. Everything works fine on my current laptop except for Premiere Pro which won't even run. It would also be nice if Photoshop and my audio production software would run faster.
I currently have an Ultrabook 2-in-1 with touch screen (Dell Inspiron 13 7378, 2018 version) and it's very outdated for me and just doesn't meet my needs any more with it's integrated Intel UHD 620 GPU. You have to understand I didn't even pick this laptop to buy it was simply a $400 bargain 2 years ago in a brand new condition and I just ended up liking it until I started looking into video editing. I don't want to invest in a desktop setup now since I move a lot, a laptop is a must for me.
Last year I was very excited about Huawei Matebook Pro X (2020 version) and I'm so glad I didn't buy it! But then I got excited about the new Dell XPS 15 model with touch screen and GTX 1650 Ti until Nvidia announced their RTX 3000 series so I decided to wait for the new laptop models with the new GPUs.
The dilemma I have right now is this:
1- My laptop is not good enough for my needs by any means, I have been waiting for quite sometime now but I need to buy a better performing laptop sooner than later.
2- I use the touch screen on my laptop quite a lot, the tablet mode and being able to flip the screen 360 degrees isn't very important, but I got very used to a touch screen that I'm just having a hard time accept a laptop without on.
3- I considered XPS 17 9700 with RTX 2060 and I love that device, except I don't feel comfortable spending over $3k which is a lot over my budget and I still won't be getting the RTX 300 series.
4- It's really hard to find a laptop that fits these needs. I have recently been interested in the Zephyrus G15 GA503. Yet grew disappointed because of the soldered ram slot (I understand I'll need to upgrade the ram to get a better video editing experience) and the lack of even a bad webcam to be used while in transit in an airport for example. The lack of touch screen isn't a big issue though.
5- I have considered Asus flex 13x but I don't like the proprietary eGPU
I understand I'm comparing apples to oranges when I put tiny sleek Ultrabooks side to side with Performance gaming laptops. I'm just lost between the two. I don't care about FPS since I'm not a gamer. but I need a good display in a sleek portable laptop. What are my options and what're you suggestions?
Should I get something of what's available now? (and what would that be?) or should I wait a bit more for new things that might come out soon? (Will Dell even make a new XPS with RTX 300 series this year?)
Thank you for reading and for any replies in advance!

@@CaptainScorpio24 I guess what I'm really hoping/waiting for now is for Dell releasing a new XPS with the same design of last year just putting in an RTX 3000 in it, even if it's a RTX 3060 Max Q. Hi Josh- I’m not tech savvy so plz pardon me. I’m buying a spectre 13.3. Are you saying for a savings diff of $230, Id be smarter to buy the i5-1135 w/ 8gb RAM, rather than the i7-1165 w/16gb RAM? I’m a casual user- no editing or gaming. I just want a fast laptop, for surfing and TH-cam/Netflix, and love the smaller form factor and 16:9 aspect ratio. I had ordered the i7 because it was the only way to get 16 RAM, & thought the i7 would also be better in general. Will I notice any real difference? Or should I change to the i5 /8gb RAM and save $230? Would you order 512 SSD w or w/o the 32gb Optane ?

I do not agree for the "1650Ti not being able to run triple A titles from several years ago"
    I have a laptop with a 9300H and a GTX 1650 (not Ti).
This laptop is able to deliver 60fps gameplay in most games at Medium to High settings (playing at Ultra makes no sense, even for High end desktops). The only game that my Laptop isn't able to play at 1080p60 is Cyberpunk 2077, though with Low settings (that still looks really good) I'm able to get around 55fps average.
Not even mentionning that the "The GPU will not do anything more for you in esports titles" might be true in a game like DoTA which is extremely easy to run, but the iGPU will struggle in games like csgo, Valorant, Overwatch and even League of Legends. In these games, the 1650Ti will be able to provide stable 60fps gameplay (which is all that most people need anyway as long as it is stable), and even stable 120fps gameplay if you use an external monitor through HDMI or Thunderbolt 4.
Same goes for produtivity. Not anyone does edit videos, but even then having a discrete GPU is always a nice thing to have. For 3D applications however, this is a necessary component to have (for SolidWorks, Blender, all that sort of stuff)
Otherwise, great video, keep up the good work

Hi Josh, I also commented on one of your reddit post re tiger lake laptops and external display refresh rate. I have a LG 38wn95c-W (3840 x 1600) and would like to get a laptop that can take advantage of the monitors high refresh rate (144Hz). This has ruled out the lenovo yoga 14s / slim 7 pro (AMD) since it does not have thunderbolt.
I am deciding between the intel version of slim 7 pro or the envy 14, but I am also reading various reports of various tigerlake having issues with high res/refresh rate. Is there acually an output limit with the tiger lake cpu / iris graphics card? I am based in Australia, so will be ordering overseas (US or China) which makes it nearly impossible to return the item if there is any issue. Your help is much appreciated.

There are reasons to get a laptop with an i7 processor other than higher boost speeds, Josh. They have more L3 cache and, usually, better integrated graphics chips. I'd always rather have an i7 that's throttling to i5 speeds than an i5 - hell, I normally run my i7-5500u at the speed of an i3-5005u because that's the speed at which it's most efficient. Running it at that clock speed, along with undervolting, nets me a couple hours more of battery life. But my laptop(a Lenovo Yoga 14 Ultrabook with a Geforce 940M) can boost the CPU to it's full speed indefinitely if I call upon it to do so. And it has a beefy enough cooling system for this CPU(~30 watts at full boost) and a 35W dGPU. That's where the real rip-off is, according to me. Ultrabooks of this size in the past have had a proper cooling solution, so why are the modern ones equipped with such finicky ones that can't even handle the full thermal load of the CPU?

The issue is that the industry (mainly Intel) is pushing it too hard to build a building when the foundation can't tolerate the weight. First, the whole concept of cores and parallelism exists because they realized the flattened out curve of Moore's law. Second, IT IS TIME to pivot and make RISC the mainstream architecture of personal computers for god sake. Third, when comparing performance, there are way more variables that come into the equation that most people don't consider. Fourth, Amdahl's law holds, so add more cores and you see the marginal benefit die out. In the end, with the infrastructure that companies like Intel and AMD have, they could totally change the game by freaking pressing the switch button. Also, it wouldn't hurt the software development, it can be taken care of easier than figuring out how to cool down a freaking i7.

I know most people won't do this but I find that beefing up the power delivery and cooling system does wonders for getting a more sustained power out of these laptops. Often manufacturers cheapen out on not just things like heatpipes, that's bad enough but cooling over rectifiers and thermal grease. Something that is so cheap it's almost questionable of why. Yet they do it and often.. Even on an expensive device like the XPS or Latitude 7400 series Dell has cheapened out the cooling. So but why do it even if your not worried about say maximum performance? Easy. Maximum battery life. The hotter rectifiers get the more fans will turn on just like with the cpu thus eating in to precious battery life and yes lowering your performance to meet certain theasholds. This could cost hours of battery life in the long run. Just something as simple as reapplying thermal paste can make a huge difference. Best of all it's cheap. Thermal pads are pretty cheap as is thernal paste. Beefing up a cheap copper cooler is fairly cheap too just that one takes soms research and know how. I certainly don't recommend you just start opening up your laptop if you don't know what your doing anyway. So if what I am saying interests you please research it a little first.
