- In our latest edition of Pedal Tricks, we're going where few pedal videos have gone before: the world of the baritone sax. Sax-noise guru Jonah Parzen-Johnson walks us through his setup which takes a mic'd signal from his sax and runs it through a Dave Smith Instruments Mopho synth, a Moog Moogerfooger Freq Box and a few other pedals. The result is a set of swelling, rhythmic soundscapes that further the reputation of the sax as one of the most versatile horns in the world.

That pedal board is so clean. It's satisfying too look at because everything fits so perfectly.
So cool. I love seeing orchestral instruments combined with effects. It's something I've been wanting to do with my trombone for a while.
Great video guys, thanks for sharing!
"Can be used to amplify the best part of the saxophone"
*Psychologically damaging and spine chilling sounds intensify*
Those last three are insane!
Oh man the future is finally here.
Finally Bari Sax love!!!
This dudes circular breathing is tremendous
I need to learn how to do this. It makes him look like he’s playing a bagpipe
2:28-3:00 that's some blad runner stuff right there
Man that’s sick, I love it 😮
Love that tremelo thing at 3:15
Wow! I can hardly believe that I had never heard of doing any of this! (I'm so old.) ;)
This guy really has a Mopho and a Moogerfooger on one pedal board😂
Good Job some wild sounds
"Saxathesizer"?????!!!!!!!!! There I said it!!!!!!! Very cool stuff, and I really wish we could have heard it within the context of a song. Thanks for sharing with us.
Hey demofactory, here's a video of me playing a track with this setup. Hope you enjoy! th-cam.com/video/FNZEYSyS-gs/w-d-xo.html
Very cool. Hearing some King Crimson going on here.
This is amazing, thank you!
the intro music always reminds me of Tim and Eric awesome show. that cheesy music lol. I know that's what they were going for
and commenting after viewing this video, this guy is a genius. cool sounds!
holy sh*t this sound cool! like the whole Michael Nyman band in one person :-D
Reminds me of a Dutch band called MNHM where one of the guys plays a baritone sax through distortion pedals. Sounds like a foghorn from hell.
Please whats that song called? I want to hear it so bad!

i really want a sax pickup so i can do super heavy effects like this, sounds so cool
Really nice
Thanks for the video -- do you have a spreadsheet that lays out your set up and what each device does for you, etc? I want to start experimenting with electronics on my bari but I've always been purely acoustic player & not all that privy on buying amps and pedals etc. It doesn't look like rocket science to set it up but not easy either. I think some kind of diagram with details on what to buy first and how they work together, descriptions of effects, would be a great aid.
Hey Jeffrey, I think the most important thing is to take your time, and make sure you really understand all the ways you can use a piece of gear before you add it to your setup. First place to start is with a microphone and a preamp that allows you to get your instrument to a signal level that's right for going through guitar pedals. If you're using a clip-on mic (condenser), it probably needs a source of phantom power, if its a dynamic mic, you can be more flexible about how you plug it into pedals. After that, a delay pedal is a great place to begin. You can do a ton of cool stuff with just delay. Feel free to shoot me a message if you want to talk about more!
Sweet, thanks. I'll send you message. You're great at operating this stuff. Also, nice circular breathing!
My pedalboard centers around my Boss Harmonizer. I also play electric violin, flute, and harmonicas through my effects, as well as saxes and keyboard. I start with an Allen & Heath 6 channel mini mixer. My Mic is a Myers Pickups Feather Mic.
Great video, pedals with other instruments please. Vocals would be good as would percussion.
Great video! Can you repeat the connection and use of the OneControl and Line Selector?
can you use this setup in a live scenario like at a show? do you use a gate? sounds great!
I've used it in lots of shows! I don't use a gate, but I do use the pedal at the front of my chain as an effects loop to control when signal is sent to the effects.
beautiful! I would like to ask so many questions! I do not want to abuse your generosity, but would you know if that valve amplifier would serve for a alto saxophone? I also wanted to ask what power supply do you use? thank you!
I think the amp would work for alto also. It has a pretty musical EQ. I now use a cioks power supply with pedals and I think it works very well.
I wanna see Shabaka Hutchings use some of these pedals
So you need at amplify the signal going out the mic into the pedals, but then do you need to lower the level going out of the pedals into a mixer?
wouldn't it be a hell of a lot easier just to play bagpipes?
Jeff K absolutely not. Those things are the devil to play.
Hahaha !
What are you crazy... you need a truck to carry all that around. I'm old school, saxophone and a gig. LOL
When I saw the title I was like: WUT THE DUCK?
Hey Jonah. Thanks for the great video. I wonder how i can integrate the Mopho in my effects-loop im using for my tenor. what kind of signal can i give the Mopho? And how do you turn on and of the effect, as it doesn't have a bypass-switch? in the video it seems like your using the boss line-switcher ist that right? would be great to get some tips from you, the sound the Mopho is creating is impressing :-) Cheers!
I use the line selector in this video for bypass, just as you say. Using an effects loop to turn it on and off is probably the best way to do it. There is also a "push it" button which you can configure as a latching VCA on off option for effects, but then you loose the clean through, so you'd still want an effects loop or a mixer.
Does anyone know if Electroharmonix pedal would go well with a tenor sax? Im getting into the whole pedals for my tenor but not sure if this would be the right kind of pedal to create edm style sounds mixed with a tenor.
Eddie Harris meets Sun Ra! I like it!
cool
Quick question: if you play through your pedal board without have any pedals activated, do you get the same tone as is you would play directly in a PA? Basically do you lose tone going through this even if this is all true bypass? Thanks :)
Yanick, because I use an effects loop, when the loop is bypassed, the signal just goes from the preamp, directly to the amp or PA, so I don't lose much tone, if any, its a pretty clean and direct signal chain. Since this video, I've upgraded to an eventide mixing link as the preamp + effects loop, so that makes the signal even more direct.
Jonah Parzen-Johnson Thanks!
@@jonahpj Thanks!
Wow...
Cool stuff. Any problem with feedback? I played briefly in a band where I ran my Bari through a multi fx pedal and was always fighting feedback. Even when I put the amp on the other side of the room. Any suggestions? Thanks!
+rustOfunk Feedback is definitely something I have to worry about. There are a few ways I try to keep it from being a problem: Since the saxophone rests on my right side, I always keep the amp on my left side. I use an external preamp to get the mic to line level, which gets it strong enough that I can keep the preamp on the amp itself below 12 o'clock. If its still feeding back I usually just roll off some highs, and that cuts down on a lot of the feedback. Also, using a clip on mic is very helpful because I can always keep my horn in a consistent location relative to the mic.
+Jonah Parzen-Johnson Thanks for the reply. Lots of good info in there. I moved the amp all over the place and it never totally killed the feedback. Wondered about the input level, but never made it past that stage other than asking a couple of people who basically shrugged. I'm sure I'll have more questions, ha.
Checked out your channel. Cool stuff. Hipnotic.
Rusto
+Jonah Parzen-Johnson Have you ever tried using a noise gate?
***** In my case, any feedback that I might get is coming from the clean side of my signal, and I try to keep that side as transparent as possible. Most of the time just moving the amp back or over is all it takes. Its worth considering if you're dealing with a lot of feedback though!
Is that expression pedal bank pedal available anywhere he uses available anywhere? I'm really surprised I've never seen that before.
Hey +Drew Smith (SunBlowsUp), that one is a custom pedal. I ordered it from FXdoctor: www.fxdoctor.com/
+Jonah Parzen-Johnson oh awesome, thank you Jonah! Fantastic video by the way. This was a great introduction to your work and I'll definitely be looking out for more of your stuff in the future :)
Awesome, thanks Drew Smith!!!

Jonah Parzen-Johnson Awesome dude, definitely gonna check it out!
hey, awesome stuff! is that a guitar or bass guitar cabinet on the tubemaister 18? if is a guitar, doesnt the bari sax frequencies damage the speakers? thanks
Hey Pedro
The bari sax's lowest note is actually only a minor third lower than the low E on guitar so the bari sax range is not really a problem. I actually have more trouble with low-end roll off on some of the synth passages. For this reason, when possible, I use a DI in addition to the amp. My Tubemeister has a DI out so I can get the amp sound, but still get some help from the PA, if I want to hold on to the tube sound.
Pedro Arelo guitar cabs can handle very low frequencies. I've seen people using guitar cabs for bass.
@@jonahpj you mean on bass a Alto Saxes low C# is low as a low E on guitar and it hits lower notes Bari Sax is closer to a Bass Guitar so to be honest a Bari sax if transposed to c it's a octave below a guitar
Wow I really wish I understood a single word of all that.
5:22 is siick
Jonah! MSM represent lol
Kind of cool
I think 3:31 sounds like a violin
I imagined this but I imagined it was an actual piece of music

I figured out how to use a super ego with a patch to basically do away with all that pesky circular breathing
This is the fucking nuts
What type of Bari is that
Its a Couf Superba II bari. I have a list of gear here, if you're interested: jonahpj.com/about/gear
IF I WANTED TO BUY GUITAR PEDALS. I D PLAY GUITAR. YOU PEOPLE ARE CHOCOLATED MOOKS.
Do guitar players hear the explanation of the setup and just get it? All of that complicated mess went straight over my head.
Mopho... Moger foger... lol...
What preamp is he using?
+Siddhu Anandalingam I use a rolls MP13 mini-mic preamp. It has phantom power, a line level output, its small, its rugged, and its relatively transparent. This is it: www.rolls.com/product.php?pid=MP13.
+Jonah Paren-Johnson Awesome! Thanks for this info; I also play Bari and have a pedal setup, but I usually use a dynamic mic with a line matching transformer!
Mofo? Ha, your original sound should be heard above the swirl of effects. Play well, and be on time. Best of sound. I dig it!
That shit ain't cheap son
Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper just to use a keyboard instead of circular breathing on a bari sax? And I was expecting some more typical bari sax licks with effects, not just long tones.
Sounds like VdGG
Oh. Is that all?
$10000 later
When Derek Brown can make all these sounds through skill alone
It all sounds like trash lol. This would have no practical application with any group that I could think of that would have any mild level of success.
Unnecessary
куча примочек а толку хер
What a waste of cash 😱😱😱👎
No just no does not even sound like a sax at this point
