Thank you for the video. Most of us would prefer a more expensive fat bike, but a low-budget bike is a more responsible path to take. I definitely would advocate for more expensive bikes, but I am passionate about them and it’s what I choose to spend my money on. Many people just want a bike for occasional use and this bike can do that. I’ll be curious to see how much I can improve this bike!
Bought my first fat tire (Dolomite) 8 years ago. $125 then off of Amazon. Best hundred and a quarter I ever spent! Done many upgrades, it’s still heavy, but I love it! I’d suggest this to anyone wanting get started with a fat tire and not spend a couple of thousand bucks to find out whether you like them or not. Great video!!

I did hear recently these bikes are available from Target for around $280 as well. Check out my update video, I was able to shave about 5lbs off the bike pretty easily.

After I put one of these bikes on a diet from old leftover parts. I got it down to 36 lbs. Bars, stem, old 8 speed LX drive train, drilled 1 1/8" holes around the wheels, panaracer fat b nimble tires 4" wide, higher pull rate brake levers, carbon seat post, hollow hub axles with quick release front and back. Thank goodness I had all the stuff in house. What you will do for the wife.
I just ordered a Fat Bike for myself from Hiland yesterday. Frame is made of steel but personally, I prefer steel over the lighter aluminum due to the strength of it. I tend to ride my bikes for XC rather than mountain biking. So I do things to make them basically bullet proof for long ranges. The higher weight also helps improve my stamina and strength so I can bike further. Imagine it like purposely making it a workout lol. Only thing I don't like is how most cheaper Fat Bikes tend to have really bad rear hubs. I prefer cassettes since I have been known to overtorque freewheels to the point where they pretty much explode! If they were higher quality, I likely wouldn't have that happen but bent axles aren't fun either. The bike I purchased is a 20x4 as well. So parts are extremely limited. To do any upgrades, I will be looking into getting rims custom made for my bike for the long term. It's going to be exciting! Especially since I plan to also add a 3,000W mid drive motor to the bike for better range. The weight will help keep me upright lol.
I have the same dark blue Dolomite. Aside from the frame and fork, everything else was upgraded. Now, it's even a few pounds lighter than my ICT and I ride it around for grocery runs.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend mostly from the parts bin. I think the most weight savings came from changing the wheelset. I do have it on single speed for added fun. 😄 The handlebar looks like surly's sunrise bar so it rides nice for me.
So I purchased mine in early 2019. It has blue wheels and different brakes. I use it for bike packing on rail trails. As long as you know what it is, it’s a phenomenal bike for the money.

I haven’t had this bike in the sand, but have ridden my other fat bikes there. Much like snow, I think this bike can do some sand, as long as it is flatter terrain, and the sand is not excessively soft. I will say better tires will make a big difference.

The ALX Dolomite (aluminum) has been improved considerably over the steel version most notable (besides weight) IMHO is use of free hub. The steel models use freewheel and bend axles do to lack of support. Waiting on the upgrade videos 👍
Yep, Mongoose actually makes some much better bikes, I covered some of these in my top 5 fatbikes under $1500. I think this one as as entry level as a fat bike gets! Thanks for watching and commenting!!
I got alx the first week of March had a defective shifter shifter for the chain ring called pacific cycle in 2 days had a new micro shifter great service I've no problems with anything else even the mechanical disc brakes work great not as good as hydraulic but I don't even notice the difference I have new treks that haven't been road alot since I got this bike in March I got a Farley 7 2 weeks ago after waiting a year and a half that only about 2 pounds different the alx is faster on paved roads was gonna sell it but I like riding it in town also have a new Roscoe 7 I like it but I like the 2x8 drive train better than the 1x12 but I like all my bikes my first bike was a Walmart bike it lasted 2miles but the alx has been a great bike for the money I even put a dropper on it had more fun on it then any bike I own and it the cheapest but know that will end since I got the Farley really like the Roscoe 7 love fatbikes my ebike is a good bike but in last place for fun but handy on hot days and long trips
The ALX is a vast improvement over the original Dolomite. Ive had mine for about 8 months and have done a few changes mostly for comfort. Great bike for the price point.

Great content 👍🏼👍🏼. Just as someone else commented the Dolemite ALX , being an aluminum frame, is a much better platform for possible upgrades because of stock weight factor along with better rear hub, the frame comes in different sizes, 2x8 drivetrain, thumb shifters, and the price is $500.
Yep! I did a vid awhile back that covered those bikes along with some of the even higher end Mongoose options. This bike is definitely the very entry level for sure!

This bike is great for the price, and can be made much better for about $100-150 with cheap hydraulic brakes, a 34 tooth shimano megarange feewheel, and trigger shifter.

Yeah I have a hard time seeing this bike stock in the snow at it’s weight to tire size ratio and with these stock tires. I’ll be curious to see how close I can get it to 40lbs

Purchased a mongoose malus in 2016 for $179.00 from Kmart online before they went out of biz.at today's prices I feel I'm at a good range to do plenty of upgrades to get it to par.thought I'd share🤙🔥🔥
I had this exact bike as my intro to fat biking. After much work and doubling my initial investment it was capable off-road up to easy blue trails. But even then it left much to be desired, which is why I replaced with a Specialized Fatboy. Thankfully I bought my Dolo used so total invested was around $350, but it took stripping it down to the frame and repacking EVERY bearing, and replacing pretty much everything to get it where I had it.
I’m sure there was a lot of satisfaction and experience gained from that process! Most people can’t or won’t do that methinks. I’m sure after buying your Fatboy you realized what that premium actually got you. I won’t be going too over the top with this bike, but think it can be made noticeably better for cheap.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend I've seen multiple steely Dolos built up, and though heavy, I truly believe them to be a tank. I've seen the rims drilled for weight savings, rear hubs swapped, external BBs, AL bars/stems, new cranks, hydraulic brakes, basically everything. First best spend is lighter tires and going tubeless. The stock tires are stupid heavy, and the tubes aren't much lighter. I shaved 8lbs of rotational mass just going from stock tires to Framed Wolftrax 26x4.0 120TPIs. 203 rotors will also work with appropriate adapters, and if you have some all metal v-brake levers sitting in the pile somewhere they wake up the cable calipers until a better solution can be found. Also blow apart the bike and grease everything- early Dolos are known for being dry.

Yeah, ugh unfortunately entry level bike prices are way up. The Dolomite may be an ok way to try out fat biking... but also check out Mongoose Juneau and Argus Sport improvements, they may be worth the added cost?. Really looking forward to your upcoming "how to" episodes ...fat bikes are super fun ! can't wait to see how you upgrade this entry level bike to your minimum "performance/fun/safe" factors, hopefully at a reasonable cost!... thanks for giving this a go!

I'm 6'4" 330 and am leaning towards this bike, but I have not been able to locate one in store to sit on before buying. Anyone around my size have any experience? I'm not worried about the weight because it will be strictly be ridden on paved surfaces for 3-5 miles every day. Thanks.
Most fat bikes would be great for that, if not the ONLY option depending on the type of sand. As for what, that's a huge question based on budget and what your needs and preferences are. Tough to say, and I really can’t tell anyone to go against the manufacturer spec. But, it is a very sturdy bike, and I have seen many examples of riders well over 300lbs using these. Fortunately it’s not a bike that is designed for more aggressive forms of trail riding, so I think that helps on the durability side if the riding is more mellow.
i think of getting a mongoose argus or juneau, do you think that would be a good choice? i have never owned a fat bike before, but i don't a bad quality one either.
The Argus or Juneau are better than this Dolomite (they are aluminum I believe so lighter, and have better parts). But if your budget allows I would try something from a main brand
@@denniskozevnikoff1209 I’m not sure when your budget is, but if you can go up to about $1850 the Borealis Flume is about the best fat bike value on the market, I just got one of these myself. If that sub $1000 is your budget then it’ll pretty much be Mongoose (although you can probably find a great higher quality used fat bike right now for around $1000)

It’s not going to be very fast on the street based on the weight of the bike and limited gearing. But you can definitely put faster rolling lighter tires on to help
I just got the exact same bike. It only came with one nut for the front wheel... what the heck do i do now? I can't ride it with only one side of the wheel secured right?

Congrats on the fat bike! Honestly I haven’t done much on upgrading components, might try Reddit or google as I know people have done them. I can recommend as the first thing, get a decent set of tires, that will Make a huge difference in performance. I did a snow ride video too and that was a major help.
Both wheels are 36 spoke. They don’t appear to be double wall, but can’t confirm 100%. As for weight, I would check the Mongoose website, I am not sure what it is dated at.
I got a mongoose hitch I’m going to upgrade and make my own ebike with a kit should be a lot of fun and it’s light compared to others if rode that depends but I’m used to my heavy fat tire ebike and I ride with it off and low assist a lot with a bike trunk full off chains and unlocks plus other gear and a back pack with a kit to quick fix and get you home type thing and other various things like waters snacks stuff I buy etc and stuff my girlfriend wants that I carry for here lol. In fact that’s why I ride it when it’s dead most of the time she rides it until it’s drained and I know she’s got some issues but she needs to pitch in and I can help her get her OWN and I also need a second batters especially for the winter. Anyway so compared to that riding this is a pice of cake walk in the park eventually it gets hard mostly because of damn wind that kills it for me and riding my heavy one dead in the wind yeah I’m not complaining about the weight of these right now lol.
I just got Fat ALX $500 and planning to change pedal $25, shorter stem $10 and adding slime sealing$10 to tires. Any tips or upgrades that needed for fat bike riding during winter vs summer around park ?
I think you are on the right path. I’m not sure what tires you have but an upgrade there might be the best money you can spend, especially if you are going tubeless. You might be putting sealant in the tubes? Tires are the big upgrade on my Mongoose, will be doing that video before too long.
Well, I definitely would avoid this bike as it only comes in one size and is a medium, so would be too small. I'm not sure what your budget is, but if it is under $1000 I would first look for a used bike in a large, or maybe xtra large. If you budget is over $1000 I would look at something like the Borealis Flume, which is a great bike for $1850 base build.
@@anonymoususer-nt6lx For used bikes I would start with your local resources, especially if you have any bike shops that may have something. Facebook bike trader groups are a good place to look too. As for brands, my first fat bike was a used Surly Pugsley for $640, and I still see those around from time to time, or even the Surly Wednesday. Otherwise I would just consider anything you find under $1000 in your size and then research what it is.
I think it comes down to the (lack of) quality of the brake system as a whole. I guess better pads could help some, but I suspect it would be marginal, if at all.

@@gallonthegreat7036 tires are not cheap, but any name brand folding bead tire will be the biggest single improvement you can make to this bike, lighter weight and much better performance. You can always look local for a decent used set too, I would stay in that 26x4” size.
It can certainly do it, I would at least put some lighter tires on it. I would say, if pavement is all you do you might want to find something geared for that just because it will be faster and more efficient.

@@peteythep you can absolutely put some still large, but higher quality, lighter, and faster rolling tires on this bike. That is exactly what I did to mine, and there are even faster rolling tires out there than what I used.
@@peteythep Vee and Schwalbe have some good pavement options. Surly has some solid tires too. Pretty much anything decent will be bet than the stock tires
Yeah this bike was much cheaper a couple years back, seems like it shot up in price with shortages. I haven’t seen any of the ALX bikes on the floor in this area, but a much better option of you can find one.
That’s a true statement, but this is about the most entry level bike on the market, which was the focus of this (and subsequent) videos. Definitely get and enjoy the best bike one can afford!

@Dean Gullberry I changed the stem and bars. Now they are not as forward as the originals and more comfortable.

The brakes need some tweaking. For a bike path bike, grocery getter, or a boardwalk cruiser, it’d be fine.

Yeah, ugh unfortunately entry level bike prices are way up. The Dolomite may be an ok way to try out fat biking... but also check out Mongoose Juneau and Argus Sport improvements, they may be worth the added cost?. Really looking forward to your upcoming "how to" episodes ...fat bikes are super fun ! can't wait to see how you upgrade this entry level bike to your minimum "performance/fun/safe" factors, hopefully at a reasonable cost!... thanks for giving this a go!

I'm 6'4" 330 and am leaning towards this bike, but I have not been able to locate one in store to sit on before buying. Anyone around my size have any experience? I'm not worried about the weight because it will be strictly be ridden on paved surfaces for 3-5 miles every day. Thanks.
I have a friend that is 6' 2", and 265 lbs, rides it everyday 15-20 miles, changed brake pads, shifter, and rear sprocket 11t-34t

Online the weight capacity says 275, I believe. Do you think it could reach 330lbs? Or would that be too risky?
Tough to say, and I really can’t tell anyone to go against the manufacturer spec. But, it is a very sturdy bike, and I have seen many examples of riders well over 300lbs using these. Fortunately it’s not a bike that is designed for more aggressive forms of trail riding, so I think that helps on the durability side if the riding is more mellow.
i think of getting a mongoose argus or juneau, do you think that would be a good choice? i have never owned a fat bike before, but i don't a bad quality one either.
The Argus or Juneau are better than this Dolomite (they are aluminum I believe so lighter, and have better parts). But if your budget allows I would try something from a main brand

@@denniskozevnikoff1209 I’m not sure when your budget is, but if you can go up to about $1850 the Borealis Flume is about the best fat bike value on the market, I just got one of these myself. If that sub $1000 is your budget then it’ll pretty much be Mongoose (although you can probably find a great higher quality used fat bike right now for around $1000)

It’s not going to be very fast on the street based on the weight of the bike and limited gearing. But you can definitely put faster rolling lighter tires on to help
It's a nice bike but your probably better off with the ALX Dolomite or the Juneau for a couple hundred more.

I just got the exact same bike. It only came with one nut for the front wheel... what the heck do i do now? I can't ride it with only one side of the wheel secured right?
Yeah that sounds like an issue. It should be a fairly standard nut that you can go to the hardware store and get what you need.

Both wheels are 36 spoke. They don’t appear to be double wall, but can’t confirm 100%. As for weight, I would check the Mongoose website, I am not sure what it is dated at.
I got a mongoose hitch I’m going to upgrade and make my own ebike with a kit should be a lot of fun and it’s light compared to others if rode that depends but I’m used to my heavy fat tire ebike and I ride with it off and low assist a lot with a bike trunk full off chains and unlocks plus other gear and a back pack with a kit to quick fix and get you home type thing and other various things like waters snacks stuff I buy etc and stuff my girlfriend wants that I carry for here lol. In fact that’s why I ride it when it’s dead most of the time she rides it until it’s drained and I know she’s got some issues but she needs to pitch in and I can help her get her OWN and I also need a second batters especially for the winter. Anyway so compared to that riding this is a pice of cake walk in the park eventually it gets hard mostly because of damn wind that kills it for me and riding my heavy one dead in the wind yeah I’m not complaining about the weight of these right now lol.
I just got Fat ALX $500 and planning to change pedal $25, shorter stem $10 and adding slime sealing$10 to tires. Any tips or upgrades that needed for fat bike riding during winter vs summer around park ?
I think you are on the right path. I’m not sure what tires you have but an upgrade there might be the best money you can spend, especially if you are going tubeless. You might be putting sealant in the tubes? Tires are the big upgrade on my Mongoose, will be doing that video before too long.

What's the best entry level bike for someone 6'2 350lbs?
Well, I definitely would avoid this bike as it only comes in one size and is a medium, so would be too small. I'm not sure what your budget is, but if it is under $1000 I would first look for a used bike in a large, or maybe xtra large. If you budget is over $1000 I would look at something like the Borealis Flume, which is a great bike for $1850 base build.

@@anonymoususer-nt6lx For used bikes I would start with your local resources, especially if you have any bike shops that may have something. Facebook bike trader groups are a good place to look too. As for brands, my first fat bike was a used Surly Pugsley for $640, and I still see those around from time to time, or even the Surly Wednesday. Otherwise I would just consider anything you find under $1000 in your size and then research what it is.

I think it comes down to the (lack of) quality of the brake system as a whole. I guess better pads could help some, but I suspect it would be marginal, if at all.

@@gallonthegreat7036 tires are not cheap, but any name brand folding bead tire will be the biggest single improvement you can make to this bike, lighter weight and much better performance. You can always look local for a decent used set too, I would stay in that 26x4” size.

It can certainly do it, I would at least put some lighter tires on it. I would say, if pavement is all you do you might want to find something geared for that just because it will be faster and more efficient.

@@peteythep you can absolutely put some still large, but higher quality, lighter, and faster rolling tires on this bike. That is exactly what I did to mine, and there are even faster rolling tires out there than what I used.

Yeah this bike was much cheaper a couple years back, seems like it shot up in price with shortages. I haven’t seen any of the ALX bikes on the floor in this area, but a much better option of you can find one.
These bikes were made to be attention getters when Fat bikes were still a novelty. I'll bet most of them never hit dirt or snow.

That’s a true statement, but this is about the most entry level bike on the market, which was the focus of this (and subsequent) videos. Definitely get and enjoy the best bike one can afford!
Yeah they have not updated this steel bike for the last couple years so I don’t see it remaining long term.
