So, if you’re like me, and have purchased this device or the Tascam Model 12 or Tascam Model 24 without out any recording experience, then this video is for you.
The Tascam user manual just falls way short for anyone who isn’t experienced with this type of equipment. So I made this video to share some of the recording tricks I’ve learned from trial and error and from great guidance from more experienced recording artists.
If you couldn’t see exactly what I was doing while sweeping the pan adjustments on the lead guitar during the mix down, I started from the stereo settings ( left /) (right \) and “swept” the right knob full left then “swept” both knobs full right, then returned the left knob back to its full left position again.
It’s a cool effect, hope this helps.
Thanks for watching!
Finished song begins @23:45
I've had a chance to start getting my head around my new Tascam 16 now. I have ironed out many of my initial difficulties. On board FX working fine and sound quality sublime. Thanks EJ Guitars for getting me started.
THANK YOU!!!! Panning was one of my main concerns on choosing a multi track recorder, and you just made up my mind!!! This was exactly what I was looking for, not only to see how it worked to record, but to PAN during mixdown. Its like you made this video for me!!! Thank you for putting this together and posting. More helpful than you know!!! New subscriber
Sounds amazing! Thank you! Over the last 3 years I have written over a thousand songs on Tascams DP33l2, Model 24 and 12. Mainly the 24 and 12 now. I still have so much to learn!! I never tried SD play, super useful thank you!❤✌🌟 love your guitar!
Hi EJ i believe you should not have the PFL pushed in when you mix down or you will get the leverlof the channel BEFORE the fader and get a false reading on the main meter. You want to see the mix level of the Mix After the fader NOT before to make sure when your mixing with the faders your not clipping because you faders are to high.
You’re actually right. I’m just so use to monitoring the levels of individual tracks that I tend to keep those on without thinking. Thanks dude!
HI THERE EJ. ! I HAVE JUST BOUGHT A MODEL 16 AFTER MANY LET DOWNS AND INTERRUPTIONS ON COMPUTER DAW'S WITH THE SOFTWARE CRASHING AND SOME LATENCY ISSUES AND SO GLAD I MADE THE LEAP ! THIS MACHINE IS A REAL WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING E.J. ! ! ! GREAT TUTORIAL MAN - AND I LIKE THE " RAWNESS " OF HOW YOU WENT THROUGH IT FOR OUR BENEFIT.
I'M A RETIRED SOUND ENGINEER AND HAVING WORKED ON 3 x 8 TRACK ADAT MACHINES THIS IS A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH.
IT'S TAKEN ME A WHILE TO GET MY HEAD AROUND WORKING WITH IT BUT YOUR VIDEOS HAVE HELPED SPEED UP THE LEARNING PROCESS . MANY THANKS E.J. KEEP 'EM COMING DUDE ! BEST WISHES. - EDDIE - UK MUSICIAN.
Awesome!!!!
Glad you made the choice!
That was very well explained, methodical, and helpful. One of the things I liked most is that you didn't waste half of the video saying what you were going to do and going into digressions, just a straight ahead explanation.
Thanks. I have a 24 and happy to see I can mix down without going to the DAW. I will record more on the Model 24 going forward.
That’s awesome! Thanks for checking it out. Let me know how it works out for you.
Thanks very much EJ - this has been the most helpful tutorial for the Tascam stand alone I've yet seen.
Thank you! Let me know how it works out for you.
I just wanted to thank you. For your tutoring. I recently bought a Tascam 16 and recorded a song and did not know how to mix it down. Your video helped a lot. Now I can unlock the true power of this tool. P.s ignore the guy who says hire a drummer I think you sound great ! Love the videos where you go on shopping sprees to the music store. I’d like to see what you buy yourself this year for Christmas. Keep up the great videos E J ! Love your channel. 🤙🏻🎤🎸😃👌🎼
Appreciate you showing this process. I like to use a click track, not just playing it through the Bluetooth channel but actually recorded to a channel. Of course the downside is you do lose the use of the channel for recording other instruments or vocals, but if you know you’ll only be using, say 12 channels to record to, it’s not an issue. So I basically record the Bluetooth channel (while the click is playing), to an open channel using Subs 1 and 2. Works really well, especially if for any reason you want to export your tracks to a DAW. Thanks!
Great video man, when using a mic in channel 1 then I want to record another vocal track on channel 2, is there a way to assign the track without having to plug out the mic from 1 to 2, another thing how to connect tascam to smart phone or camera to get that clear audio, thanks man
Hey thanks for explaining this! It really isn't clear at all from the manual- Even people with some experience were confused!!! Great straightforward video!
Well done.
Many thanks for this , I bought this model 4 months ago and tried a couple of times unsuccessfully to figure it out . The instructions were minimal didn’t even explain what half the buttons do. or they’d explain only part of a procedure and not follow it trough . I am grateful for those who take the time to explain how to use items they buy . They should include your videos in the instructions
I really like your Model 16 videos. Got me Model 16 and also making vlogs of my experience with that beautiful console. Cheers and pls keep sharing it’s contagious:-)
Thank you so much for your videos. So far I have only used my Model 16 for live performances. But it’s time to set up a website for my band and therefore I need some recorded music. Can’t wait to start recording.
This was very clear with good detail. Thanks.
Fantastic tutorial, thankyou from across the pond! ❤
Great job you’ve cleared up a lot of anomalies particularly in the mix down phase!
Glad it helped. Love my Tascam
@@EJsGuitars Me too I have a Tascam 12 but there’s lot of similarities. Learned more from the You Tube videos such as yours the instruction manual is pretty basic!
I love the way you are so into everything about music.
Thank you EJ!!
That's how it's done!!bravo
Right on! I would love to see your setup!
You Rock RA!N! Thanks for checking it out!
I just got a model 16 and found your tutorials superbly helpful. I have previously been using a little Tascam DP 03 SD and got a Model 16 because I figured its time to get serious. I wanted the analogue mixer because I'm not happy mixing digitally on my DAW. This unit seems to answer all my needs. For me it's multi-track recording only, all instruments and vocals. I would also be interested to learn how to ping pong with this device, I believe it can be done. Great tutorial - many thanks from the UK .
I am just about to get a Model 16. Thanks for the great simple vids. De mysitying!
This is so helpful brother. I don't believe anyone else is doing the quality vids you are doing. Immensely helpful....thanks again. I have the same model 16 and it is an awesome unit. Cheers.
Hello ... I would like to thank you very much for all the registration procedure, I have the same device as you and I had a lot of problems to manage to understand everyone even by reading the instruction manual and the I see your genius video which is really very well explained on your part without it being complicated. A big thank you to you. Pierre😀🎵🎶🎼📽
Thanks! This was helpful. I like this style of tutorial.
Super helpful thank you so much!
great service you are providing, thanks !!!
Thanks... Big help getting started w/ 16
Thanks EJ, I have the Model 12, but the recording is the same and your video helped a lot!
Thanks for sharing. I learned something new today. :) Keep up the good work, and greetings from Norway.
You can also just press 'SD main mix return' to listen to your master mixed version without having to do a stereo mix export to the SD card to check
Very useful video. Thanks
Great info Thanks !!
Very informative thanks for the vid
Mi sai dire cortesemente qual'è il miglior metodo per registrare da pc dal segnale audio non da USB grazie
Some great advice here. Thanks
I'm sure a lot of effort went into making this tutorial. Nice job. Hope you had a great long weekend 👍😁
Lol! I worked two days on a twenty five minute video! I must be insane!🤣👍🏼
thank you very much.
Fantastic song and tutorial, EJ !! ♫
Thank you for the help
I have noticed that after recording I can go back to the very beginning by pressing the “Stop” button twice. Also is your drum marching has a left and right output you can use 2 cables on tracks 9/10 or 11/12 to record in stereo. That will save you some track space, I think. Awesome video. I learned so much here.
Excellent tutorials, particularly in the little details that takes trial and error to sort out. It's a great device from how you present it.
very impressive knowledge of your equipment
awesome that you share it
you are cool
Thanks Cheryl! I love making a fool of myself because as I fumble through people will undoubtedly point out my mistakes and show me the way!😊
It’s definitely a labor of love!
Thanks for always being so supportive and encouraging!
Hi! Great videos and useful guideline for new users. So.
I am new on the Model 16 and have had a lot of trouble trying to use the PAN and faders. They simply do not work!! At all!!! Same happened with a Model 24 that I had before. Surely I am doing something wrong. Can you please advise? Thanks!!!
I have had my eye on this for a while because my mixer lost a couple channels and has been crackling. I think I will pull the trigger. Looks awesome. I try to stay out of the DAW as much as possible, and I think with this thing I can get a track 99% done and just put in the DAW maybe for some final touches.
🎱👍🏻 Asked Magic 8-ball and got answers. You've absorbed a lot of info since I've started watching your chan. Cool to pay it forward.
I’m a glutton for music gear... and ice cream!🤣
Thanks for your encouragement dude, I really appreciate it.
Hi cyber doc how are you today.👋
I recorded tristar pictures today can you watch it and reply to me please?👍😃
Super informative 👌
Excellent vid, cheers
So I could record 10 tracks, dump the SD into my DAW, set up the DAW mix with effects etc and send all 10 back USB to Model 16 for an analog mixdown to 24/48 on the SD again? - If so, then it really makes us want inserts on every channel not just the first two. Informative video, I have a Model 16 on the way, understanding the architecture of this machine is a prerequisite. Is the compression analog and is it pre or post conversion?
I’m seriously struggling with the stereo mix down part . What you’re saying eg press record mix it and it appears on stereo mix then go to SD play and it’s on channel 13/14 I’ve watched this video so many times and tried it exactly but I get no sound nothing . Yes the fader for 13/14 is up . I suspect it’s one little button or simple pre step that you didn’t mention but I’ve literally tried everything and can’t get a stereo mix and the instruction booklet doesn’t explain this step . I’ve come to the end of the road of what I can do with this . Yes lovely multi track recording but can’t mix down . Any one can help ?
I am having this exact problem! Help!
When you’re doing your mixdown once you’re finished and stop the main record button, press the menu button and using the jog wheel scroll down to Stereo Mix Export, press the jog wheel and follow the prompts. Of before you started any of the process you would have needed to create a “song project” (new song) in order for any of it to work. Hope this helps.
That's some cool production tips bro and 🙀 what a beautiful Yamaha guitar 🎸
Thanks dude! That Yamaha is definitely cool!
Great video thanks! Can you start a mix down from points other than the very beginning and create an export from say the 7:00-10:00 minute marks for example?
Great video ej wish i had half your knowledge 👍👍
I wish I had your talent!
Thanks for checking it out!
Hi, thanks for this. Is it correct that the Eq's, automation etc during mixdown do not get printed onto the individual tracks, and only get recorded to the stereo main outputs/mixdown?
Can the model 16 be used as a DAW controller? Like control the faders, gain, and Pan in your DAW ?
Good video but the mix down didn' t work for me though I'm using the 24, should that make a difference?. Plus, what you're doing is really bouncing down which isn't supposed to be possible internally ie. You have to patch from the sub outs back into the mixer . . . help!
Why don't you use the meters button on LIVE and bring the signal to the line which is -12db?
is there a opportunity to delete the few seconds before the song really begins and to delete the seconds which follows after the song already ends ? Thank´s a lot for your very nice Videos , cheers, Stefan
Thanks so much for taking the time to teach! Very helpful. Quick question: Is there any way to have the mixed down version of the song shortened to not include your first 40 seconds - and to exclude the last section after the song already ended?
great how to. can the mixer record a master mix on the unit?
EJ, what is the best method to connecting a compressor to this mixer?
Oh man! What a helpful video! I picked up a tascam yesterday and have been checking out a bunch of videos, yours is fantastic, had NO IDEA what the PFL button was for haha, but now I do ;).. Question about the two panned guitar tracks for the stereo image... If you recorded one track and had it dead centre on the pan, would that not give the same sound as a panned left and right?
Subscribed, look forward to seeing more of your tascam vids!
Hey buddy, quick question for you. I've only had the model 16 for about a week. I figured out how to record and stuff. The eq and compressor are working. The only thing I can't figure out how to do is to get the panning to work. I'm wondering if it's some kind of setting that allows the panning to work. Any advice on that?
HI EJ. - THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY. ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO DUDE ! I READ IN THE TASCAM MANUAL THAT WHEN YOU SET IT TO RECORD MODE THE RECORD BUTTON IS ON PAUSE AND THE RED LIGHT BLINKS . EVERY TIME I SET MINE IT DOESN'T DO THIS - IT STARTS RECORDING RIGHT AWAY. AM I DOING SOMETHING WRONG OR IS THIS A FAULT ?
ON MY YAMAHA 16 TRACK UNIT WHEN YOU ARE READY TO RECORD YOU SET THE RECORD BUTTON TO PAUSE RECORD MODE TO GIVE YOU TIMETO PREPARE TO PLAY INSTRUMENTS WHICH I EXPECTED TO DO ON THE TASCAM. AM I MISSING SOMETHING HERE BUDDY ? BEST REAGARDS - EDDIE - UK MUSICIAN.
Hey EJ, great video thanks for posting. I have the Tascam Model 12 and wish I had purchased the 16 or 24 but wanted the Daw control and not show if by being 12 ch if I am able to control more then 12 track, also the faders are not motorized. EJ. Your videos are helping me to understand how thing work and hopefully I can get a better understanding on how I can make the model 12 work for me.
EJ keep them videos coming and again Thanks.
That’s awesome! Thanks for the encouragement, and I’m glad the videos are helpful.
I’ve considered the Model 12 but I just needed more tracks.
Thanks for checking it out!😎
EJ’s Guitars
That’s what I’m thinking I would like to have more tracks.
Really great, I want one, but I have to buy a Tascam SD-20M first for live recording....
Right on Nic! I know you’d love it, but your stuff is good already!🤘🏼
Could u use sends while in the pc mode and on which tracks, cause I know it will disable the inserts? Or will it?
Thanks so much! This is GREAT. I'm just getting started, and I have one question. My church praise team records 'live", but we also record a second (or third) set of tracks over our initial recording. How do I get the initial recording to play through our monitors while we're recording the second (or third) set of tracks? Thanks again!
Thanks for these really helpful videos EJ. Is there away when multitracking to the sd card to have the eq settings recorded for each track. So when you put in in Logic it has the eqing that you did in the model 16? Thanks
Absolutely. Once you get all your tracks recorded and adjusted, unarmed the record buttons on each track, rewind to the beginning of your song. Set each selector to MTR, then press the master record button on the far right. Once it plays through press stop then select export. After that open the SD card on your desktop and select the music file and choose the title of your recording. Drag and drop into Logic then voila, all tascam settings should be preserved and heard in your DAW.
@@EJsGuitars thanks so much. This is a big help
Thanks for your videos very informative. Just a question, my recording on a Model 12 was rejected on Bandcamp for not being a lossless file! It was a WAV file and not mp3 so I have no idea why it wasn't accepted. I had no problem with this with may old Scarlet Focusrite which was a lot cheaper! I posted in the Tascam forums but have yet to receive a reply. Thanks
thank y0u f0r the share butt g0t a tip 0n the guitar> y0u just in ab0ut in a way made 2 mono same time try some time record 2 guitar part one at a time it a come out millisecond off from each other then hard pan left and right for each take and track. it a give that stereo widening fx. this trick works great with dirty sounds with clean not so much or leads.
Hey man, nice videos! I got a question for you. If I wanted to send the output of the Tascam 16 into let's say a reel to reel, what outputs would I use? I know it doesn't have individual track outs, but what if you wanted to run a mic into it's preamp then send it out to either a reel to reel or maybe a tascam 4 track
I’ve been using the Control Room outputs for recording into my phone via iRig Duo. Works great
@@EJsGuitars hey, thanks for the reply, ok cool
Hello, I'm thinking on buying a Model 16 but have seen problems with the onboard recorder freezing and people loosing their recordings .Have you had any such problems? Thanks for the video
I haven’t had any issues like that. I love my Model 16. Thanks for checking it out!
Hello, can I record loops on this tascam ? Kinda like a guitar looper pedal.
Good onyaa man!Hey Im in Australia n picked up the 24 model.Same thing.Thought it was DAW controller.Ha.
Question. If you use it as an interface to record direct to DAW how do you send those tracks back to the M24 please?
Top stuff!These tutorials are great!
So exporting stereo file, it doesn't leave the Tascam. I been searching my computer files trying to figure out where it went, cause I cant find it anywhere.
Hey EJ's, Have you been able to get a stereo mix from your computer to your headphones? (through the model 16). MY channel 1 & 2 are set to PC and I can only get them to monitor in mono.
If you’re using tracks 1 & 2 as your playback on the Tascam turn the “PAN” knob hard left on track 1 and hard right on track 2, and you PC playback should be in stereo.
I have my song recorded but can’t seem to mix anything when playing back. What am I missing?
Put all your tracks on mtr, disarm the record buttons on the individual tracks, adjust each track where you want them then press the main record button and let them play through. Then select stereo mix export from the main menu and follow the prompts. Your mix will play on the Bluetooth track, on the model 16 it’s tracks 13 & 14. Be sure the Bluetooth tracks are on mtr as well.
Hi EJ! Have you live recorded 10 of the xlrs simultaneously and come across issues with the model 16 freezing? I updated to the 5/2021 firmware so I’m hoping it fixes that.
Great breakdown, great track, thanks! Question: Can you cut the 40 seconds in the beginning within the Tascam or must you do that in a daw?
The final mix you talk about in 16:16 does it include individual EQ adjustments?
Can u - for example- also record guitar and vocals ( in two separate tracks) directly into your computer software via MRT?
Oh absolutely! As a matter of fact I recently did that using the Tascam as my interface for my DAW (Logic Pro X).
th-cam.com/video/7qqtW7hmNuY/w-d-xo.html
But if you’re using the Tascam as an interface for your computer you’ll want the selector switch on either “Live” or “PC”. “MTR” is for if you’re only recording on the Tascam itself.
Hope that helps. Thanks for checking it out!
@@EJsGuitars Thank you soo much, man! Yeah it certainly helps, bro! Stay healthy and again thx a lot for the help! Peace from Germany
Nice work buddy - lets do a Zoom meet up sometime and let me demonstrate a few other features you may have missed that I use on my Model 24
awesome song!
I would like to have a pre-recorded backing track recorded on a track. Then I want a vocalist to be able to hear that track and sing the lead vocal. Then the vocalist wants to sing the harmony part on another track. What are the steps in getting this to happen? How do I set up the model 16 to do this?
I am just not understanding how to set an effect per channel. Say, I want to have a single channel with a reverb, but the another track with a delay?
Unfortunately that’s not possible. The effects are merely for use in a pinch. It’s expected that the user would be using external effects.
@@EJsGuitars ok that makes perfect sense. I absolutely love this board and it jump-started my creativity. I also really learned a lot from your videos. Thank you for taking the time to make these and to respond. Keep rocking!
Hey man can you loop between marks?
Great video 👍 what size memory card have you got ?
Right now I’m running a 16gb that Tascam sent as a rebate, but I’ve ran a 64gb and I believe you can run up to a 512gb card.
Thanks for checking it out.😎
Ahh Intro excellent, interesting.
Can you record all the channels directly and simultaneously to daw?
Yes
@@EJsGuitars Thank you. I would have one more question about pre/post theme. If i record to sd card or multiple channels directly to daw the eg/comp will affect the sound? As i see the fx works as send. How can i send them for recording? Thru the master channel to daw? And one more :) How is latency?
How do you present a video on audio gear and the sync is way off that it is difficult to follow your lead?
Are you listening through a Bluetooth device? I just rewatched on my phone, no latency. If you’re listening via Bluetooth device you will experience latency. The audio sync is good.
Hi , can we record a Master stereo track like a simple recorder in "Live Mode " ?
So you dont have to use a computer to record on the model 16 correct? Its a "stand alone" unit right?
thanks !
Absolutely, works great as a stand-alone recording studio
Does it incorporate a looper?
Hello, I was wondering if you had any experience recording with the spark amp through the headphone out and if so if you were having the issues ? for the most part the guitar sounds really good but it swells like it’s being over compressed even with all the compression and everything off ...any help would be appreciated ..I’m going from the output of the spark amp which is a small 3.5mm jack into a 1/4 inch input in one of the channels with an instrument input ..
Sorry I’ve never dealt with the Spark. I was seriously considering getting one but I read some reviews and decided it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. Hope you get it worked out.
@@EJsGuitars Actually EJ sir I figured it out, pretty basic fix but you have to turn the master down on the spark to about 9 o’clock and then set the trim higher on the board accordingly ,fixed it perfectly and sounds great actually. Miking my amp mostly... Thank you for the quick response and I’m surprised I haven’t subscribed already... I will now thanks for all your knowledge and help!
👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
It can be used as a Standalone unit? Then why not just have an Output for a Monitor? Seems like a no brainer. It sure would make it a more complete unit, Make Sense?
So you don't have to record the master track?
I like your idea of having a real high hat but all the drums are electronic. I think all real cymbals would be cool. I think I could get away with that better than a live kit which is simply not an option in many situations.
