    Hey John a few questions if you don't mind me asking? 1) What oil/wax sealer do you use/recommend? 2) can you buy steel bow ties like you used? or did you make them?
    The reason I ask about the oil is I'm in the throws of making my 1st live edge slab kitchen bench/breakfast bar and want to make sure I seal it right. I don't like the stodgy look of some varnish as it looks thick and plastic some times. I've seen where the varnish is thinned with turps maybe that would be a better option for me. Any recommendation? would be grateful... Cheers

    John,
    Maybe it's just me and my small tablet, but when you flip the slab and secure it, at 1:35 into the video, I think I see the end of the slab up off the bench and it pulls down when you drive the screw into the dog. Maybe there was dust under the slab, but it appears that the first side is still not completely flat and on the bench. You notice it?

    • @John_Malecki
      @John_Malecki  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its flat. Flatness is relative to the top side of the slab after it is flattened. The hold downs also flex and give the illusion the slab is moving more than it is. It is also a whole slab, so i dont need the bottom perfectly flat across. I have the center perfectly flat for reference on the top. Hope that helps tom!

      Do you have a video of how you attach metal/wood bases to a slab piece? I am interested in seeing this done to alleviate expansion and contraction without the possibility of cracking your work. If you do then I may not be looking hard enough. Maybe a little commentating about how it’s done as well....

  • @LoneOakWoodworks

    The slab jig is nice, but when screwing those rails down to a top you can't just assume the top has zero twist to it, the rails should be checked across the ends with a level.

    • @John_Malecki
      @John_Malecki  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Dan, So when flattening a slab its relative to itself. You're not necessarily "Leveling" the slab as much as you are making it parallel. So, by using a level flat surface for reference, you're able to guarantee that by mounting the flattening jig to it you are going to create a flat reference surface in order to make it parallel. But yes, you can also use a level to ensure its level!

    • @LoneOakWoodworks
      @LoneOakWoodworks 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@John_Malecki John, you are making an assumption that the bench or other surface being used is itself perfectly flat. If the surface has a corner that's a bit low due to variations in the build, floor, etc.. then the rails will have a twist relative to each other that will be duplicated in the slab. It doesn't matter if they both trend up or down from end to end or side to side as long as they are truly parallel to each other (no twist). Of course the wider the slab, the more important it becomes to check. Also depending on what's being built, a bit of twist may or may not be troublesome, but if you want it truly flat the rails should be checked across the ends. Fixing a twist isn't easy if they are bolted to something solidly built like an outfeed table as shimming under a rail just causes the slab to be thicker there, ideally you need to adjust a corner of the surface up or down so where the slab lies and the rails move together. I know that's getting a little picky and in most cases it will be fine, but my comment was also intended for those watching the video who might want to try it themselves. The table you used may by chance have been perfectly flat or close enough, but the next guy slapping rails onto some surface to flatten a slab may have all kinds of trouble if the rails have a twist to them.. :)

      You are correct. I shouldnt have assumed people typically flatten and their work surfaces. In the future i'll make sure to be more clear on that part. thanks for the comment!
