00:01 Focus on the pain and struggle to align with what you can accomplish.
01:27 Discipline equals the importance of the goal and psychological enjoyment minus the psychological cost.
02:46 Health is the first priority for everything I love and care about.
04:05 Discipline is the key to effective time management and life choices.
05:23 Discipline equation is crucial for staying on track
06:40 Discipline equation: behavior will occur if positive outcome minus friction exceeds zero.
07:56 Many people are driven by pain rather than pleasure.
09:21 Deep shame and insecurity drove me to obsessiveness.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes discipline lately, or more precisely, what makes us do stuff. I think there is an extra factor in that equation, and it’s something like your ability to ignore/repress/overcome friction, it detracts from that feeling of friction by making it less potent. Let's call it willpower. So the equation would be something like Discipline = Goal Importance + Pursuit pleasure - ( Pursuit pain - Willpower ).
This is a factor that can be trained over time. What do you think?

Chip on my shoulder because of being called stupid by my family and husband…. drove me to get my Masters and then a PhD. That was to prove to myself that I was OK. There is no 'revenge'. their comments were throwaway. they won't come to worship you for proving them wrong. You can use their disses for motivation but only insofar as you find what YOU want to do for your own reasons and enjoyment. because that magical day where they say "oh we were so wrong about you" will never come and if that's the only thing that is keeping you doing what you're doing, that is a thin reason, a house of cards

The discipline equation discussed here is a powerful way to understand how our behaviors are influenced. It's all about balancing the importance of a goal, the psychological enjoyment we derive from pursuing it, and the psychological cost. This equation, as explained by Stephen, can apply to various aspects of our lives, from fitness to creative pursuits. It's a reminder that discipline often involves finding the right balance between these factors. Just as Mark Manson's quote highlights, it's crucial to consider what pain we're willing to endure in our pursuit of meaningful goals. This insight from Stephen resonates with me and echoes the teachings of @LisaHaisha, who emphasizes the importance of self-discovery and self-acceptance in our journey to live authentically and purposefully.

I really connect to where Steven realised all the time management techniques were pointless without a core issue being addressed that facilities them all. I’ve come to the realisation that no amount of techniques for taking action and pursuing what you want to pursue are going to work if you don’t see a point to your self and life. If you perceive yourself as being utterly pointless, you will never see the point in any atomic habit, building and executing any routine, because the foundation is missing and it’s all inherently pointless. Your view of yourself has to be that you, and therefore improving you, are worth it and will mean anything in the world

    • @333angeleyes
      @333angeleyes 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

But ultimately that (at least for me) is the BIGGEST cause for a lack of self discipline-the why.
Why is this important? Why does this benefit me? Why should I keep enduring discomfort to achieve this?
It is easy to say that exercise, eating healthy, saving for retirement, et cetera all will benefit you a few months or, a few years in the future but, THAT'S THE PROBLEM! All those benefits will not immediately be seen and humans need to experience immediately rewards and validations to continue to do something; especially something uncomfortable.

    • @Sully_one
      @Sully_one 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@333angeleyesSo here the why is the regret that you will feel after years of neglecting that part because it didn't give you short term reward.
Which is one of the biggest pains you can experience in your life, regret.
Knowing that you could have been so much, but you were too "lazy" & "unmotivated" to become it.
Life is very comfortable in the modern time, the exact reason why we have so many depressed and sad people
Because they held on to their comfort for so long, that over time they don't have anything going on in their life. Nothing to persue, nothing to wake up excited for, shameful to look at themselves in the mirror
Pick your hard. Do it now because that's the only time that you get to choose.

    something you've shown discipline in:
    1. how much it matters - /10
    2. enjoyment from the pursuit - /10
    3. amount of friction involved - /10

The "pain" argument is not transferable nor a static framework. If ever you want to consider using it, it has to be dynamic. Pain or resilience thresholds are different for many people. And they benefit and hinder different aspects. We complicate sh*t way to much. If you honestly believe/know that, it must/should be done or that you need/want it, you'll actually do it. Using the rubbish bin example; if you do not want to sit in a house of sh*t and disgust, then you will clean your f-ing house. You also know, it needs to be done otherwise x,y,z cost will be incurred.

We do this risk reward assessment subconsciously all the time. Going back it would be "how important is it that I get to this honey in order not to starve" vs "how many bee stings am I willing to take for it". That decision would have been made almost instantly. Now days, I'm guessing none of the viewers are starving and bee stings are quite abstract.

Also explains why most people who are worse off strive to be better. Their why is much more painful than other people’s. That’s when they got their lows and strive to go further. And pain will biologically stick to memory harder than pleasure.

I think the discipline of enduring the grind you choose is very different, but no more admirable or remarkable, that the grind and pain imposed upon one because of circumstance.

I agree the what is accomplished is equally impressive. However if you are driven by negative emotion then your why may not be ultimately conducive to long term mental and physical health.

It's about pain reallocation. Imagine a box: On one side you have the pain associated with hard work, discipline, training, commitment... On the other side you have the pain associated with sucking, laziness, not living up to your potential. The bar can move towards either side but it's not about getting rid of pain, but about how much of each kind of pain are you willing to take.

Does it start as you loving the goal & its journey (no matter the sacrifice), then in time you ultimately loving the outcomes of the goal more... & doing the prev. steps to maintain the goal knowing they are obligatory, so less loved.

Wow, really interesting episode. I would even add social conformity (+) or social resistance (-) could be added to the discipline equation. Social pressure is a powerful extrinsic force in its own right. Like if you agree.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 🤔 *The most important question in life is: What pain are you willing to endure for something worthwhile? Aligning with the pain and struggle leads to greater accomplishments.*
01:25 🧠 *Discipline equation: Discipline equals the importance of the goal to you plus the psychological enjoyment in the pursuit, minus the psychological cost of the pursuit.*
02:49 💪 *Importance of the goal, psychological enjoyment, and psychological cost influence discipline. Example: Going to the gym consistently is influenced by the perceived importance, enjoyment, and minimal friction.*
05:11 ⏳ *Discipline in the context of time and death. Understanding the scarcity of time is crucial for effective time management, and discipline is the underlying factor for successful time allocation.*
06:48 🔄 *Setting up an environment to reduce friction and increase discipline. Placing things in a way that makes it harder to avoid them encourages consistent practice or behavior.*
07:57 🔥 *The role of pain and the "why" in driving discipline. Whether driven or dragged by past experiences, understanding the source of motivation is key to sustaining discipline.*
09:21 🎧 *Epidemic Sound sponsorship message. The importance of quality sound design in videos and the benefits of using Epidemic Sound for copyright-free music and sound effects.*

This is a familiar message. My question is how does one increase your why? At times, it feels like I am unable to increase my why and keep it high. I've learned how to reduce friction, but not increase why.
