  • New Edition performs Boys To Men Live
From the video "New Edition - Past and Present"
    Side Note:
While it is true Johnny didn't particularly like this song.. It is not true that he tried to screw it up... The phrase I'm going to 'F' something up can be used in a positive or negative way.. Johnny was quoted as saying. I'm going to 'F' this song up.. Lots of people pay attention to that part of what he said, and come to the conclusion that he screwed the song up.. (Negative way).. However if you read the rest of the quote.. "Whatever song you put in front of me I'm going to sing the shit out of it". It is clear that the "I'm going to 'F' this song up.. Was meant positively...

This song saved my life back in 1988. I honestly thought of giving up. And I heard this song and it was if Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis had read my mind. I also was trying to make the transition from a boy to a man. And with no father to guide me, I felt so lost. My friend loaned me the Heartbreak cassette. And I would play this song over and over and cry every time. And Johnny's performance touched my very soul!! Everytime he would say "Just hold on" I told myself that I will. And I did. Some 25 years later, I am here with a son of my own that I can help and guide through that transition.

I was at this concert many years ago. I commented many times. Now Both of my parents are gone. I'm in my middle 50's. The pain of losing them both really still help me understand this song. I loved it it my 20 but in my 50's, I'm a woman and still comprehending and changing everyday . It's Hard sometimes. I have a child and grandkids but you go back to your own parents wishing that You had their Comfort and Hugs. Means more than All the money in the world. Thing that change Girls to Women ❤. Wether we like it or not, we all have to grow up. But keep enjoying the great memories ❤😘

And to think....this was the song that Johnny hated at first because he wanted a love ballad by himself
so out of frustration in feeling that he already paid his dues singing mostly back-up on the album the way Jam & Lewis asked him to in respect for the usual N.E set up where Ralph & Ricky sings the majority of leads, he went in to the vocal booth with the true intention of in his own words "singing the fuck out of this song....somebody's gonna respect me for what I do"...the vocal that we hear on the studio version was done in one take
The result: It was never released as a single....BUT IT WAS AND STILL IS ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR SONGS ON THE ALBUM & JOHNNY HAS DONE IT ON EVERY TOUR AND BRINGS THE HOUSE DOWN
Later on, Johnny said he realized why Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis chose him to sing the song....It was to cement what JG's place was in the group which was the vocal maturity sound that N.E needed to break out of the bubblegum R&B shit that the record label was trying to keep them on while in return, N.E gave Johnny Gill the street cred and the visibility he never got with his first 2 albums during the Stacy Lattisaw era for having such a powerful voice....but it wasn't easy...Ricky Bell said it took them close to 7-8 months for them to teach Johnny how to dance LOL

    • @Keepdapocket
      @Keepdapocket ปีที่แล้ว +2

Actually, he wasn’t upset because he wanted a ballad of his own. He was upset because it WAS a ballad. He wanted a solo with bump to it. He explained he was pissed because he was tired of everyone thinking he was just a ballad singer. He wanted just one kind of song like ralph was singing. He didn’t want a slow song at all.

That's funny, however this isn't a gospel song. Johnny pop might've been a pastor. It doesn't have anything to do with N.E. as a whole or any song by them. Why you think Niggas aint singing gospel music. They might have a belief in a higher power. However, they don't try to shove pseudo riligitard illogic down peoples ear canals like y'all human viruses, frontin like y'all holier than thou, talking / typing non-sensical jibberish like: "he's blessed by the Holy spirit, anointed by the secular most high God-Damn Jesseus drinking juice with virgin Mary's ghost with the Holy Trinity.... Blah Blah Blah Blah! Um, hello, last I checked, this video says NEW EDITION, not kirk fake'n! Wake up to reality. If music still had this caliber of vocals and rhythm, much of the madness that takes place stemming from the entertainment industry would not exist as musicians would focus on creative singing and rhythm delivery rather than slinging verbal abuse at ‘themselves’ (as in the end that is who they degrade by so doing) all over the place. Yes Johnny showed he had the finesse of TP on this song and nailed it. But what is so sad is that the likes of Johnny (and a few others such as KC from Jodeci despite caving in to all the temptation/destruction of self that come with the entertainment world) have never ever been given their due credit by the very industry that encouraged many of them to bleed to death.
Finally, Thanks to everyone out there who has managed to keep the memories and emotions captured by the vocal and rhythmic powers of songs delivered to perfection such as this. That said many thanks Johnny (and also to all the others known and obscure, such as Mind-Heart and Soul, U.N.V, Real Seduction, A Few Good Men, Marvin Gaye, Harold Melvin & Bluenotes, TP, Caron Wheeler, R.Kelly, Joe, Jagged Edge, Aaliyah, Gladys Knight etc. just too many to name) for taking music to another level never to be captured again as we shall probably never witness such class of enchanting music and vocal finesse again.
May Inner Peace Be With You All

NE was not dead in the water you give Johnny to much credit NE would have still made it because of Jimmy
Jam and Terry Lewis. NE was transitioning from "Boys to men" when they did songs like Helplessly in love
and Once in a lifetime groove which had a more adult sound the album that was done before Heartbreak
was the doo-wop album that still went gold. Bobby's first album King of stage went nowhere it wasn't until
he hooked up with Babyface and Teddy Riley and borrowed from Ralph is when he became a megastar.
Who was Johnny Gill before New Edition nobody. People forget that New Edition was out when you had
megastars like Michael, Whitney, Lionel Ritchie, Prince black artists who was getting mainstream exposure
and the most exposure with main black publications. New Edition did the most with whatever minimum exposure they got and still was going gold and platinum.

I’m only 26, i have two kids whom share the same bday 5 years apart. But my life has been a wreck these past few years. Losing my dad just killed apart of me. Plenty of times i wanted to just quit. But i can’t. I’m currently homeless, living in my car in South Carolina. This week I’m flying to chicago to live there and try to get my life back on track. My brother whom i just met a few years ago is going to help me. I’m kinda scared about this next chapter of my life. Cuz everytime I’ve tried I’ve been getting knocked back down. Somebody needs to sample that flute starting at 4:30 - 4:40 into a hip hop beat. Tight

Commented over and over. Been a fan of this man since he was 12 and 13 years old- 😂😂I am the same age. He has Always had a "Grown Man's voice" trapped inside a child's body! Then he got with Stacey Lattisaw- These Two Exploded together. They reminded me of Marvin Gaye and Tammi sooo underrated- Up there with Luther. He took New Edition from Boys to Men. His voice- just spectacular!
