I’ve been playing for 1hr and the crispness is outstanding. Normally there’s blur drom the graphics having to be turned down but this game runs and looks like it was made for the switch. I’m honestly so amazed and taken back by how great it all works! Definitely run out and buy this one!

I still sing Leave Her Jonny all the time. The shanties and tavern music are so immersive. Different taverns play different songs depending what nation occupies them. BF is my second favorite AC game after Odessey. Rouge is a great bonus. Though perhaps after another playthrough on the Switch BF might regain its title.
I'll happily buy this again, IV is my favourite of the ac games, rogue was a nice addition to the story (felt more like an expansion but still a great time). I agree the animus sections are pretty guff 😂
The Shanties are awesome in this game. There are songs that date back to within the renaissance and are more period than many songs played at a Renaissance faire. I’m glad if you find and catch the collectible music sheets, that it presents you with the lyrics so you can see and hear how it is sung. For a game of parallel fantasy, it certainly has some actual educational value in some things where even a Google search is not as keen to bringing up the information. Particularly the shanties. They really did their due research for them.
Speaking of research, I have to love the attention to detail they did with storm systems, weather, and boat physics. Being a person who has sailed the eastern shore, thanks to my Dad having a sailboat, I really appreciate some of the dangers you face not even against other ship Captains. The weather. I like that often the wind and waves have a tendency to push boats towards land masses, and more importantly, those rocks that surround many land masses. During a storm, that is really prevalent, just like real life. I remember one time actually doing a reaction I actually learned in real life to save my boat from hull damage. Being caught in a storm, making a quick decision noticing the storm and waves were going to throw my ship right up against those rocks if I don’t do something soon. Some people, not in the know, will try all kinds of maneuvers, but that is to no avail if you are too close. Immediately dropping the sales, however, did the trick and I was able to control the situation so quickly afterwards and kept my boat from having an accident. What I loved about this is that this is something I learned from real life and not a videogame. I was able to use that solution for a situation that was not simulated in Sid Meier’s Pirates! Regardless of the other influences.
I don't usually buy a game at launch. But when I do, it's after I've watched a SwitchUp review. So glad that it's a good port. Now I can sink some ships while on the toilet.

From what I can gather in the North American physical release, Assassins Creed 4 is on the cartridge but the DLC and Rogue requires a download. That being said the license is on the disc so there is no download code. As such if you buy a used copy you still get the DLC and AC: Rogue, you just have to download it from the Nintendo eshop.
dav1ll3 I do! I have played this in handheld about 90% of the time and love it. Chews through the battery tho so grab yourself a spare cable coz you’ll need it after about 3 hours. Totally worth it.
I actually liked the countering mechanics in the older ac games like these, it was special to the series, where you could go on massive massacres, it’s more like other rpg’s in odyssey and probably in the new Vikings one. It’s just different now
Good call. It's my personal favourite Assassins Creed game and although not as big as odyssey or Origins, it's still a massive game. You're in for a treat.
I’m not even a mega fan, but since AC4‘s release when I was 12 and over the years, I’ve played and 100% it on the PS3, Xbox One and PS4! I don’t even really try to complete it fully, but I have so much fun each time that by the end I only ever had a few stuff to do. Since I’m on term break, it’s dumb, but I thought I’d do it a fourth and final time!
When this came out I was very excited seeing as I really enjoyed Black Flag on PS4 back in the day. This review made me buy it again because you guys are right, it runs exceptionally well on the Switch! I’m totally hooked (wink wink) again! It’s great it comes with Rogue and all the DLC as well because I’ve never played those before. This will keep me busy for a long time.

I agree with you Mark Black Flag is the best one... spent 10s of hours playing that on Wii U sinking ships an storming islands great game. Love the legendary ghost ships in the corners only ever managed to sink two of them. Need to sink all of them. Will pick this up to try sink them all
Hi, I saw this game combo on sale at a store. I searched for reviews and the first reviewer was so bad. Did not do well on describing the gameplay. The feel overall was like: I’ve never played this series before and the controls are weird. Uggh. I was turned off and went home. Then I found your review. Damn, I wish I saw yours when I was there. You had a clear and consistent review. You provided detailed reasons for your scores. I appreciate that. You gave opinion on docked versus handheld on various situations. I’m trying to do more handheld than docked so an opinion of how this handles is awesome. I will be going back to pick this combo game. Great review. Keep at it.
Currently on sale for US eshop only $20. I want to get a physical copy so I at least have Black Flag in the event the eshop goes down some day. The larger my digital library has gotten over the last few years the more I'm leaning into physical releases especially if they aren't that much more or are in some cases cheaper than the eShop. Looks like a great game and a good starting point for the series. I've never played an Assassin's Creed game but I think this will be my first with Black Flag.
Someone needs to port over the the recent Deus Ex games!!! Just to add to the great ported RPGs the switch has going for it at the moment. Same with Fallout 3 and NV, never been more keen for a game then I am for The Outer Worlds, and the Outer Wilds would be an insane game to port over too.
I love this port, just started it today and i’m having a lot of fun. But next we need Ubi to do us a solid and port over Ezio Trilogy & Far Cry 3 please

This review made my mind up. Thanks for going into so much details. I’d only played as Ezio in Brotherhood on the Mac. I did really enjoy the story telling and difficulty progression of the game. Looking forward to playing this on the switch.
wow😍 remember when i play black flag. its somehow a really good assassins creed. the first you can dive. but what i like the most too is it shows that the switch is a really strong hardware, i mean the switch lite is just only a handheld and can play such games. that gives me hope they port games like final fantasy XIII ( lightning returns were nice). they port ffX /X two and ffXII i think there is a chance they port ( even if its just ffXII ) for beginning that were so good. i love my switch like no other console before. i like that u can upgrade it. and i prefer the switch ( not the lite ) b'cause one good thing is if you accidently ruin a joystick. its simple to buy a new one and not an entire switch. in my opinion the switch is one of the best console nintendo bring out. its really a revolution. i had this happyness that i had one like in n64 times. i can't play very much at home ( because of the time) but sometimes had to wait hours somewhere in the city so i often think ok just take the switch in the backpack. and my fear that a joystick could damaged is away b'cause you can just buy a new controller, i had anyway one for taking with me and a second. no really the design is very good and there coming lot more upgrades like a battery for charging etc. switch is upgrade able. i think this time nintendo did a really good work, i like my switch so much.
little anecdote here: i got AC4 when it was free from ubisoft last year and i played it on an older workstation laptop with a quadro card and it played at 30fps in 720p medium.. this looks pretty similar so im tempted to buy it for $40 just for the rest of the experience
The one thing you do lose gameplay wise is two running speeds. Other ports, you could half pull the trigger to run slower. Or full pull to run at full speed. It's a very small thing that most people won't notice. Price is a bit much. For me, now it cost $89.99. If you buy both games on any console with the freedom cry dlc, it would cost around $50-$65
I am genuinely intrigued with this title. I used to be "that guy" that needed to changed the x/y axis. For some strange reason whenever i played Mass Effect 3 on Wii U i could not play inverted and have been playing "normal" ever since.
I was worried that it would look ugly on the switch, due the switches graphical power. Man, I was wrong. Assassins Creed - The Rebel collection looks fantastic! I'm really excited too, as Edward Kenways adventures are my favorite in the series, next to Assassins Creed 3.
@@lay10vids well, of course it's going to look dated. It's an older game. It still looks fantastic in handheld mode. Edit- I'm going to have to disagree on AC3 looking better. They "updated" the textures when there was no reason to. The game was fine the way it was.

Man I've been meaning to pick blag flag up again. I bought it on ps4 launch and never finished it and ended up selling it. I just happened to be browsing the switch online sales today and saw this. I didn't even know it existed! Downloaded it straight away and loving it. I only play the switch in handheld mode, but sweet Jesus it looks fantastic on the switch screen.
Oh shit...How did I miss this coming out?!! Keep porting the Assassin's Creed games to Switch at this quality and I will happily play through them all again!
Black Flag ran fine for me, but I saw a lot of glitches in Rogue that soured my experience with it. In rogue, ships ur fighting will randomly sink without giving u any rewards and there were many times where I would kill an enemy and another very far away would suddenly know to investigate

Why are pirates called pirates? Cuz they ARRR!! the second I learnt of ac3 on switch I dreamt of the day I could take Edward back out in the jackdaw on the go and then as if by magic just in time for my birthday it's released and physically as well! Looks to play so nicely too I can't wait!
You can lower the brightness and it solve it. Get the game i had my doubts so i dint buy at launch and waited for fps test now i got it it runs great very great actually almost flawless 30fps and it looks sharp and no bluriness on hanheld mode.
Bought the game because of this video. Already played on PS4, but it's amazing on Switch! The pop-in is a bit jarring every time it happens. And weirdly, the minimap suffers from very low frame rate even while the main visuals are at 30FPS. Honestly, though. It runs really well and I love playing it on the bus or on my lunch break. Well worth the money

I turned the motion controls off immediately. They are not good. Gyroscopic controls can be so finicky, but whenever I tried to just brace and aim in a specific direction, it felt like he was just drifting up every time and I couldn't aim right. You can fine-tune it, but it's just not worth it. God do I hate motion controls *so much.* The port is great, though. I picked it up since it was $20 and I needed something to do while my other games were being delivered. Made a little progress, found the performance to be pretty much excellent with only a few minor graphical hiccups (mainly just a distance thing, some pop-in that's acceptable and when atop a perch you can see the square box extending outwards from your view, deciding where things stop spawning in and it looks weird). I'd easily recommend this for docked or handheld. It's a good price for the full AC:IV collection on handheld and it seems to go on sale often enough.
I don't think dude meant anything against Japan or anything....I hope. I think he just meant that there are a lot of jrps and weird indie stuff, and a lack of 'AAA' third-party titles. He's not wrong. I'm glad that the Switch is a powerhouse for people who like things like that, but I'm all about the big budget stuff from a generation or two back, and we could always use more.

I’m trying to do more handheld than docked so an opinion of how this handles is awesome. I will be going back to pick this combo game. Great review. Keep at it.
Currently on sale for US eshop only $20. I want to get a physical copy so I at least have Black Flag in the event the eshop goes down some day. The larger my digital library has gotten over the last few years the more I'm leaning into physical releases especially if they aren't that much more or are in some cases cheaper than the eShop. Looks like a great game and a good starting point for the series. I've never played an Assassin's Creed game but I think this will be my first with Black Flag.

Someone needs to port over the the recent Deus Ex games!!! Just to add to the great ported RPGs the switch has going for it at the moment. Same with Fallout 3 and NV, never been more keen for a game then I am for The Outer Worlds, and the Outer Wilds would be an insane game to port over too.
My biggest issue with the game is not allowing me to upgrade to a different class of ship. I'd love to sail around as a terror in a man o' war

This review made my mind up. Thanks for going into so much details. I’d only played as Ezio in Brotherhood on the Mac. I did really enjoy the story telling and difficulty progression of the game. Looking forward to playing this on the switch.

wow😍 remember when i play black flag. its somehow a really good assassins creed. the first you can dive. but what i like the most too is it shows that the switch is a really strong hardware, i mean the switch lite is just only a handheld and can play such games. that gives me hope they port games like final fantasy XIII ( lightning returns were nice). they port ffX /X two and ffXII i think there is a chance they port ( even if its just ffXII ) for beginning that were so good. i love my switch like no other console before. i like that u can upgrade it. and i prefer the switch ( not the lite ) b'cause one good thing is if you accidently ruin a joystick. its simple to buy a new one and not an entire switch. in my opinion the switch is one of the best console nintendo bring out. its really a revolution. i had this happyness that i had one like in n64 times. i can't play very much at home ( because of the time) but sometimes had to wait hours somewhere in the city so i often think ok just take the switch in the backpack. and my fear that a joystick could damaged is away b'cause you can just buy a new controller, i had anyway one for taking with me and a second. no really the design is very good and there coming lot more upgrades like a battery for charging etc. switch is upgrade able. i think this time nintendo did a really good work, i like my switch so much.

little anecdote here: i got AC4 when it was free from ubisoft last year and i played it on an older workstation laptop with a quadro card and it played at 30fps in 720p medium.. this looks pretty similar so im tempted to buy it for $40 just for the rest of the experience

The one thing you do lose gameplay wise is two running speeds. Other ports, you could half pull the trigger to run slower. Or full pull to run at full speed. It's a very small thing that most people won't notice.
Price is a bit much. For me, now it cost $89.99. If you buy both games on any console with the freedom cry dlc, it would cost around $50-$65

I am genuinely intrigued with this title. I used to be "that guy" that needed to changed the x/y axis. For some strange reason whenever i played Mass Effect 3 on Wii U i could not play inverted and have been playing "normal" ever since.

Assassins Creed - The Rebel collection looks fantastic! I'm really excited too, as Edward Kenways adventures are my favorite in the series, next to Assassins Creed 3.
Ardan Starmoon the game still looks really dated. AC3 looked better imo minus the faces and water animations.

Edit- I'm going to have to disagree on AC3 looking better. They "updated" the textures when there was no reason to. The game was fine the way it was.

Man I've been meaning to pick blag flag up again. I bought it on ps4 launch and never finished it and ended up selling it. I just happened to be browsing the switch online sales today and saw this. I didn't even know it existed! Downloaded it straight away and loving it. I only play the switch in handheld mode, but sweet Jesus it looks fantastic on the switch screen.

Black Flag ran fine for me, but I saw a lot of glitches in Rogue that soured my experience with it. In rogue, ships ur fighting will randomly sink without giving u any rewards and there were many times where I would kill an enemy and another very far away would suddenly know to investigate

the second I learnt of ac3 on switch I dreamt of the day I could take Edward back out in the jackdaw on the go and then as if by magic just in time for my birthday it's released and physically as well! Looks to play so nicely too I can't wait!

I haven't played this game since the launch of the PS4 and didn't know how much I missed it until now, I'm definitely picking this up on the Switch.
Before I order this, can you please pop into the settings and tell me if you can turn off that horrid white glow on everyone?
You can lower the brightness and it solve it. Get the game i had my doubts so i dint buy at launch and waited for fps test now i got it it runs great very great actually almost flawless 30fps and it looks sharp and no bluriness on hanheld mode.
I love games like this on the Switch. Picked up my copy today. Now if we could only get the Dead Space trilogy on here...

The pop-in is a bit jarring every time it happens. And weirdly, the minimap suffers from very low frame rate even while the main visuals are at 30FPS.
Honestly, though. It runs really well and I love playing it on the bus or on my lunch break. Well worth the money

I turned the motion controls off immediately. They are not good. Gyroscopic controls can be so finicky, but whenever I tried to just brace and aim in a specific direction, it felt like he was just drifting up every time and I couldn't aim right. You can fine-tune it, but it's just not worth it. God do I hate motion controls *so much.*
The port is great, though. I picked it up since it was $20 and I needed something to do while my other games were being delivered. Made a little progress, found the performance to be pretty much excellent with only a few minor graphical hiccups (mainly just a distance thing, some pop-in that's acceptable and when atop a perch you can see the square box extending outwards from your view, deciding where things stop spawning in and it looks weird). I'd easily recommend this for docked or handheld. It's a good price for the full AC:IV collection on handheld and it seems to go on sale often enough.
I want more games like this on Switch.

I don't think dude meant anything against Japan or anything....I hope. I think he just meant that there are a lot of jrps and weird indie stuff, and a lack of 'AAA' third-party titles. He's not wrong. I'm glad that the Switch is a powerhouse for people who like things like that, but I'm all about the big budget stuff from a generation or two back, and we could always use more.
If you havent yet, you should pick up Botw, Doom, and Skyrim.
