    The nice thing about tie dying is you can over dye it if you aren’t happy with the result. I’ve done this several times on tshirts and it turns out great. You can even use other colors. 😊👍

      A friend suggested that! I ran out of time to try it in this video, but maybe I will try it yet 🤔

    As a potter & fiber artist, I think it’s a great concept and came out great-even if it wasn’t your vision. I will be trying this with fiber reactive dyes. As for the fringe, I will band up sections and probably roll them & re-band. For greater resist, use wider or multiple bands. Wooden craft sticks work well as a resist too. Thank you for sharing. 😁

      Thank you! And I completely agree, it can be frustrating when they don’t but it’s all part of the process!

    Cool experiment. 😎 Thanks for showing it.

    I have to say, I do like the end result. The pattern created by having rolled the wall hanging was cool. I do think that it would have looked better if the dye had soaked in more and given a richer end result, but I do like it. I don't think the top looks like an accident at all and I feel like if you added some embroidery or needle felting, or even some yarn flowers, you could make a really nice wall hanging. You've definitely enticed me to want to try dyeing a wall hanging. Future project idea.

      I contemplated off camera for a long time about what I could add, and tried laying a few different things on it, and while they could totally look good, they just weren't my aesthetic so I just decided to accept that I don't like it lol. That being said, I may come back to it, try dyeing it again, or taking it apart and using the materials on another piece. 😊

      @@spruceandlinen I completely respect that. It's okay if it's not your aesthetic. I just wanted to let you know that the end result wasn't a failure. It just wasn't what you wanted. Thanks for sharing. It helps. Would like to see another dye attempt in the future. If you ever feel up to it.

    I actually love it! I like the lighter color that it came out as❤️

      I was so surprised how much it lightened up, though maybe it wouldn’t have as much if I had left it another 2 hours haha

    I love the fringe and the loops at the top! I'd add some more dye to the woven section. It's very pretty though

    Oh Wow! Very interesting. I love how it looked when it was still wet but kind of bummed about the finished version as well. Horizontal, as you said, may be cooler as well as thinner yarn.

      Same, the colours were co much more vibrant before rinsing, probably should've waited the full 8 hours haha 🤷‍♀️

    It’s still kinda cute 🙂 The first time we do things it often doesn’t work out but then we know better for next time - I hope you do another tie dye experiment or even add upon this one somehow ☺️

    • @spruceandlinen
      @spruceandlinen  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely, the nature of experiments is they don't always work out! And that's okay, 👍

    I think horizontal works have been great, too. Wonder how going a different route entirely on the fringe would have turned out, like twisting the fringe or clumping it into balls. Please do further experiments!

    Tie Dye is supposed to be fun, and random, and letting go of control, just seeing what comes out. Maybe Tie Dye just isn't your thing, all things aren't for all people. I like the piece, but then, I'm an old hippie. It's awesome to try new things, and I appreciate that you shared your experience with us. Take care, be well. Oh, big wooden beads on the fringe, that would be cool.

      I haven't done more traditional tie dyeing, but I did a lot of dyeing when I was in college for Fibre Arts, but we did shibori techniques which I loved. I think what makes tie dye/shibori more beautiful to me, though, is more repeats in the "design". This piece was so small that it just looked completely random instead of random mixed with pattern, which I would prefer. That said, if the lines had been horizontal I think I could've appreciated the complete randomness more lol

    Fiber reactive dyes like that take time to bond with the fiber! The longer you leave the dye on, the stronger the color. Usually for tie dye you need to leave it 24 hours, any shorter and the color doesn't have time to stick. The dry powder is also not super safe to have open without a respirator/mask on - for a quick project like this it is less scary, but the particles are super small and not great for lungs in the long run

    • @spruceandlinen
      @spruceandlinen  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should have specified that I have dyed with fibre reactive dyes, just not in a more typical tie dye way, or with a kit like this. We did a lot of dyeing when I was in college, however it's been nearly a decade since I've used fibre reactive dyes so there are some things I am re-learning. Yes, I know a mask is a safer way to work with powder dye, if I had to open a new packet and dump it in the bottle I definitely would've worn one/if I had been mixing all the dyes. Still not great to risk it, which I won't again.

      @@spruceandlinen sorry, didn't mean to sound so intense in my comment. I was too excited to give unsolicited advice 😅 I'm excited to see future attempts! And very curious if ice dye would have good effects and allow you to put color where you want it a little more! i do both dyeing and weaving so this has been on the "eventually try it" list for a while and it's cool to see it would work!

      Totally!! That’s why I really wish I had made the lines horizontal haha
