Perfect timing for this video. I have been looking st these hammocks and trying to read about the different ones. Was wonderful to see them actually hung up and used! Safari it is since I do kayak camping! Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you for this excellent comparison. I kept switching my cart back and forth, and went with the Safari. I mostly kayak or car camp. Comfort is harder as each year comes around. Will find out this week
BushFox I think you’ve made the right choice for kayaking. I’m traveling southern Norway by car right now and the Safari is such a piece of heaven when night comes. I wake up so comfortable and rested 😀
Although I have not slept in it yet (all my trips have been pretty cold since purchase, and I slept in the Forester) it had gone on a few camping and local day trips. It is indeed superbly comfortable, even when used as a seat. My old $40 parachute hammock does not allow for comfortable side sitting, as it digs into the hamstrings badly. With my tiny stove nearby under the shelter-like tarp, it really is a hanging camp itself. I added 2 large storage pockets since there is so much room aloft. Then for my daughter’s 9th birthday I bought her the scout zip. It should be good forever as I doubt she will be tall. I ended up putting the second storage pocket on her ridgeline, as i never really ended up using that much overhead storage. She uses it to put her shoes in. These 2 purchases were some of the best I have made. Hennessey even sent me an extra set of free xl snake skins when i said the regular ones were really tight fitting. Their products and customer service have made us into a Hennessey family. You really can’t go wrong, if you find the style for your method.
@@chriscon8463it sleeps very well. I have used it as low as 0 degrees Celsius with the radiant bubble pad. I just got a jungle explorer in camo with a hex fly. I gotta say, the comfort factor is so good I doubt I will use the Safari much now. I will use it as a loaner. It uses the same size bubble pad but can also use the supershelter system, which i will order soon. That with the bubble pad should be suitable for very cold trips. They are both very large hammocks but I am just 172cm (5’8”). The packed size and span between trees is where they make a big difference. The Explorer can be deployed in a narrower space, but can also deal with a 20’ span without issue. I had a hard time finding a wide enough gap between trees many times with the Safari. While the Safari is definitely the king of comfort, I am unsure a man of my height can justify the packed volume. Even though the Jungle Explorer has a double layer bottom, the material is thinner so it packs a lot smaller.
Just ordered my second Hennessy hammock - this time the Explorer zip. Appreciated your video - a good comparison...however more important, your hat was perfect. Hockey Canada runs in my family's blood.
I am not sure, but manufacturer said, that correct lying position is when you have zipper on your right hand side. Those hammocks are asymmetrical! So when you are „up-side-down” in hammock you have less room for your head and torso and much more space for legs😄
I always have my right side facing the zipper and have loads of room ... but I’m not sleeping on my stomach ... I gues no matter what the instructions say, just test what works for you 😀
It seems that over the years Hennessy hammock did a few changes here and there, and looking at the specs for both the expedition, explorer xl and safari xl they should all have the same size tarp, 143''x120''/ 363x305cm, at least as of recent years. Just gotten my explorer xl in the mail, and will be using it next month. I have used a highlander crusader for the last 5 years, and having hung the explorer in my living room, its quite a bit bigger, both the hammock and tarp.
Been wondering which one would be the best fit for me. Been slowly putting together a bug out/camping bag. Be mostly for spring and summer but would also like to be comfortable in the fall. Doubt any hammock would be comfortable in the winter (in Wisconsin) but if there is a way stay warm in winter, please let me know. Have always disliked ground tents. Have to pack so much more for comfort and in that sense a hammock just makes more sense!. Subscribed l! Thank you much for taking the time to make this video!
I have camped with these hammocks with my daughter in cold Norway during winter. We had snow and -12 celcius. We used exped synmat 9cm insulated sleeping pads, and we had proper winter sleeping bags, and we pre-heated the bags with boiling water in our nalgene drinking bottles. We did stay warm :-) Also just did a motorcycle adventure, sleeping in the hammock every night, rain and thunderstorms. The larger tarp on the Safari made life easy. I also use tents on some trips, but will always choose the hammock when I have the choice
Nice video… I like your comparison of the 3 sizes…. But just one question…. Why did you hang your hammocks so high?…..lowering the hammock is easier to get in and out of, plus when in bad weather a high hammock has a good chance of getting wet from rain even with a rainfly…
Love this video. I just purchased an Expedition classic (the one with entry in the bottom) and I do regret not checking these kinds of videos before. I wish I had got the one with a zip insted of zipperless, since I probably need an underquilt. The bottom entry makes it kind of impossible to also use the uq. But I must ask - how are you attatching the hammock to the tree? Because in Hennessy's own videos, you are supposed to do it with knots. But you are using something else and it looks so much easier and also seems to give you some extra length since your rope is not tied up. Please help a newbie out :) Thank you!
I used some rappelling rings and carabiners. But lately I’ve stopped using it to save weight and space, with a bit of practice I now find it just as easy only using the rope like in the Hennessy instructions. If you don’t like the bottom entrance you can probably sell it and get another one just like new secondhand. I’ve bought 2 of the 3 Hennessy hammocks secondhand 😀
Bought the explorer and sent it back without ever using it the tarps are way to small. Went with the hammock gear wanderlust kit and love it. All of the hennessy hammocks tarps are to small.
Hei. Takk for informativ video.

eg pleier å henge webbingene rundt trærne litt over hodehøyde.

When comparing hammock sizes, it would be really useful if you would mention your own height. That way we can get a better idea of what the fit is. Someone smaller might fit okay in the small hammock. So many reviews but nobody ever bothers to mention this most important thing.
You can always get the hex rainfly and have more cover on the smaller hammock. You can order it instead of the standard
