BP was one of my former Lit professor H. Bloom's favourite jazz musicians. He would reminesce often about catching BP play at the Vanguard and other NYC venues in the mid-50s, telling us how it was so much of an education hearing him play and about appreciating the musical artistry BP put into his live playing .

I honestly didn't appreciate this record when I first heard it here in Dec 2020. It's the kind of thing that grows on you. It has indeed grown on me. It is also pleasing to me to hear strong shades of Thelonious' in Bud's playing. Beautiful.

Actually, you are hearing Mary Lou Williams' influence in both Monk and Bud. She was their mentor. Bud's brother, Richie, was no slouch on piano either. Sadly he passed in a car crash with Clifford Brown when Richie's wife ran the car in a ditch on an overnight trip from Philly to Chicago.

I agree. for me, it's the raw genius and vulnerability on display. the piano isn't great, the quality isn't great, but his spirit shines through.

@@jman12849 Studied privately with him for 3 years from 1986 to 1989. Learned how to play his concept theory of fourths. I learned how to voice chords well from him. His philosophy was each one teach one. Once I asked him how to reharmonize and he said don’t worry about it because it will come.
His dad wrote lyrics to Fats Waller songs. After studying with Walter Bishop Jr. I studied with another legendary pianist Jaki Byard. I have video on TH-cam where I show how Walter Bishop Jr. showed me how to play “Misty “.
Lessons with both were amazing. We would talk for hours.

It's too painful listening to his voice, due to too much troubled and severe life events. Most of them harshly ended in abysmal, cruel and careless hospitalizations. All this killed someone among the greatest and smartest Jazz musicians ever, as well as inventor of the first BeBop stream... Congratulations to the 1950s' health "care" ...!
It's nothing short of a tragedy what happened to Bud. He'll never be forgotten for his contributions to music. A real tortured artist.
in Miles‘s autobiography, he says that bud got beat up by a cop and afterwords was never the same. He would show up at Miles‘s house, not say a word, just sit at the piano for hours not even playing. many years later when Miles was playing in Paris, bud was in the club and came up and played some piano and according to Miles, it was terrible. Miles felt so bad, he tried to cover up for him saying “bud, you shouldn’t play when you’re drunk.“ A real sad story, what an amazing piano player.

It's irrefutable that Bud Powell suffered great trauma at the hands of American institutions, and his mental health suffered greatly as a result. I don't wish to reduce/minimize this reality, it's indeed a great tragedy. However, I would implore anyone who finds only pain in Powell's voice; for I find a great joy to live in it! What is joy or pain SUPPOSED to sound like? Is Powell expressing consciously or unconsciously a tortured inner life (as critics and marketing have long framed his work and his person) or to what extent is it simply the sounds of Bud being Bud? Though Bud Powell was literally tortured and literally an artist, I think belaboring the narrative of the tortured artist at every turn is reductive of a person who's life and work clearly extended far beyond that frame. Let Bud be Bud! His deviance needs no excuse from society.

I always wonder what those great improvisors were thinking when they played. Were they thinking about the chord changes and what they were doing or were their minds somewhere else and the music was coming out somehow?I know Sonny Rollins said "You can't think and play at the same time". That's a weird concept to me.

That's Francis Paudras, the Frenchman who became Powell's caretaker and best friend. He's the one responsible for all these home sessions being recorded!
He wrote a book about his experiences with Bud Powell called "Dance of the Infidels: A Portrait of Bud Powell". Gives a great glimpse into the jazz scene in Paris at the time, as well as plenty of anecdotes of Powell himself.

Actually appreciate hearing his voice , cause I took it to be emotional gesticulation, just after learning of him having been submitted to repeated electroshock therapy which I'm now imagining intermingling with his personhood...maybe I'm not accurate, I hope I don't over report how he accounted his abilities but... hearing in the French doc Inner Exile how he was experienced as a more strayed off persona from his treatment from a friend that knew him beforehand, the possibilites just seem scattered to me as I listen to this. But you know, I can see how it can be a glaring inconsistency otherwise to listen to...
