I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes discipline lately, or more precisely, what makes us do stuff. I think there is an extra factor in that equation, and it’s something like your ability to ignore/repress/overcome friction, it detracts from that feeling of friction by making it less potent. Let's call it willpower. So the equation would be something like Discipline = Goal Importance + Pursuit pleasure - ( Pursuit pain - Willpower ). This is a factor that can be trained over time. What do you think?

The Discipline Equation: Discipline = Importance of the Goal + Psychological Enjoyment - Psychological Cost. Example: Simon Sinek taking the bins out involves high importance (avoiding fines) and low enjoyment, but the high importance ensures the task is done.

We do this risk reward assessment subconsciously all the time. Going back it would be "how important is it that I get to this honey in order not to starve" vs "how many bee stings am I willing to take for it". That decision would have been made almost instantly. Now days, I'm guessing none of the viewers are starving and bee stings are quite abstract.

@Chris Williamson , Hey Chris !! 07:48 , You guys were talking about Steven’s Meditation Practice, How his Why wasn't Strong enough !! & the evidence on meditation as well (It was incomplete). Could you Clarify more on it , specially more on the “evidence part of meditation” ? Thanks !!
Something is missing from the discipline equation, which is the perceived ability to achieve the desired goal: your sense of hope and the belief that the pursuit ultimately will be fruitful.
Dopamine - Limbic Friction Motivation is the initial dopaminergic indicator for pursuit. Pleasure from pursuing a task is the continuous outflow of dopamine. Limbic friction is just a word used for the hump of commencing a task.
I like how he philosophically organized it. (Big Why)+(Enjoyment; which I would say is correlated with Big Why)-(Resistance). Meaning, underlying all this, Nietzsche’s quote stands true: “with a large enough why, a man can endure any how.”
Also explains why most people who are worse off strive to be better. Their why is much more painful than other people’s. That’s when they got their lows and strive to go further. And pain will biologically stick to memory harder than pleasure.
Chris, think about how it all started with “Scotty doean’t know”. Started as a shallow soundtrack and became so profound understanding about relationships
I look at discipline slightly different and I sympathize more with Mark Manson's and Mike Tyson's definition. Mike Tyson - "Discipline is something you hate doing but doing it like you love it." For example, I absolutely HATE running and working out. It's uncomfortable and I hate the burn. However, I run 4 days a week and do calisthenics 3 days a week anyway because aside from mental growth/health and willpower, my career goal supersedes the temporary pain in that moment. To hear others like Phelps, Bolt, Ali, Tyson, etc. rightly admit that they hated training but did it anyway, well, resume speaks for itself. I want to win...and that's why I do it. Tim Grover reminds me of what it takes to win. You'd be surprise how many people look at me in a crazy manner when I run in the rain at 30 degrees with a wind chill of 21 degrees but as Goggins said, "they won't understand so who gives a fuck."
I think the discipline of enduring the grind you choose is very different, but no more admirable or remarkable, that the grind and pain imposed upon one because of circumstance.
I agree the what is accomplished is equally impressive. However if you are driven by negative emotion then your why may not be ultimately conducive to long term mental and physical health.
note: i think there are like X different type of people, for some this work, for others some1 elses method works, try and test until u find out what works for u, and in some cases, works today, but when u down, then it dosent work, so find what works when u are down. very cool
Does it start as you loving the goal & its journey (no matter the sacrifice), then in time you ultimately loving the outcomes of the goal more... & doing the prev. steps to maintain the goal knowing they are obligatory, so less loved.

Great episode ! Discipline path to success . Abdelillah Saggay , tech content creator from Morocco !

Discipline== importance of goal ❤
Wow cool video!! So insightful 😊🎉
Something is missing from the discipline equation, which is the perceived ability to achieve the desired goal: your sense of hope and the belief that the pursuit ultimately will be fruitful.
When man becomes desperate or uncomfortable ,progress begins.- Dr Dk Olukoya
Actually starting into Junger’s “On Pain” this morning 😊
Dopamine - Limbic Friction
Motivation is the initial dopaminergic indicator for pursuit.
And pain will biologically stick to memory harder than pleasure.
how to build unbreakable discipline = turn off internet in your life
Very well said 😅
My two favorite hosts collide!
Chris, think about how it all started with “Scotty doean’t know”. Started as a shallow soundtrack and became so profound understanding about relationships
When you get direct rewards for your input correlating with the output, you'll grind.
Nice lesson yar just inbelivable
Incredible!!! ❤🫀♥️ Thank you 💪🏼✨
*save to watch later*
Discipline= (importance of goal + phycological enjoyment) - phycological cost

You are amazing ❤
Amazing, thanks...
Bravo bro👏👏👏

I think my question is “how do you care about (the) grind”?
Discipline, Discipline,Discipline 🧡
I think the discipline of enduring the grind you choose is very different, but no more admirable or remarkable, that the grind and pain imposed upon one because of circumstance.
I agree the what is accomplished is equally impressive. However if you are driven by negative emotion then your why may not be ultimately conducive to long term mental and physical health.
Anybody Here for rebuild their self
note: i think there are like X different type of people, for some this work, for others some1 elses method works, try and test until u find out what works for u, and in some cases, works today, but when u down, then it dosent work, so find what works when u are down. very cool
Awesome ❤
Thank you so matche for the vediou
Does it start as you loving the goal & its journey (no matter the sacrifice), then in time you ultimately loving the outcomes of the goal more... & doing the prev. steps to maintain the goal knowing they are obligatory, so less loved.
i fw with this guy.
