Great video but want to add a correction to the description update here: the constant power cable is not an appropriate alternative to the parking mode cable (according to Garmin docs, constant power cable is not compatible with parking mode). Constant power cable will drain your battery as it keeps the camera fully powered. Parking mode cable uses constant power only for motion detection until activated and has features to avoid fully draining your battery.
Thanks for the info! Very good to know and something I was not aware of since I haven’t tested that product or looked into it’s compatibility vs the parking mode kit deep enough.
Thank you that’s much appreciated. Was my first time doing something like this and I thought it would be good to share the process from an absolute beginner perspective.
Apparently not, The parking mode cable prevents the Dash Cam from draining the vehicle's battery to a problematic level. Long before the vehicle's battery level becomes too low to start the vehicle, the Dash Cam will power off automatically and will not consume power any further. Official from Garmin.
when you hardwired to the standard install for this unit does the unit loose power if your vehicle has ECO mode stop start when you at the traffic lights ?I heard that the battery does not last long enough to retain operation when this vehicle feature kicks in. loved to get your advise ..thanks
If you use the parking mode kit for a hardwire install then it should not be an issue, as the camera should retain constant power direct from the battery at all times. Using a normal 12v accessory port, however may cause issues if the power to the accessory cuts off when start-stop is activated. From my observation battery units like the Garmin 46/56/66W shut down in about 15 seconds when removed from constant power, whereas the Tandem and Mini have capacitors instead of batteries and shut down in less time. My advice is check what happens to the 12v accessory port when stop-start kicks in, I would test this by plugging a phone in to charge and then see if it stops charging when the engine stops. If it remains active during stop/start then you can use whatever means you prefer to wire it in. However, I recommend always using the official parking mode kit where possible as it provides more options. I hope this helps.
for ACC which slot to be used.. For BATT, which slot to be used.. I have same circuit diagram.. Please advice.. I have sets of fuse taps, both standard and Mini and fuses of 3 amp and 2 amp.. Also Garmin mini 2 and constant power cable.. Slot 42 - Cigar - ACC Slot 45 - Radio - Batt Or Slot 12 - Mirror Adjustment - ACC Slot 21 - Interior lighting - BATT
Where did you put the little power brick? Figuring out where to put it was by far the most time consuming part of my install, and I'm still not totally happy with it.
Congrats and thanks for the video. I have a Garmim Dash Cam 45 and I just had my car damaged in the parking lot and I have no way of knowing who caused the damage. Certainly, if I were to pay to have this service done in a specialized workshop, they would make the connections using the wiring of some accessory in the car, such as a headlight switch, for example, stripping this wiring. Unfortunately, this is the culture here.
UPDATE… GARMIN have recently released Constant Power Cable that will make installation even easier. The Constant Power Cable plugs into your vehicle’s OBD-II port for constant power and is the replacement for the Parking Mode Kit. I’ll get one to test soon…
@@theexpatgunner I was thinking about the Constant Power OBD Cable too but will it make the Garmin cam be in actual parking mode? That's where the confusion lies. There's a difference between parking mode versus constant power (i.e., when your engine is on). In parking mode, the cam is actually not recording but will record if trigger by motion or incident. If I just need to turn the cam on while the engine is off, I can use a battery bank and it will power up the cam. However, it does not trigger the parking mode when I do this. Hope that make sense. Garmin website does not explain this. By the way, I have the GarminTandem.
@@genxiong2695 as far as I understand the constant power kit was designed as a replacement for the parking mode kit. It should function the same, but I do not have one to test. I think Garmin have a published document explaining its functionality.
Not yet I’m still only using the parking mode cable for the front. However I am considering adding the parking mode cable for the rear Garmin Mini camera
I have a cobra dash cam but hardwire it only has two red and black wires. It is from the same brand”cobra” special for my camera. Where should I connect those two cables? Thanks.
The Garmin parking mode kit and Garmin branded accessories will only work with Garmin Dash cameras. Typically a red wire indicates positive and a black wire negative. I can only recommend you consult Cobra documentation for the correct procedure on hardwiring your dash cam.
If we are taking about the Garmin Tandem then yes both the front and interior cameras are live with the parking mode kit. For additional cameras they each require separate parking mode kits.
So for my 2020 Nissan Altima, that means it would be best to take it to a professional place to install the parking mode accessories? I saw the video twice but still can’t figure out how to do it. My husband doesn’t know anything about electricity either 🥺
My advice with anything like this is, if you feel confident and understand the basics of electrical systems then it’s good to try. If you can’t then get a professional for safety and peace of mind.
So I've installed my garmin tandem the same way you set up your camera, but the parking mode feature is not working. I pulled the fuse from the constant power supply fuse slot (horn relay) and verified a constant 12V when the car was turned off. The camera works just fine when the car is on, but nothing when the car is off. Any suggestions?
One question comes to mind. Have you accessed the parking mode settings from within Garmin app? By default the parking mode is disabled and must be enabled using the smartphone app.
@@theexpatgunner I just figured it out last night... Sad to say that the issue was mixing the cables after I had swapped fuses, at some point I had swapped the red/yellow by accident and had the yellow cable connected to accessory and red to constant 12V. I rewired the cables to the appropriate fuses and it worked immediately.
Hello how do i get this to work with my dual battery? But i cant get access because of parking mode being on. How do i get this to work so i dont have to use the parking mode being controlled with the ignition as im using my dual battery...?
Parking mode is the only option available with Garmin Tandem, X6 series, mini 1 and earlier. I believe if you want to using parking guard then you need a Garmin X7 series or mini 2 camera, the tandem and earlier do no support parking guard. If your having issues with dual battery then maybe you need the Constant Power Cable which connect to the OBD-II port, instead of the hardwired parking mode kit.
@@theexpatgunner I have the Garmin 67w with the parking mode cable and it’s running off the dual battery and for the acc wire I have that ran to the interior fuse box using a fuse tap. Great video - questions - I have dash cam tandem w/parking mode cable (front) now I want to connect the dash cam mini 2 (rear) do I need a longer cable to attach to the tandem? do I need separate parking mode cable for the rear mini 2? thanks for your help
Hi Brian. If you want to run the mini 2 in parking mode you will need an additional parking mode cable. The parking mode cable has only one usb output, therefore its not possible to connect more than one camera. As an alternative I suggest looking at the Constant Power Cable, as a replacement for the parking mode kit, as this option looks to support 2 dash cameras at a time.
Both the parking mode cable and the new constant power cable are confirmed to work with the Garmin Tandem. It’s clearly listed under the compatible devices section on Garmin’s official website. Not sure where you are getting your information from
hi. do I need to buy some adapters to connect parking mode cable to car? i have seen that the cable are free (ACC e BATT).. (kenwood parking mode kit has some adapters.. ) thank you
For the Garmin kit I had to purchase double fuse adapters separately so that I could connect to the fuse box. I cannot comment on the Kenwood kit, but if it comes with some then that’s great.
@@theexpatgunner thank you! can u tell me what kinf of adapters i have to buy? i'm going to buy 2 cameras. (front + rear) and I have to buy 2 parking kit.. can i connect them using only 1 adapter? thank you.
I’d get a set of car fuse piggyback adapters, and I’d suggest running a set for each parking mode kit. Size depends on your vehicle model and availability of live and accessory positions.
So, what exactly is the difference between Parking Mode and normal Recording Mode when you're driving? Is it still constantly recording when the Ignition is off? Or does it only record when it detects movement? If so, isn't that too late? Or does it have some kind of buffer and keeps the last 5 seconds in memory for example and then writes that too the Card when triggered?
Mikey, the parking mode allows the unit to operate each time the ignition switch is turned on. And, it operates automatically when the vehicle is switched off. It has a feature that will automatically shut the camera off short of running down the vehicle battery. Hope this helps.
@@almccallie4314 - But, is it constantly recording when the Ignition is off? I ask because my car is garaged overnight and only really need this feature when it's in a Car Park. I suppose I could just unplug it
@@PhannyObsession Parking mode is achieved by using a special wire from Garmin called a “Parking Mode Cable”. They are a bit expensive. And yes, parking mode begins to record when the ignition switch is turned OFF. It is my understanding there is also a feature that senses motion, (such as something bumping your car), that tells the dash cam to save or protect that portion of the video. I’m with you - I don’t like it recording while just sitting in my garage, so I’m putting a switch on the wire so I can disable it when I want to. Keep in mind, the Parking Mode Cable doesn’t plug in to anything for a source of power. It is hardwired in to two power wires - one for a switched accessory, and one for constant power. Mine is wired using two fuse taps straight into the fuse block. I hope this helps. Good luck with it.
Is it possible to make it so that the dashcam only turns on with the car using the kit? Can't use cigarette lighter port cus it keeps it on all the time
With the official parking mode kit yes it’s technically possible. The kit is designed to keep the camera in standby mode so it records only when an impact or motion is detected, or both. However you can disable this mode altogether in the Garmin Drive app settings so that the camera only comes on when the car is started. Hope this helps.
Hi, weird question here but would it be possible for you to take some pictures of the garmin 66w in different angles? I have to do a Leaving Cert project on dash cams and i cannot find all of the pictures I need to sketch the dashcam. I contacted Garmin but they couldn’t help me
Cam reads which wires have incoming voltage, if it see voltage from an always hot wire and one that is only powered when cars is set to ignition on, it will think the car is started. if it is only getting voltage from a always hot line and not a line that is only powered when car is on that it will go into parking mode. cam reads voltage coming from line to see what charge battery is at and if voltage drops too low cam shuts off entirely.
How do I hardware this up so the camera only turns on when the car is running? I don't wish to use parking mode, but want to hardware it so I take up my charging port. What fuses should I connect the ACC and battery cable to then?
